  1. Thanks, I was hoping for something along those lines. Yup, got it, will do. Rookie mistake. It definitely does!
  2. Do you know exactly when WaT spoilers will be allowed in the general forum? As I said earlier, it could be a while before I get around to it, and I don’t want to spoil anything to myself.
  3. Thank you so much!
  4. Where is this? I’m thinking of getting Wind and Truth for Christmas (giving me time to finish Mistborn and Elantris) and I am going to need this.
  5. This will definitely be super helpful! From your intro post - is this still accurate? (please see the Sharder FAQ if you need tips on editing a post - or other good-to-knows). When I made that post, I was just starting Well of Ascension. Since then, I have finished the original trilogy and am now making my way through the Alloy of Law. Yes, that’s exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for the detailed response! This is all more than I was expecting, and I appreciate your help.
  6. Hey guys, I don't know if this should go here or in the Stormlight forum, but I figured this would be the most fitting. In my preparation for Wind and Truth, I have (far too late) begun to explore the wider cosmere, and become aware of the slew of easter eggs between novels. Since I won't have time to reread the first four books of SA, I was hoping you could provide me with some list of all the most important crossovers and easter eggs from other series. Before the release of WaT, I plan to have read as much of the cosmere as possible, but I'm unlikely to finish it all due to a combination of lack of access to books and lack of time, so I would really appreciate it that any crossovers you include are hidden by spoiler tags clearly labeling the book they are from. Example: (Warbreaker) I will still be checking this after the release of Wind and Truth, by the way, since it will be a couple of weeks before I get it.
  7. Wait… didn’t Brandon at one point confirm there was a kandra loose on Roshar?
  8. What are you all’s theories for the contest of champions? I’ll start with mine: First, Taravangian’s loophole: I’ve heard a lot of people say that Taravangian will find a way to force a draw or delay the contest, but I think this would be too anticlimactic for the end of arc 1. Instead, I think Taravangian’s loophole lies in the fine print: although the agreement states that the contest must be to the death, it never states that it must be a physical fight. First, I think Taravangian will choose himself as his own champion. While Rayse probably wouldn’t have, Taravangian will see Dalinar’s move to choose himself as champion as an invitation to do so as well (Dalinar’s first mistake). Second, Taravangian will simply choose a type of contest that he knows he can beat Dalinar in; likely some battle of will. And Taravangian will win; but not all hope will be lost. Think: what separates Taravangian from Rayse, besides brutal intelligence? That’s right, mercy. Everything Taravangian has done, it is to protect the lives of as many people as he can. Now, as Odium, Taravangian seeks to protect all the peoples of the Cosmere by bringing them under his rule. I think that, somehow, in his final moments, Dalinar will show Taravangian the horrors that await him should he go down that path. Horrors Dalinar is well acquainted with, for he experienced similar ones in his conquest of Alethkar. Taravangian, in shock, will see truth in Dalinar’s words. And in a final act of mercy, of protection, Taravangian will see that Dalinar is more worthy of wielding the Shard of Passion. Taravangian will let go of the shard, in an act that kills him, and Dalinar will take it. Hear me out: first, I don’t believe that Odium is truly the shard of hate; all shards have a specific intent, that is kept in balance by the other shards. Ruin wants to ruin, Preservation wants to preserve, Cultivation wants to cultivate growth, Honor wants to cultivate honor, and Odium… Odium wants to cultivate passion. Why passion? Because it perfectly balances out Honor. Think about it: Honor is all about following a strict code, while passion is all about spontaneity, emotion. Often, this emotion has been wielded for harm, but it doesn’t have to be; after all, who better to wield the shard of rage, of hate, of impulse, than the man who has conquered his own? Of course, that is not to say that the Shard’s intent won’t corrupt Dalinar; that is an issue for the back half of the series, which I predict will see the Shards of Honor, Odium, and Cultivation all united under one person. Wild Cards: Szeth son-Neturo, the Assassin in White, Truthless of Shinovar, will have a big role to play in these events. Not only will it be his flashback book, but it will also probably see him swear his fifth ideal. The fifth ideal of the skybreakers, becoming the law, is all about breaking free of bonds and trusting one’s own judgement, something Szeth has always struggled with. And to who is Szeth’s strongest bond to right now? That’s right: Dalinar Kholin, the man I believe will take up Odium. The only reason I see for Szeth to need to swear the fifth ideal is to make a controversial judgement, one Dalinar would not approve of, but that Szeth believes is necessary. Cultivation is another major wildcard; I don’t think she expects Taravangian to relinquish the power, and will definitely have something to say about this outcome. So, there’s all my theories, longer than expected. What are yours?
  9. Thank you so much! Yeah, I suspected something like that. I guess I'll just get the book then, and maybe get the set with the other four.
  10. When you site in the backseat in a long car ride and imagine lashing yourself out the window.
  11. Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this, but do we have any information regarding when we will get the full boxed set for SA books 1-5? I'm wondering because I'm trying to decide whether to pre-order Wind and Truth and get it when it releases, or wait until we get the complete boxed set containing the other books as well (which I have read on kindle, but will most definitely reread, preferably in hardcopy). I understand that it could take a while before the boxed set releases, which is why I am debating if it makes sense.
  12. Well… technically, yes, he MIGHT die. But I find it unlikely. First, I don’t think the contest will necessarily be a fight. Correct me if I’m wrong, but if I remember correctly, nowhere is it explicitly stated that the contest will be a fight to the death. I think this could be the loophole that TOdium will try to exploit. I think he (Taravangian) will choose a contest that will benefit him, regardless of the outcome. Most likely, it will be a battle of wits of some sort, where he will try to “break” Dalinar in some way. Personally, I hope that the contest doesn’t end with Dalinar’s side winning the contest outright. It would be far more fulfilling for Dalinar to instead convince TOdium, possibly by showing him the consequences of the path he is setting out to take - reminiscent of Dalinar and Gavilar’s own journey - to give up the contest, to not go down this path of conquest and bloodshed. Perhaps - though this might be too far - Taravangian can be convinced to give up the shard of Odium.
