  1. Ohh ok so make the power and manipulation of electromagnetic fields based on knowledge? Btw I just did some research on Elecrtomagnetism and apparently it is a fundamental part of physics.. I think that would be very interesting for worldbuilding, similar to how Sanderson took the concept of action and reaction in his magic systems. People also generate electromagnetic fields around them too, which is super cool. I think ultimately I will just have to limit exactly which aspects of Electromagnetism I am focusing on, and maybe don't use so much science... honestly the more I research the more confused I get, because everything has electromagnetism involved. Back to the magic system itself, This could be a cool idea of how I can make the idea of electromagnetism into different divisions, such as people who can manipulate radiant energy for illusions or similar (but some can figure out how to manipulate higher or lower spectrums), those who can manipulate electrical currents like shoot lightning, I am thinking about also people that can enhance themselves (speed, strength, etc) by strengthing their electromagnetic fields, and also those who specialize on neuro electricity or smth like that where they can do cool psionic stuff like telepathy. Right now I am just wandering if there are other divisions i can create... >_< Edit: Ferrimagnetic metals would be interesting here, since people that can move objects maybe requires this to amplify or smth with their powers. Still thinking about how this works tho Here is a cool link from Wiki about Electromagnetism.
  2. Yea, I can see lots of possibilities with this. What about electric themed psionic magic? Like telekinetics with maybe magnetic fields to move objects like you said, and manipulating or reading electric signals within the brain, sort of like telepathy or similar. I can already picture characters who throw lightning at each other, but all in all the biggest problem is coming up with limitations or costs, like Sanderson's third law states. Thanks for the ideas Additionally, after some "scientific" research I realized that electromagnetic abilities include the EM waves spectrum. That means manipulation of light and stuff, which might be broken if people can just start shooting gamma rays out of their hands. Do you have any ideas on how to possibly limit this with a limitation rather than a cost? I cant think of any atm...
  3. Wow, these sound very interesting! I'm not planning to go into too much science on electricity, since it is a little too complicated, but I agree that electricity and magnetism should definately go together, and it can make very interesting uses. I was thinking about something related to a person having innate abilities to manipulate and generate lightning, since living beings already sort of generate some electricity. An immediate thought from this is that maybe people can sense living things from the electricity or spark within them... I am also trying to think of other things related to electricity, like maybe people can use it like telekinetic abilities because of magnetism and all. Please let me know if you think of anything interesting from this, I can feel lots of potential in this theme (pun intended)
  4. Hey all, I am curious on what ideas can be associated with electricity, and what kind of magic system can come from this theme. Please share if you have any ideas! Thank you!
  5. Solfire can be manipulated into shapes, but nothing too big or fancy, plus the individual needs to know how to create the item itself, similar to aetherbounds (not sure if i got the name right) creating things with whatever aether spores are in them. Also, the object is an extension of the person's body, and it manifests as a sort of solidified golden light (from the Dawnbird). So to put it in combat terms Solfire can turn into a sword that is tangible enough to cut things in the physical realm, but requires concentration of the Solfire and knowledge of the object being created. The linking of Solfire can be forced or allowed, but if it is forced the connection becomes unbalanced, where one side can "mind read" the other while not allowing the other to do the same. Even worse, if the connection is forced one might be able to physically control another. The act of controlling another is seriously frowned upon like the imperium spell in the Harry Potter series, since free will is important. When the connection is voluntary it will be more equal, where both sides can communicate and share like how a normal conversation works. Normally everyone has a natural defence against invaders with their Solfire, but that can get stronger through training. For Runescribing, in my head the runes are basically a language. The Primordial Runes and the Runes of Power are unchangable, but runes can change their meaning over time, just like how stars may shift or change over aeons. Some runes may even be lost, and the Astrians definately do not know all the runes, since they are as numerous as the stars, so there are constantly new runes being discovered. The Dawnbird is a sentient being, much like a shard but is called a Daemon in my world. The Dawnbird is formed from Belief of the Sun, the concept that the Sun will rise and set everyday. In my world, Belief is an important concept since in the cognitive realm (Etheria), a universal belief can manifest and concentrate into raw power. This is also why Ley Lines form in places of strong history and Belief, such as the ancesterial home of a tribe or a monument honoring the dead. Runes are also the manifestion of Belief, of concepts turned into action. Thanks for all of these prompts, you helped me so much in developing my world so I can finally use this for writing :>.
