    It’s real late, so I’ll continue this conversation tomorrow. Rebus appears, still dressed in his sleek black and white armor. The electrical arcs have stopped, but orange lights - as always - pulse along his long coat and the groves in the armor. He smiles brightly, not showing the lingering sense of mild disappointment and bitterness to non-Narrators. “Ruia. Excellent seeing you, as usual. You did well, with Malevolence and Malan. Have you received your other visitors yet?”

    Your spooky message about Rebus’s Plotblades. How something would pursue you if you took them. Incidentally, Rebel woke up from his resting. @NameIess Ruia hears a soft ringing coming from wherever she stores things as Rebus sends a teleportation request.

    Eh, it’s fine. I was gone all day anyway, and I can reuse my surprises with further foreshadowing. I think Cricket has it still? Do you want to kick off the vengeful curse thing?

    Hmm? RAFO. Or are you just wondering why Rebus is there at all?

    Wait, I missed the whole fight? I had some stuff prepared… Rebus goes back to existing, and looks around. The Ennulling has stopped, and everyone has left. “Well, that was rather anticlimactic. I suppose Cricket winning was inevitable, but Malan could have at least waited for me to get this syringe in him first.” He walks over to Malan’s corpse, and looks down at it. “You failed, Malan. The ones who do know what they are doing will learn from your mistakes.” Darkness flows out of Malan and into Rebus’s armor. “And the Machination. That should save us, as much as I may resent them.”

    Rebus nods. “I’ll hope he learns neither of those things, and keeps wasting his time trying to get there on his own. If you don’t need anything, I should get going. There are some problems that need dealing with, and the fallout from them could be problematic if I have too many clones active. If you do need something, I can - and should, probably - drop the research clone for the time being.”

    Rebus meets it with utility fog, backed by Abstract. The Ennulling does get through, but slowly. Rebus waves a hand, spearing Cricket, Rose, and Bat (@Halcyon The Only) each with a spike of utility fog. It causes immense pain, but that stops after a brief moment as nanomachines shut down pain receptors and scaffold broken bones. Rebus looks apologetic for a moment, but then turns his attention back to Malan. He walks closer, electricity arcing towards him in a larger burst as he sends a significantly more harmful spear of nanomachines at the Ennuller. He smirks at Malan, pulling two metal rods from within his nanotech armor. I must sleep and will be very busy tomorrow, but I have something dramatic (actually several things) for Rebus to do once I have time. You don't really have to wait for me, but I think I'll be on before NameIess and should still allow Malevolence or Cricket (or Bat and Rose, maybe) the actual finishing move.

    Bacon is apparently allergic to responsibility, so your explainy orb might be a decent second choice. Is Rose still there? Because *lasers* You’re probably right. You need to be prepared ahead of time to fight an Ennuller. Yup. If I was made of magic I’d get out of there. Rebus’s soul is almost gone from the body there; Rebel has more power than he does, though of course Rebel would get shredded by an Ennuller without access to Abstract.

    Rebus still has Exposition… Cricket, Malan, Malevolence, and Rebus (and maybe the rabbit?) are fighting for their lives, and this is what Tam is doing?

    Alvar reinforces his ice knife, turning it to a bladed collar with a handle. “The other adventurers? All I’ve done is realize capturing you is better than working for or killing you.”

    Rebus grits his teeth as Ennulling power crashes into him. His soul compacts, his awareness tightens, and pain washes over him. Then it stops. His face goes from a grimace to a smirk as sleek black and white armor crystallizes around him. Cracks of thunder ring out as he teleports utility fog around him, not bothering to move the air out of the way. More crackles ring out as he walks through the portal, arcs of electricity leaping towards his feet and the hem of his long coat.

    "I suppose not. Here, have a box." Rebus hand Bat a small box. "I don't know; if I told you it wouldn't be vague." Rebel notices, but doesn't particularly care. Rebus blinks, wondering if he should have thought the rabbit plan through. "I will give you something more, but first you must do something for me. Otherwise you will eat and eat until there is nothing left." Then his Author goes to sleep, freezing him - and hopefully the rabbit - in time.

