  1. I'm fairly sure that the numbering runs clockwise from the top right. This is because the colour of each symbol would then align perfectly with the colour of the associated gemstone. Something like: .9......1. 8...10...2 7....5...3 .6......4.

  3. My personal term for tapping a large amount of a feruchemical attribute at once is "stack". I know that the connotation and flavour is off, as it seems to refer to increasing an attribute from multiple sources, and is used more with video games than anything to do with water, but that's my 0.02 cents worth. PS: yes, two hundredths of a cent. It doesn't fit well enough to be worth a full cent, let alone two.

  6. Yes, but the only way I could think of how to reconcile diminishing returns with conservation of the attributes is to have it be due to measurement error between adding and multiplying. For example, if you look at the totals, spending 2 hours at 50% strength (2 hours * -50% = 100 %hours stored) should allow you to have 1 hour of 200% strength (1 hour * +100% = 100 %hours tapped), but only 30 minutes at 300% strength (0.5 hours * +200% = 100 %hours tapped), or just over 6 minutes at 10x strength (0.11 hours * +900% = 100%hours tapped). The idea that they think of it as multiplicative with feruchemy actually being additive, explaining the "diminishing returns" is sort of supported by the fact that Sazed talks of storing half of one's strength for a time, and tapping to become twice as strong, or ten times, as opposed to wording it as gaining the strength of a second person, or nine additional times the strength, although that would sound quite awkward. I also have trouble believing such a basic mathematical error would remain among some of the most knowledgeable people in the world, unless it was a just simplified explanation.
  7. I was basing that off of a bad interpretation of the text, I had assumed that by "dying soon", it was meant in the next few decades, not in the minutes after the bracers were removed. I'm actually fairly sure that there is no hard limit to Feruchemy, unless it is a limit imposed by the diminishing returns (which we still don't know the precise system of). For example, if you tap 100x weight, you get out 60x, for tapping 1000x, you get 400x, 10 000, you get 2 000x, and tapping 100 000x you get 0x after factoring in diminishing returns. If this is the system, the limit for gaining weight would be about 3000x or so, when you are tapping about 12000x your weight from the metalmind (someone who is better at logarithms/has a better calculator handy could work out more precise numbers).

One thing about Feruchemy that hasn't been fully explored is if there are hard limits to the maximum stored and tapped at once, beyond which it is absolutely impossible to go, regardless of the side effects. For example, without limits an iron feruchemist could store 99.99% of their mass, and become lighter than air. I'm thinking that the limit for tapping Atium is 1024 years, which would fit well with Sazed's statement that TLR would have died soon anyways.
  9. I could easily see Shallan being Brave/Obedient, but I don't see much to support the rest of the things associated with that order. It would have taken a huge amount of bravery to set out looking for Jasnah, only to steal from her (also, a very dishonest thing to do), as well as a strong sense of obedience to her family. I also seem to recall her remarking that this was one of the first times she took initiative herself, instead of just obeying her family. Also, with her spren, she obeyed it when she told it a truth, so that could be obedient as well. There's not much to link her to Ruby, the only one that I could find was that the first time we see her, she gives Yalb a Ruby mark to wait for her (ch. 3, p 70 hardcover). For Soul, I also seem to remember that it felt like she captured a bit of her subjects' soul in her drawings, but couldn't find the quote. Also, it could be that drawing an exact copy of something is not regarded as creative, as the image already exists (it is more like photography than painting/drawing). I didn't find anything for Fire.
  10. I don't attribute most of this to anything special about Dalinar, with the exception of it glowing and having more strength when he saved Elhokar's life from the chasmfiend and . The stabilizing effect would be very odd if it was unique to him, because it happened in our first peek at Shardplate, so I put it in the same category as being able to feel textures through the gloves and being able to see through the helmet.
  11. While I don't think that there is a hard physical limit to the amount of Heat that a person can tap, I don't think that Feruchemy gives you and protection from being at high temperatures. If you were hot enough to affect metal, you would still be cooked.
  12. Does that mean that Just/Confident is for the 2nd order? It seems like this would work about as well that is the case, the connection was much stronger to smokestone, smoke, and exhalation than to Learned/Giving.
  13. I've always had trouble with Shallan and Jasnah both having the ability to soulcast, despite not being associated with Orders that are next to each other. Here's what I've been working off of: 1. Magical abilities on Roshar are shared between adjacent orders, with two powers per order. As an example, order 2 gets powers B and C, Order 3 gets powers C and D, order 4 gets powers D and E, and so on for all 10 orders and 10 powers. I believe that this was directly stated by Brandon, but didn't find the quote. 2. Jasnah belongs to order #2 (Smokestone, Exhalation, Opaque Gas/Smoke/Fog, Learned/Giving). There is good support for this; she uses the smokestone for all of the most powerful soulcasting, from removing the boulder (p90 hardcover) to striking down the thieves in the alley (p 534 hardcover). Before each of these times, she took a deep breath, presumably to exhale when actually releasing the power. She is extremely Learned, being one of the foremost scholars in her field, but not very Giving. EDIT: apparently Learned/Giving is the wrong attributes. 3. Shallan belongs to order #6 (Garnet, Blood, Creative/Honest). Her first soulcasting is turning the goblet into blood, and she later uses the single garnet broam to visit Shadesmar. She is extremely accomplished artistically, showing that she is creative, and it is remarked several times that she is genuine and honest. Telling a truth about herself is also how she accessed Shadesmar, giving a stronger connection to honesty. I have a few ideas of how this could be reconciled, but none seem very good to me. 1. They are in those orders, but they still share a power. This could work if the orders did not go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, instead being more scattered, with 2 and 6 next to each other. This seems unordered, and I think that the magic is more structured than this. 2. One (or both) of them is in a different order that I assumed. This would fix the contradiction, but none of the others fit the characters as well. 3. They have different powers, that only seem the same. Contradicted on p 978 of the hardcover, Jasnah says that (only) two orders had inherent soulcasting ability. Anyone have ideas for this, or is it just too early to get any farther?