  6. Solfire is basically like the aura of a person, so concentrating the aura requires training and to draw them out in runes requires study of the runes and a strong intent of what they want the runes to do. While Solfire cannot run out since it is a part of a person, prolonged use of it will cause a burnout, where the person is unable to concentrate their Solfire to form runes. There are different stages of burnouts, basically how tired a person gets from how much Solfire things they have been doing. Solfire can also be used as a weapon itself without Runescribing. Since the purpose of Solfire from the Dawnbird was to make humanity more harmonized, Solfire can be sensed from other people (think Magium), can be hardened into a protective shield around the person's body to block weapons or the invasions of other's Solfire, and can be attached to another person to allow telepathy, where the two individuals can communicate to one another without the need to speak. The Dawnbird believes in free will, therefore lets the Astrians (humans in Astralis) use the ability as they wish, but hopes that Astrians will grow more harmonized through more connection with one another (this idea needs more thought, kinda confusing). The idea to limit the knowledge of Runescribing would be a cool plot in my story, where there are evil and selfish organizations that discover new runes but limit these to use it themselves. The runes are basically a language of power, coming from the Primordial Runes themselves, so these organizations would definately want to limit new runes they discover. I just thought of a lot of this yesterday (and drew inspiration from a whole lot of different things), please let me know if you have any more questions/suggestions
  7. Ohh, I just had an awesome idea from this. Basically I can have special constellations or stars in the sky, and each star represents a rune. Of course, I won't be able to name all of them, but basically these stars represent different ideas, such as abundance, freedom, etc... So these are like words and ideas, and the drawing of Runes called Runescribing allows people to concentrate Solfire in the shape (idea, concept) of a rune.
  8. It turns out... the new challenger was their own reflection in a mirror. Their own dark desires from attaining so much power, and the need to get MORE!!!
  9. I just had an idea for combining psychic powers with fire as in the psychic powers manifest in something called Solfire, which is from the Dawnbird. An example for the application of the psionic powers would be telekinesis, where Solfire appears around the object and can be moved around, or mind controling others where Solfire consumes the other person's autonomy and freewill. I think Solfire should burn on emotions or intent, so powerful emotions might lead to a brighter burn of Solfire. Also, combining the rune thing might be tricky, but I can think of people using Solfire to enhance attributes, whether physical or mental. So maybe the rune magic should be the main magic system, while the psychic powers are a subset of it, both using Solfire to function. I am still thinking about how people obtain Solfire... but maybe from the Sun? Maybe the Solfire is internal. I am thinking about making this all fire focused, where everyone has a flame within them, and that is also the power of their mind. The Solfire burns as long as the people are alive, and prolonged use of Solfire will drain emotions and causes exhaustion and apathy. I think that could relate with the character I have in mind, and would make interesting character arcs especially for villains. Now i just need to incorporate this into the Runecarving magic system, which is tricky...
  10. To be honest I don't really have a clear religious focus of my world yet. So far, I have a god named the Dawnbird (basically a phoenix) that basically represents the sun, and are worshipped by the people. Therefore, fire and light are huge symbols of the religion of the Dawnbird. The general powers I want for my world should be light, sky, or star themed but related to the mind or emotions. But right now I am stuck between two ideas of the magic system, where one is Runecarving I mentioned earlier where the properties of objects can be enhanced or changed with runes and the other is Psychic Magic since it has so much possibilities, such as illusions and others with light. I am more leaned towards psychic magic, but i am having trouble turning that into a sky, star, light, or Fire theme. I think I need the most help with that. Thanks for helping me:)
  11. I was thinking of creating a hard magic system for star magic, since most are usually related to constellations or similar. But, I can't think of any ways to make mine different, so I swapped to something related more to the skies, such as weather magic. However, I don't want elemental magic, so honestly I made myself confused I created a world already, just don't have a magic system for it that matches its thematics. My world is named Astralis, which is basically a bunch of skylands in a venus-like earth, so thats why they live above the clouds. That's why I figured sky or star magic would match the theme here. My other thought is implimenting a psychic magic system, but somehow related to the stars or the skies, but I can't think of how to combine these... I think it would make a good limitation to use different times of year and locations for different powers. Previously in another post I explored something related to rune magic, where the user can enhance or change the attribute of objects by runecarving, such as adding a sharp rune on a sword to enhance its sharpness or changing the property of a door by adding a barrier rune to it, which makes it impossible to open. I was wondering whether i can make this magic system star or sky themed... which i am having trouble with sadly... this would be interesting, but there are so many stars, so to make this work i will probably have to make my own sets of constellations. But it would definately be interesting if i can make it work or somehow incorporate this into my runecarving magic system.
