    “I will do so. I do hope we can have a pleasant relationship, even if you oppose the original on principle.” ‘Rebus’ smiles at the inkling. “There’re new Narrators around, of course. The real Rebus, the Scribe, Lady Bug, Faunus, Fael, and Tam are ones I can think of off the top of my head. Bacon is still here, as are Subversion, Sequence, and likely others. There are some antagonistic Narrators, namely Atriedies. I’ve likely forgotten someone, but Rebus will not tell me.”

    Kion ducks backwards. “Protection!” He surrounds the group in shimmering shields, but that sword looked like it would punch through in a few hits. But he’s so panicked he cannot think of other spells to use.

    Kion’s eyes go wide with alarm. He stammers slightly but says. “Stop right there or I - someone - can kill you.”

    Rebus sighs. “Very well. Could you at least give me a shut-down button?” Rebus is creating a copy of him and having the security system mind control him to direct his Narration. Why he is doing that is thus far unclear, though I do know. “The copy of me there has removed his own Narration, and is a sanitized copy, as I mentioned. But yes, he can very much steal Narration.” “My plans? Did I not just tell you I would not reveal my machinations?” He raises an eyebrow. “And regardless, if you were to look, you’d see I am no longer a Narrator. All I have is my nanotechnology, teleporter, and a real Narrator me sending me information.”

    I should be going to sleep (I must wake up early tomorrow). But I’m not. Rebus mentioned it, actually. “I believe if Devastation has contact with the power, he can siphon it into himself and is empowered, temporarily or permanently causing the victim to lose their magic and/or soul.” Rebus smiles. “Your Author has a tendency to name people the same thing. I am similar to what you described, but I never died. My sanitized copy - I got the idea from you actually - might. He should sleep now, as I am not speaking well.” “And if I am to be mind controlled, I would like the ability to turn it off, at least.”

    ‘Rebus’ frowns. “That metaphor doesn’t even make sense. Redundant and confusing. Actually, that is an interesting idea.” Rebus, on the other hand, can’t do anything about the Foreshadowing for several reasons.

    Good night. Rebus looks at Afterimage. “Shouldn’t you speak orange? And I believe you fighting Desolation, if it comes to that, will cause more harm than good. If I am not conflating two characters, he eats powers.” “You misunderstand, in that you believe I do. I had thought he struck the final blow, though there may have simply been an unrelated fight between them.” He sighs in return. “You believe the Narrators to be unified? And truly, you are keeping me alive at the moment, counteracting my Author’s better judgment.”

    ‘Rebus’ wracks his brain. “Wasn’t that Platypus?” He smirks. “But yes, I understand you are powerful. But you cannot have plans yet, and I do. Perhaps you can bring down another great Narrator…”

    Rebus’s eyes grow wide, not with fear, but with interest. “Foreshadowing… it is a useful tool, but to be used sparingly. Otherwise, it can reveals conspiracies and machinations early, defeating the purpose.” He winks while his eyes turn steel grey. Tendrils of utility fog twist around his long coat, and he smirks. “Your blade is doing something to me, but I have prevented its primary function. I am no longer me, and never plan to be.” Rebus smiles, a bit distracted by the climatic battle, the being who can threaten the Thread itself, and the fact his Author is about to go to sleep. “Excellent, excellent. We can put the control room on the other side of your interface, and my room next to it, diagonal to yours. Usually, of course; I believe we agreed the building should restructure from time to time.” Rebus smiles fondly at the Thread. I’m sorry, but I will not flee more than I just did. I need to defend you, so I have cut my ties and am prepared for sacrifice.

    “Mine, or another’s? I am a Narrator, though I am not.” He smiles back at the puddle, deciding to prompt his Author point out his utility fog and teleporter before combat potentially begins.

    It only takes the mention of ink to remember who Desolation is, though his Author does not know everything. Rebus carefully sends his Narrative power to his other clones, then smiles. “Hello, Desolation. What brings you here?”

    Rebus’s attention is instantly acquired. He’d heard of this being, but knew little. Of course, because he has clones, he keeps doing other things as well. One of them is to look for someone who knows how to find Plotblades.

    Ever heard of high-frequency stock trading? Although I suppose autoclickers exist. This one’s hard. You can locally change the way science works if you know the specific subject intimately.

    I think the backlash should be a thing whoever’s contesting you could do. My ideas document has the following list of magic costs: Causes pain, lose memories, gain scars; less power for passive magic, if you run out you die; your power goes to others, you strengthen some sort of monster that hunts you, energy (gravitational potential energy?), you disappear but keep aging. I think memory loss could be an interesting cost, since knowledge is so important to magic. It lets spellbook-like things exist, as well.

    That’s a good idea. Perhaps we should have some sort of cost to magic, maybe just exhaustion but potentially something worse, and the two people conflicting both run through that reserve until one runs out or stops.

    Rebus smiles. “It is your tower, after all. I’ll lend you ideas and use of Abstract, so we can make new features later.”

    Alvar continues following along, his crossbow loaded and his water tanks full. He quietly cracks his knuckles and stretches as he walks along.

    I like needing an intricate knowledge of what you’re trying to do. Weakening the strong force is probably not allowed, though. Maybe you’re not allowed to know particle physics without intensive screening, because you can use it to make atoms explode.

    I’m out of technology questions for the time being… never mind. Do we want laser weapons? Or cybernetics? How much does it hurt to get hit by a drive plume that fast? Or is it reactionless?

    Rebus smiles. “Alright, let’s make this thing! We can nail down the details with retcons if needed.” @SpiritOfWrath, because you’re there too.

    Alvar stalks along, checking his equipment thoroughly. He stays close to Jerehlu, completely willing to take any opportunity handed to him.

    I think you wrote manomachines or something. Rebus nods, storing the Nullite until the offices are actually constructed. “I’ll see if I need more.”

    Interesting! I changed my mind. I think I’ll teach temperature-independent phase changes, rather than teleportation. Or specialize in that magic and teach applied magic and physics. Do we want a masquerade (e.i. normal people don’t know about magic)? Magic items? Wands? Any costs to using magic?

    Ooh! Can I do space magic? Like teleportation and stuff, not stars. It fits our vibe so far, I think.
