I can relate Kobold! Saskatoon isn't exactly hopping with opportunities to travel to cons and get bonus content (grumbles about having to wait for hardcover of Perfect State) . I'd rather some people have access then none though!

Good ethical discussion team! I think it's important to remember that how readers respond to instructions from authors affects trust. If Brandon wants a limited rather than a wide release of preview material, and he can't trust newsletter recipients to follow instructions, he likely won't use the newsletter to publish such previews. Glad to see everyone respecting his wishes, even if we might not agree. I'm not signed up for the newsletter. *Perks up. Why am I not subscribed to the Newletter. *trundles off to struggle with Captchha.

They are a basic "grumpy service" café, where the staff aren't obligated to treat the customers well, and people go for the experience. The thing is, in general, I felt like their service exceeded other venues. The food was great and served promptly, and even though I was nervous about being made fun of, I never felt overtly mistreated. I actually think it's a great way to empower servers not to have to put up with ridiculous customers. When I was in Vancouver last I went there for the first time, and it was sooo stressful for me. They make fun of you if you can't make up your mind, and I can NEVER make up my mind, so I stood outside and stared at the menu in the window forever, so I would know what I wanted to order when the server got to my table. I also have a dairy sensitivity, and didn't want to ask for a custom order (because they don't do those), so that was a thing as well. On a whole though, I think the entire concept, and especially the guys who run it, are HILARIOUS, and would make interesting epics, haha.

For some reason this comment made me want to brainstorm a Vancouver plotline that somehow centers on the Elbow Room Café...

I might be open to either option (more likely where I world build but don't take control, lol), but right now I have time for neither. The idea of expanding The Dalles plot into Dallesport has the added benefit of allowing some overflow epics from The Dalles, which might become overcrowded, to move into a new plot line (like what happened with Backtrack and Co. when moving from Portland to The Dalles).

I see the differences and similarities. I thought there was some sort of dream epic, but could not remember the specifics. Sleepwalker would not be able to read thoughts like Sandman, and I could remove the dream manipulation, and just leave the astral projection and the sleep-walker control. Dreamers would still see Sleepwalkers astral form, and he would be able to communicate with them, but not see their dreams. Then, while there would be similarities, they would likely be different enough, since the only overlap I see is the forced sleeping. Even still, I think these two characters will be shelved for the foreseeable future. I just had ideas and wanted to get them out. On the new city point, depending on how much time I have, I might be open to coming up with a "government" (if making up an Epic despot and their retinue counts and government) and start a storyline in another city, but I definitely wouldn't be up for it until Summer starts because I'm swamped until then. EDIT: I would also second the Dallesport idea!

So, I have a new epic idea. Not sure if I'll have time to write him in the RP, or where he could fit in, or if he even would fit in, but he came to me today, so I thought I would get him out of my head . Hopefully this concept doesn't overlap too much with any existing characters. Let me know if he does! My intention was for him to be quite powerful, but if he feels overpowered (even for an epic), I'm also open to edits. Also, apparently he comes with a side-kick, who may or may not be a mash-up of the character I was discussing before with some of the concepts we were talking about in the probability epic discussion . Anyways, Epic #1: And his loyal second in command:

Haven't developed much with Taylor, other than I assumed she'd die given the setting. In general I like to be a discovery writer, and let my characters lead me, but sometimes a plot idea is so good I can't resist. To avoid doing anything out of character, said plot item is usually beyond said character's control, that way they can still react and respond genuinely, but my evil schemes still get realized

Maybe eventually. Right now I lack the time to devote to it, which is why I'm trying to focus on developing my writing with short pieces and on MBI (and now here), while outlining and planning out my longer original work. Hopefully when I'm working, or some time after that, I'll have the time and skill to get writing my own longer-form stuff. I was putting some of my older stuff on Reading Excuses way back when, but I lacked the time to reciprocate the great feedback others were giving me. Maybe if I really get writing this summer, I'll find some time to post some bits and pieces

In one of the stories I'm writing, there's a character who is basically invincible who also has enhanced strength. She wields dual overly large swords, because I figured, if you don't need to worry about enemies getting passed your reach, and you have the arm/wrist strength to carry them, why not fight with two GIANT swords . Her opponents are always like: "Those swords are ridiculous" and then she usually kills them by chopping them in half or something ridiculous like that.