  12. Hello everyone! I need some help with brainstorming some ideas for a star and sky based magic system. If anyone can put down their thoughts here that would be great, thanks!
  13. This is great! It is similar to what I thought about Belief, so maybe Etherea's energy gathers in places where people have a strong Belief. So maybe my world can be religion focused. However, Ley Lines can also concentrate at other significant places. I have not thought about the division of power at different locations and exactly how that works, but I love your ideas about the Places of Power, so I will do some more world building for Astralis and think about places where people would have a strong Belief. Also from what I previously mentioned about Chronis, it is basically the History of an object or location. Its basically a universal term for memories, so for example two swords made exactly the same way could have a different Chronis based on their different uses and history. Lets say one sword was for decoration while the other is frequently used by a soldier. These two swords would no longer be the same, but it does not mean that one is worse than the other. For the application of the concept of Chronis, it will be similar to the sword Sting in Lord of the Rings. It glows when it is close to Orcs, because its crafter held a deep hatred towards Orcs. Therefore these objects with Chronis spiritually meld towards their uses, so the sword might be able to bond with its user and become better for combat, while the decorative sword which holds memories of the family who place them there will shine brighter and meld itself to its purpose. So in summary Ley Lines gather in places of Chronis or Belief (decided to make them the same thing), and the place or object spiritually melds themselves to match their Chronis. I love the ideas of the Regalia items, since it perfectly matches what I thought about objects with Chronis. Also, the idea of Temporal Ley Lines is wonderful because the idea of a surge of power could make my plot very interesting (also allows me to subtly help my characters). Maybe my characters can even create temperory Ley Lines, similar to how Delinar Kholin can open Honor's Perpendicularity as a Bondsmith. Yes that's true, I don't think I should just eliminate Runecarving entirely... but I was thinking of using the Physical and Chemical Properties of matter to make the enhancing part work, but this might seem too scientific. Right now I am stuck between two systems, where one is based on Chronis and the other is based on Enhancement. I really want to combine the two together, but I don't really know how... I really love the idea of taking the property of one object and placing it on another. It would be more like a copy-and-pasting rather than stealing, so neither objects gets destroyed. But here another problem emerges, because I can't think of things to stop people from just infinitely adding properties to objects, except maybe a medium that runs out when people do the carving, such the the earlier Sunfire ideas, but instead of igniting, maybe Sunfire is a medium that runs out as people use it to carve. The other idea is based on enhancement and change, where the physical properties include their color, density, conductability, durability, malleability, etc... while the chemical properties are the object's ability to change and reaction to other substances. I also really like this system, but I can't think of a way to incorporate this to my other Chronis system without breaking the logic of both. The Dawnbird is a denizen of Etheria, the spiritual Aspect of the Sun. It is basically like a god because of how strong of a belief is tied to the sun. The Duskbird is most likely the Moon? Its the same bird, but different based on the time. People believe as Dawn comes the Sun will rise, while when Dusk approaches the Moon will rise. I think this is a little different from the idea I have in mind, but I could definately incorporate some of the ideas. It should be possible to carve on liquids and gasses, since Runecarving should not actually be physically carving on the object. I think it manifest more as a light, because the concept of the Sun and Light is extremely important in my world. So maybe runes are traced on an object through a concentration of power, like how it is done in the book and TV series the Dragon Prince. For the thought on whether runes are permanent or temperory, maybe there are different types of runes, so maybe some runes are made for only a few uses while some runes are carved to last through time. Maybe it depends on how concentrated the power is, so the more power is put into a rune the longer it will stay and not dissipate. There should also be a tool used for carving. I don't want to use a stamp (I am really proud that Sanderson got the idea from my country though). Instead, I want to maybe use some type of drawing tool, such as a paint brush or similar. Maybe different people use different tools, so some can use a needle and thread, while some can use a sketching set, or even a stamp. Basically I want to include art since I really love art, so this might be a little similar to the idea about crafting in the Circle of Magic books. For the trait transfer of an object, its the part that I am the most confused about. I think I should change the idea of copying and transfer to something more like the runes already hold such power, so its just more like enhancement. Therefore, objects don't trade properties but instead they gain properties. For example, carving a Durability rune on a sword might make it stronger, carving a Fragile rune at a table might make it easier to break, and carving a Barrier rune to a door might make it become impossible to open. I think that essentially makes the runes into words or codes to decode or encode Properties onto and object, or remove properties from objects. The uses of this ability will depend on the user's creativity and their understanding of the object. Runecarving onto oneself is an amazing possibility, but I will need to think of ways to not make this overpowered. The use of this might be similar to the concept in Dragon Prince, like where Callum painted runes on his arms and turned them into wings. I've decided to make runes temperory and the time it lasts is based on how much power was put into it, so when the sunfire (or some other cool name, basically like ink but glows) placed on the rune is exhausted, the rune disappears. There will definately be nice visuals involved in the use of runes. Sorry if I sprouted out too many different ideas, I think my brain went into hyper mode after seeing so much new ideas from you haha I've just looked at the wiki for these, its really interesting! I think I like the idea from Cold Fire Trilogy where ideas can manifest physically, as that would really match with my theme of the power of Belief. Also from the Runelords series I like the ideas of the traits of people being modifiable, but I don't want it to be a cut-and-pasting type of magic, I want it to just be an adding type of magic where Runes use Sunfire to carve new properties, enhance existing properties, or change existing properties. That would allow for a huge amount of versaility, much similar to spell casting but instead it is based on the traits of things. The problem I am facing now is how to combine the idea of Chronis into this system...