It seems like the exact opposite is happening, with Syl gaining a stronger Cognitive presence (intelligence, memory, personality) and Kalading gaining stronger physical presence (Surgebinding abilities). Syl already had some physical abilities when she was a windspren, notably binding objects together, but had no mind. Kaladin's mind is largely the same as before, but he gained a physical power through his connection to Syl.
  15. I believe that TLR already did Copper compounding, which would explain his flawless memory. That's not to say that there aren't secondary effects as well. Allomantic Pewter + Feruchemical Brass: wear heavy, restrictive armour (perhaps make of stone instead of metal?) in a hot climate, and don't overheat. Allomantic Iron + Feruchemical Zinc: calculate orbits of incoming objects, and curve them around your body by pulling them with iron. Then launch them away from yourself. Could also be done with your body and a large anchor. (Zinc could also just be handwaved away, as Allomancy is "instinctual".) Allomantic Cadmium + Feruchemical Steel: great for setting up a single enemy into an ambush. Rush up behind him with Feruchemical Steel, then start a Cadmuim bubble for a few (internal time) seconds. This would give your allies a minute or two to set up. Could also do something similar with Chromium/Steel. Electrum Compounder: Would tapping excessive amounts of Determination cause Allomantic Electrum to show the one path that you decided/would decide on? If that is the case, it could show a single shadow of the optimum path, all you would need to do is follow it exactly. Tin Compounder: Much more useful than doubling your sensory boost, you could selectively dampen them as well by storing the senses you don't want.
  16. Another question, would you have a very low limit on how much you could store at a time? This would be because if you are storing half of your investiture, you are giving up half of your ability to store it, reducing your efficiency. This is also assuming that it isn't like Copper Feruchemy, where it removes it from you permanently when stored.
  17. Do you have any support for this? The Ars Arcanum says that the requirement for touching the object is lost at the ninth heightening (Audible Command), but I didn't see anything about changing the requirement for a clearly spoken Command. This is why cutting out the God King's tongue worked to prevent him from using his Breath. I agree that the visualization can change the effect significantly, but it is still constrained by the Command used to Awaken it.
  18. I'm not sure what ability humans (not Inquisitors) have to burn metals that are inserted into their bodies, or what the limits are. Assuming that it can work far beyond what would be reasonable, this could work: An Aluminum Gnat welds a steel wire to a steel bridge, essentially making the wire and the support one oddly shaped piece of metal. The Gnat then stabs the wire, allowing allomantic access to it. The Gnat then burns Aluminum, which removes all metal that could be burned, including the wire/spike and its attached bridge. This seems quite unlikely, but I don't believe that it is contradicted by any evidence we have. I believe that it would probably stop disappearing at skin level, if it worked at all.
  19. Emphasis added. A good place to look for how this would fit is Three Parts of Magic theory. It seems like the "shape" here is linked to the physical aspect in that theory, which would make it Metals for Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemalurgy, Aons/geography for Aon Dor, Colour for awakening, but I disagree with it on Surgebinding, I think it's the "body focus" (eyes, inhalation, exhalation, etc...) in that case, though I haven't fully thought it out. EDIT: apparently a few posts slipped in while I was typing.
  20. I disagree with this. I believe that for Allomancy, having strength in a metal grants skill inherently, but haven't gathered enough hard evidence to make a thread out of it. Back to the main topic: One way that I could see this working out well is if purity only matters as a total mass of impurities burned, as opposed to a proportion. If this is right, you would get the same amount sick from burning 2 grams of 99% pure metal as 0.04 grams of 50% pure metal, as they both have 20 mg of impurities in them. This would make the purity of the metals Vin burned in her early life unimportant, as the quantity was so low.

