  1. I have this amusing vision of the distant past when Devotion told Honor to shove off cause she called dibs on blue.
  2. I remember it being speculated that the thick hairpins might be hemalurgic spikes.
  3. What your thinking of is the second truth she spoke a couple of days later when Shallan confronted Jasnah.
  4. Ta da! I also vaguely recall there being a Word of Brandon that at the end of Words of Radiance Shallan is one oath ahead of Kaladin but I'm too lazy to look for it.
  5. It is actually unclear when Dalinar actually set about to conclusively test Amaram's honesty. After all he does not bond the blade until after Kaladin is imprisoned. This is shown when he withdraws and feigns illness for a week as he bonds the blade "Taln" had with him when he arrived at the war camps. My impression was that prior to the duel Dalinar felt his investigation was sufficient. Lets face it under most circumstances having that much corroborating evidence would be considered more then enough. Kaladin's continued insistence combined with Amaram's less then courageous behavior during the duel with the follow up weak excuse is what probably compelled him to test Amaram with the shard blade and truly settle the matter.
  6. Dalinar didn't confront Kaladin about the results of his investigation until after the duel when Elhokar had Kaladin in chains and before he got moved into prison. In regards to Dalinar not believing Kaladin's claims I willing to give Dalinar a little slack. He did investigate enough to get the accounts of seventeen men. Along with Amaram who he has known for most of his life as the most honorable man he knows. What is he supposed to do with that balance of evidence? Now if Kaladin had been able to take that one extra step and reveal his abilities and have Syl vouch for him then I think that might well have solidly convinced Dalinar. The word of an Honorspren would be hard for Dalinar to discount.
  7. Without actually taking a position on this particular issue the "odds" in this case are fairly irrelevant. It all depends on where Mr. Sanderson wants to take it. I know when I think of unlikely occurrences in Words of Radiance the one thing I keep thinking of is Shallan meeting Tyn. Think about it. After the shipwreck she just happens to run into the one caravan that has the person who planned out the assassination attempt? Really?! What are the odds? I will admit that I'm impressed that Mr. Sanderson wrote this in such a way that most people don't seem to realize how remarkably unlikely that little meetup was.
  8. As I recall Aladar's predecessor, Yenev, didn't have sons or if he did they for some reason didn't automatically inherit. Gavilar conspired with Sadeas to kill him in a duel so that Gavilar could place Aladar in the position.
  9. I'm almost hesitant to bring it up due to the depressing nature of it but there are cultures in the real world that don't put such a high value on the individual lives of their children over that of the family or group. I see it as entirely possible that Shallan's mother could have had a belief in something that was strong enough to make her feel she had to kill her own daughter.
  10. The point for quite a lot of us over say 30 years old is that it is something we grew up with as a phenomenon of our culture. You may not feel any emotional effect but I for one have quite a few fond memories in my childhood getting up to watch Saturday morning cartoons. A bit like going back to your old home town and seeing your old school building torn down. Maybe that corner store that you always went to as a kid is gone now. That kind of thing. To some degree expected or at least understandable but still a bit jarring on an emotional level.
  11. I don't think anyone commenting here didn't like the audiobook versions. This doesn't mean that we can't comment on or critique errors that we do find.
  12. I noticed the change in Lopen's accent as well. I figured it was at least in part caused by the big gap of time between the first and second books. He probably "lost" the original accent in his head and had to make up a new one. I did notice a few "typos" in WoK where Michael Kramer uses words that diverge from the book. In both cases they involve specific items so I figured they were memory slips happening as he spoke.
  13. One of the points Jasnah makes is that what she did wasn't murder in the legal sense. The impression I had was that under the laws of Kharbranth and most likely almost any other nation on Roshar is that it legally amounted to self defense and was therefor lawful. As I recall Shallan in disapproving of Jasnah's actions eventually had to fall back on her personal feelings of right and wrong and not legal definitions after days of study on the issue. It takes a far more socially advanced society to define self-defense as murder.