  14. hmm these are some really good questions to think about, and I have been thinking all day today about my questions and came up with these: Rune weaving should be changed to rune carving, and maybe users are called Runecarvers. I want to focus on the Ethereal realm (Etheria) which is basically a cognitive realm or spiritual realm that a person's cognitive aspects rest in. From this realm, in the material realm there are Ley Lines which is where power from Etheria seeps out since it is close to the material realm. Usually ley lines appear in places with important meanings, such as a place where a lot of lives was lost or basically places with a lot of history or Chronis. About whether I am altering or combining the Identity of objects, it will be tricky because I can't exactly see how I can take the sharp property of a sword and place it on a door. I still haven't thought of exactly what these properties will be so this will need some more serious thinking. Therefore, I thought of something really cool that would be a lot easier to impliment: Perhaps the properties are not borrowed or altered, but they are enhanced. That way, a sword becomes sharper, a wall becomes tougher, or water can become colder and freeze or evaporate. This basically follows the physical properties of objects taught scientifically. If i can somehow add in modifications of the chemical properties of objects this can get really interesting. The problem with this is that I cannot see how to incorporate rune carving into this... maybe that is related to changing the chemical properties, while changing the physical properties of an object is more of a cantrip type of magic which doesn't use runes? If i will still use the manipulation of the properties of objects, perhaps I will need to clarify that each object has a specific set of properties, such as a door being an entrance, wood, or a cup being glass (don't know how to describe its function). Anyways, basically the properties of an object consists of its function and materials, but then another problem is then diving into what exactly the "base" materials are, or the "base" functions or else all objects are going to each have different functions. So it will be very confusing... I think the power driving and limiting the use of runecarving would be something external. I was playing with the idea that emotions are drained as runecarving is done, but it didn't really make sense, so I changed it to something else. It needs to be some type of energy, maybe something from the ethereal realm? In my world named Astralis, the Dawnbird (a phoenix) is basically the world's god or daemon, so i was thinking about something like maybe the runecarvers need to "burn" or "ignite" themselves with sunfire to do runecarving, and the danger is that they can heat up and burn to ashes. I'm not sure if all of this makes sense or not... If you have any more suggestions that would be great!!!
  15. Hey everyone! This is my first time posting, and I wanna ask for help for creating a magic system based on transmutation and soulcasting from Stormlight Archive. I am not sure what to call it yet, but so far I thought of just calling it Animancy or Runeweaving something similar because the core concept of this magic system is that all objects have a (anima) soul, and that soul is basically the definition we attach to these objects. For example, a door is not just a piece of wood because we see it as a method of entering another place, therefore the identity or soul of the door is different from a piece of wood. One of the biggest problem I am having right now is how similar this is to the idea of soulcasting in Stormlight, and also to the concept of identity. Is there a way I can make my magic system different? While this magic system is based off of the concept of Plato's philosophy, soulcasting, and transmutation, I want a unique system of magic even if the core concept of it is the same. While soulcasting is part of a larger system of Surgebinding, I am seeing my magic system as the larger system itself. An example of a difference I thought about would be the use of runes to transform objects instead of stormlight and gems. These runes are able to change the anima of an object and make them something else. Basically, I am trying for the first time to do some worldbuilding and writing a novel but I don't want to accidently copy Sanderson's soulcasting. Any advice, suggestions, or criticisms would all be welcomed! I am at my wit's end here so I need help