  22. Thanks for the quick answers, it turns out my original idea wouldn't work, but when rebuilding my character, I found a few more questions: 1. Complex Evolvers If I'm understanding correctly, A complex evolver permanently evolves a sphere, and adds a single trait, item or ability from a different form. For example, Evolving a Warrior sphere with a Lightsaber spherepiece would result in an Armoured Knight with a lightsaber. Further evolving the sphere would not remove the effect of the spherepiece, resulting in a Shardplate with a Lightsaber. Assuming all of that is correct, when creating a character, do you start with the desired shardpiece for a Compex Evolver, or will it need to be gained separately? 2. Creating new Forms I have an idea for a new set of Forms. Should I post it here as soon as they are ready, or wait and include it in my character application?
  23. This RP is looking pretty amazing so far, I'm thinking of joining up soon. I have some questions first: 1. Which effects (Hunger, Injury, Magic, etc) pass from Form to Form, and from Form to Baseline? How do Forms recover from them? More specific examples: Can you eat while in Form, and become full in your baseline? Can you run until exhausted in one form, switch, then be at full stamina again? You can take fatal wounds while in Form and they do not kill you, but how are less extreme injuries handled? 2. How are a Form's items/resources replenished? Is it just every 6 hours, you get a full (though small) supply of metalminds (for a chemist), a belly full of metal (for a Misting), and a full supply of ammunition (for others)? What happens to things like bullets when you change Forms, do they disappear from the walls and people's bodies? 3. Can I/we add the rest of the Feruchemical powers (Determination, Energy, Breath, etc)? 3b. Does compounding (burning a metalmind for an additional boost, like TLR's Atium) work? 3c. Can Twinborns be a new evolved form (tier 2), or would they need to be a Fused form? I'm thinking of having my character possess both Allomantic and Feruchemical Bendalloy, for creating bubbles of fast time and for nourishment (if food passes to baseline). 4. Do Kandra have the ability to close wounds, take non-human form, or use True Bodies in the Nexus? EDIT: 5. Can you switch Form while under the effects of a bendalloy bubble (using the Womb of Mist), or would that be impossible/too powerful? EDIT TWO: 6. Can Leech still store their own attributes, or is it only that they can take from others?
  24. I always assumed that 100% of the population could become allomancers, but only 16% did, and I don't think that it is directly contradicted anywhere. As for the marbles vs. coins, in order for the "marbles" system to work, it would need to be a significant part of the population. I believe that the largest groups we saw were in the tens of thousands out of millions of people. The marbles example tends to correct for any deviation by warping probability in to maintain a certain level. Also, it is 16%, not 1/16.
  25. No again, the only way for it to logically work is for it to be decided when the group enters the mist. The numbers are remarked as being too exact for probability, larger groups would actually decrease the odds of an exact match if mistsickness vulnerability was determined at birth. As an example, think of flipping coins. If you flip two coins, the chance of exactly one being heads is 50%. If you flip four coins, the chance of exactly two being heads is 37.5%, if you flip 100 coins, the chance of exactly 50 being heads is 8%. They had exact records, so the chances get worse and worse with a larger group, not better. Vulnerability to mistsickness must have been determined when the group entered the mist, nothing else fits the evidence unless the world is much, much more deterministic (no free will) than portrayed.