Brandon Hennessy “Hello Brandon! Come on over here--don’t worry, the mean, angry lesbianth won’t hurt you. How’th your boyfriend Lewis? Does Taylor know how much you still mith him?” What? How did that guy with the broken nose know about Lewis, or Taylor? That's how they've lasted so long! With some sort of telepath, the city knew who they could trust and who they couldn't. That made it easy to find epics they could control to defend themselves from epics that they could not. Who knew, maybe this epic could even discern other epic's weaknesses! I'm going to have to be careful around this guy! More importantly, Taylor would have to be careful. Brandon didn't know her weakness, but if word of it got out, he would lose his protection... Now the question was how much did this Reader guy know. Had he seen something in Brandon's past that would seem threatening? Brandon wracked his brain, trying to figure out how his experiences and thoughts might look to a careful observer. As he did, the guard's repeated threats of termination began to run through his mind. While Brandon himself wasn't a threat, he had witnessed Taylor murder a number of the city guards, and was keeping the fact that she was loose in the city, likely killing others to himself. Reader hadn't brought that up yet, so maybe he didn't know? Or was he saving more sensitive information to discuss with his superior's privately? If Brandon revealed Taylor, it might win him points in the city. Perhaps he could find a place here, and the guards and 'tame' epics would keep him safe. On the other hand if he betrayed Taylor... Brandon decided it was better to keep quiet. After all, it was only a matter of time before Taylor found him and rescued him. Besides, if the damage he had seen on his way in was any indication, The Dalles wasn't nearly as safe as it was supposed to be. Apparently while he had been busy thinking through his options, Reader had been given something more to worry about then digging into Brandon's secrets. Apparently his comments to one of the new comers (had he called her Ledge Jumper?) had not gone over well, and said epic somehow caused Reader's pants to drop to the ground. Definitely NOT a safe place. Not safe at all. Hoping to remain unnoticed in all the commotion, Brandon sunk back into his seat and tried not to attract attention.

I think you could limit it by how much probability can be controlled. Like maybe she/he can only alter probability by a max of 25% for example. That would solve a lot of the overly dramatic examples. You could also make the lowest (under 1% ) and highest (over 99%) impossible to affect, and make probabilities more difficult to change the closer they are to these values. 50% odds you could have a lot of leeway with, 25 or 75% you could change but not as dramatically, and 10 or 90 % you could maybe only change a little. You could also say he/she can't affect how much they increase/decrease probability, only the direction they take it in (up/down). Another option would be to give low control over the power, and make it more a passive effect. Some ideas to add to the mix. Edit: you could also make it so he can increase or decrease probability generally, but not differential affect specific targets.

One thing to keep in mind about semi benevolent epics is that stronger epics, especially high epics using the full extent of their power, seem to feel the effects of calamity more strongly, so the sides might be uneven. Of course it seems like we are already playing a little fast and loose with canon here so why not have fun with it I'll try to get a Brandon post up tomorrow asap, but he's mostly just reacting so other people can go first.

I think the main issue here is Steelheart's way of operating is to make people as afraid of him as possible. He would have WANTED news. Granted, maybe at the time of his rending he wasn't thinking this way, but in that case I would argue he also wasn't refined enough to destroy everything without news getting out. A different possibility: mass destruction in a rural area. Maybe Steelheart did have an incredibly violent and documented rending. But, if you have destruction in many major cities, you are going to pay more attention to that then greater destruction in rural areas. Also keep in mind that many of the cities likely experienced more than one high powered epic's rending. My guess is that it's not that Steelheart's rending was unable to be documented, it just wasn't the biggest news. He made a name for himself by coming to Chicago and beginning his reign there. The world was worried about what was happening in the major centres. Not sure how this analysis affects why David didn't know about Dawnslight, but maybe his powers grew in Manhattan slowly? If it was a gradual development, it would make sense that it went unnoticed until all the flash and fury of the rendings was over with.

So apparently I should refrain from using my clumsy thumbs to up vote while on my phone. Edge, I gave you an accidental down vote on that hilarious music video, so I found two other posts to up vote. I'm sure there's a way to remove down votes, but I couldn't find a way using my admin powers . No more phone upvoting for these thumbs!

So I was thinking about it, and if they ever decided to work together, Reader, Backtrack, and Taylor Swift could produce a pretty good Koshei impression. Reader and Backtrack could provide background info, Backtrack could show Koshei to Taylor, then Taylor could shift and mimic his healing with her shape shifting. All they'd be missing is his ability to heal others. Too bad glamours illusions aren't higher resolution. Maybe stage makeup could be used somehow? Not certain what purpose this would serve, or if it would ever work out, but it was a thought.

To be accurate, I wouldn't say he hates lesbians, especially not for their sexuality. It's more that he believes the erroneous stereotype circulated by gay men that all lesbians are angry and boring.

Brandon Hennessy - I'm not sure how much Reader can tell about other people by looking at someone ( like how much he would know about Taylor by looking at Brandon), so I'll tell you what Brandon knows and a bit about him. He's a former wannabe actor, a Canadian, was a servant to Radiance, the epic who ruled Vancouver. Since she died he met Taylor Swift and became her boyfriend, but he's just indulging her for his own protection. He's gay, but his last boyfriend was killed when Calamity first came. He knows Taylor is looking for a Vanilla but not more than that. He also knows about Taylor's powers but not her weakness (again, not sure if Reader would know about Taylor's powers by looking at Brandon). Personality traits: he's vain about his appearance but humble about his abilities and talents. Did not get along with his parents. Generally he's a guy who likes to play by the rules, and believes that if he does he should be fine. Conversely it bothers him when following rules gets him in trouble. He's a charismatic easy going who aside from calamity and the death of his boyfriend has had a pretty easy life. Is that enough ammo for Reader?? Lol.