  13. What definition are you using?
  14. oh... sorry. Do you need to read the entire thread to understand what's going on?
  15. According to the dictionary, "saturated" is defined as "(of an organic molecule) containing the greatest possible number of hydrogen atoms, and so having no carbon-carbon double or triple bonds." Hydrogen alone does not make water.
  16. As the words left his mouth, Tenth found them release a burden within him, one he had been carrying for the past twelve hours. At last; he had said it. Whatever happened next, it was outside his power. All Tenth wished was for this whole ordeal to be over, a thing of the past. His relief, however, was short lasted. The being before them curled it's lip in disdain, then threw its head back and let out a low, scratchy gargling sound. It was a laugh. OK guys, I'm trying something new here, I've only read the last page of replies so I don't know if I'm doing this right. Here goes!
  17. Okay, time to end this once and for all. Well... Short answer: probably yes Long answer: According to the dictionary, the term "wet" is defined as "covered or saturated with water or another liquid." Nothing in this definition states that liquid itself is wet, only that items covered in liquid are wet. So honestly, it depends. A single water molecule, such as you might find in a mist, is technically not wet, since it is not in contact with any liquid other than itself. In a larger collection of molecules, though, say a raindrop, the water IS wet because each molecule is covered in other molecules of liquid. Of course, even this is the simple answer. If we want to go really deep, the word "cover", as seen in the definition for "wet", is defined as "to envelop in a layer of something." The word "envelop" is defined as "wrap up, cover, or surround completely." So, the definition of "wet" is: "wrapped up, covered, surrounded completely, or saturated by water or another liquid." Note the "surrounded completely". Keeping with the raindrop example, this would mean that only the molecules in the center of the drop are wet, not the ones on the outer edge, since they aren't completely surrounded. Of course, this is all overlooking the "saturated" part of the definition, but since molecules can't be saturated with other molecules, I think that can be disregarded. So, how'd I do? Did I resolve the question once and for all?
  18. Love this theory! I myself have been thinking about the ideals a lot, especially the fifth ideal, and what I came up with was a little different. I think that the fifth ideal is less about exemplifying qualities, and more about personal choice. I feel like this is a little too off topic compared to the other oaths, and doesn’t really match with the sky breaker fifth ideal. With their fifth ideal, the skybreakers “become the law.” While this could be interpreted as an incarnation of Nale’s divine qualities, I think the more important piece of it is the radiant making their own choices about what justice is and what it looks like, making their own code, in a way. I see this more as an ideal of ascension than incarnation. For this reason, I believe the fifth ideal of the wind runners should also be about a radiant’s choice and setting their own code. Most importantly, it is about trusting their judgement, something Kaladin has always struggled with. My theory for this oath is: “I will choose how and who to protect, and trust my judgement.” I made another post about this if you would like to check it out:
  19. Gotta go with Amaram so far. Just an absolute jerk. *Blinks rapidly* I… guess I don’t know?
  20. “I will choose how and who to protect, and trust my judgement.” I made a post about this roughly an hour ago. This reflects the skybreaker fifth ideal of “becoming the law” and taking control, or being unbound.
  21. I listened to the rythmatist as an audiobook, and started reading white sand as a graphic novel but couldn’t get through it.
  22. Hello everyone! I started my cosmere journey in January with the Way of Kings, and have now read the full Stormlight Archive (looking forward to Wind and Truth), Warbreaker, and I am now reading the Mistborn original trilogy. I’ve been browsing the shard for a while now and chose to join to share some of my theories. My pronouns are he/him. I look forward to engaging with many of you on the Seventeenth Shard!
  23. Thanks! I agree that perhaps the ideal should explicitly mention “I will protect”, but I also think that the most important part is that it gives radiants the ability to choose how they use their power, culminating their arc. I will definitely be heading over to the introduction Forum!
  24. So, I was thinking about the patterns between radiant oaths, and I came up with an idea for a fifth ideal for the wind runners. Many of the theories that I’ve seen circulating around here and on Reddit show the fifth ideal formatted similarly to the others, things like “I will allow others to protect me” or “I will protect all parts of a person, not just physically but also mentally and spiritually.” Both of these ideals stand as pretty individual ideas, building off previous oaths but standing alone. Most importantly, they offer yet another guideline for radiants to follow. I don’t think this matches with the fifth ideal of the skybreakers. In Oathbringer, we learn that the fifth ideal of the skybreakers is “I am the law.” Unlike the theories I’ve seen about the windrunner fifth ideal, this oath is a true culmination of a radiants journey. Instead of setting yet another guideline to follow, it allows radiants to take matters into their own hands and, most importantly, trust their judgement. This is why the fifth ideal is so hard to reach; it takes considerable strength to take off the training wheels, so to speak, of the previous oaths and learn to fly. For these reasons, I believe that the fifth ideal of the windrunners will be something along the lines of: “I will choose who to protect, and how to protect them. I will trust my judgement.” For all the previous oaths, radiants have been following strict guidelines on how to behave, almost like a little child. The previous ideals are all training so that, once the radiant takes control, they know how to behave and don’t abuse their power. This oath will also be the culmination of Kaladin’s arc because throughout the series, he has struggled with making decisions about who to protect. A major part of his arc has been about accepting he can’t protect everyone. During the siege of Kholinar in OB, he freezes up because he realizes that he has friends on both sides, and is unable to choose who to protect. (This is my first post, so sorry if it became a rant. I hope I’m doing things right)