  14. It appears that each of the orders of the Knights Radiant adhere to a different interpretation of honor. As we can see with Jasnah this varies considerably from order to order. It seems that Jasnah's spren Ivory had no issue with what Jasnah did when killing those four attackers. The fact that she was able to soulcast the attackers implies that Ivory may have even approved. As a counter example when Kaladin had that "schoolyard" fight with Adolin in the dueling arena Sylphrena cut off his stormlight abilities entirely since what he was doing was counter to the interpretation of honor she represents. It seems clear in the future that some of the orders will adhere to interpretations of honor that many here will not agree with. I for one am very interested in what the Releaser(Dustbringer) oaths will be since one of the lines from Words of Radiance indicates that in the past many didn't see much difference between them and voidbringers.
  15. I'm one of those that didn't see a major conflict with the oaths in Jasnah's actions. At least not the first oath. She heard that several people had been assaulted and killed in the alley and local law enforcement had not taken any action. She decided to check into it herself by posing as an easy mark. She and Shallan are attacked by four men with murder obviously on their mind. She kills those men in self defense. Now you could argue that Jasnahs response was harsh but she didn't initiate the confrontation and based on what information we have it wasn't like those four attackers didn't deserve what they got. It was in my opinion no more murder then Kaladin killing Szeth was.
  16. Adolin's phrasing is a little unclear I guess. I figured he meant he had reached his twenty-third birthday.
  17. It is very tentative at the moment. Something I thought of when trying to figure out what other effects the Atmospheric Pressure surge might provide. We'll really have to wait until we get examples of other radiants in combat. I don't count Dalinar since he didn't speak the oaths until the end of the book. Also that scene is a little odd because Syl later made a comment that implied she had to be there for that effect to work.
  18. I think there have been hints of other capabilities associated with Atmospheric Pressure(Adhesion). One obvious one is the scene where Kaladin comes back from patrol. I suspect that was the Atmospheric Pressure surge at work. Changes in air pressure are after all one method used to predict weather in the real world. There is also that scene during the big duel when he came to Adolins aid. Now maybe any knight radiant could have used that effect but I again suspect that the Atmospheric Pressure surge may have been in play here. Perhaps giving him the ability to sense where object were based on the very tiny changes in air pressure they generated combined with the enhanced reflexes and speed stormlight provides.
  19. All I recall is Hoid mentioning that they were at least a week from civilization where Jasnah showed up. Was there a Word of Brandon about this or was it reasonably pieced together by some clues?
  20. Ok...I have to ask Maxal. What exactly does " " mean when you use it? The "leet" speak spelling indicates fear but that doesn't usually seem to be how your, excessively, using it based on context. That one post looked like you were using them instead of periods.
  21. A stray comment in relation to cartoons in one of the other forums got me to wondering. Do they still have cartoons on Saturday mornings? A quick google search brought up this startlingly recent article. This Is the First Weekend in America With No Saturday Morning Cartoons http://tinyurl.com/naqcddp It actually gave me a the-world-just-changed kind of moment. Granted I haven't actually watched them in decades but it is the kind of thing I just kind of always assumed was there.
  22. For most things in the nature of "coming back from the dead" Mr. Sanderson usually manages to put all the clues on the mantel well ahead of time. I can say that as soon as I read the line indicating that Jasnah's body had disappeared I immediately became suspicious that she wasn't dead. As for Syl its been mentioned by Pattern in world and Mr. Sanderson in the past that even the spren of the old knights could be brought back if certain criteria were met.(e.g. The dead sprens knights were still alive.) Kaladin was still alive and to top it off there was a brief scene where he thought he heard her weeping.
  23. My read on it was that he simply had his soldiers helping to organize the trip out to Urithiru. And... So as far as I can tell all his soldiers will be with him and yes he does appear to be taking Taln with him.
  24. Actually based on the message Amaram sent to Restares at the end of Words of Radiance Amaram was heading for Urithiru.
  25. I think at this point it is a generally accepted "Brandon said" kind of thing. Since I do recall Peter confirming the sexuality of one of the Mistborn characters I figure he would probably have done the same with Drehy if it wasn't the case since it has been brought up on numerous occasions. As for a relationship with Skar. Unless they are shown hanging out together in situations where I would not normally expect them to be as part of their duties I'm not really seeing it. Guarding the Kholins, hanging out around the fire at the barracks, and even going out drinking in and of itself is inadequate to even base speculation on. Now if it was noted that they always sat next to each other at the fire or often went out drinking together without the others then that might be something. One scene with amusing banter on the battlefield, not even spoken to each other, isn't enough.