    "Then either they want to keep you, or they'll thank me for killing you. Or they descend into chaos, and if I can get away I can still collect a bounty for collapsing your group."

    "We should wait, I think. They might actually kill each other." "Good. Can you travel there another way, or at least fake doing so? If we reveal our cards Malevolence counters them. In fact, can you three each give me a vague asset? Know what it is but hide it and don't think about it as you give it to me. I'll do the same." Rebel nods, lying down to rest as nanomachines plate his cave with gold. His clothes, too, are woven with gold, the lights turning a bright yellow.

    No idea; woods is all I get. But Ruia is there, and my networking may pay off yet. Rebel nods. "I'll find power for you, defeat and siphon from Rebus, and we'll do great things. Right now, though, I need to stay alive. Thus, I need to either reach Onyx's Realm or find Nullite."

    "It's hazy; I don't know how to get there. Actually, I can get us there, but we should wait. It seems like the two are fighting." "Electricity? Does it work?" Rebel paces. "Can you protect me from Rebus; absorb his Narration?" It'd be funny if Rebel coincidentally enacted Rebus's decoy plan. But there is no time or justification. Huh. I wonder what we can do with the other piece, then. Sadly I'm busy until like next Monday, especially considering how fast this is moving. "I will not be much help; I am still out of sync with time." Rebus frowns. "This truly was terrible timing."

    Rebus shakes his head. “Later, perhaps. We have bigger problems.” Rebus sighs. “Of course not. I believe Malan will do the same thing I did with the robot Ennuller, except with more direction and control. Do you have enough of a link to contaminate the Narration with ash?” Rebel smiles. “I do like wonders… What sort of power do we need?”

    @NameIess, props for that. An excellently done twist; everyone knew it was coming, and yet we were surprised anyway. Malevolence is an excellent magnificent bastard (you’re the one who also does TVTroupes, right?).

    “That is a pretty good way of putting it, for those who don’t want to hear the theology and metaphysics. Relatedly, I’d thought I was here with you, so I was.” Rebel has only a small bit of Narrative power. It was linked to Rebus; trying to get more would only work once before he was stopped and maybe written out of existence. But a little Narration might go a long way… Rebel spends all but the power needed to bootstrap himself to more, creating a well of potential he could draw from. He mounts it on the scepter itself, yellow light pulsing. I’ve simply had a long day. Directed, elegant annoyance was my intended goal; to help you get out your frustration in a more satisfying and impressive manner. Rebus tilts his head to the side, shrugging as if to say ‘well played’. “We should have expected that, perhaps. No explained plan goes well. Hence, I had unexplained plans. Tam, when you copied your clothes, do you get my beacon?“

    Rebus passes Rose a wand. “Tam wanted me to give this to you, to apologize. It controls those ink things.” Unfortunately for Rose, the want does exactly the opposite of what you expect the ink constructs to do. If she doesn’t think it will work, it will. If she thinks it will work, it won’t. If she thinks it will make an ink bird fly forward, it’ll fly backwards. Really, I’m no fun? I’m so much better at passive aggression, Tam.

    He shrugs. You could bring up your actual issue, or you could create more sophisticated annoyances. Simply Narrating conspicuously and repeatedly could serve as a better annoyance, and is more easily denied than creating creatures to attack her.

    Well, what are you actually mad about? Sophisticated mayhem is more entertaining than petty mayhem, which implies you’re mad at Rose specifically. Having a bird peck her eyes out won’t fix your problems; she’ll be even more antagonistic towards Narrators if you do that.

    Rebus nods, satisfied. If you want to mess with someone, make it fair, or at least ensure that you don’t remove the eyes of an unNarratable ally. Petty minor injury is to be avoided; you should mess with people in more sophisticated ways. Tricking someone into doing something ultimately pointless, for instance. If you could fool Rose into getting stuck just outside the gravity area, for instance, it shows more tact than conjuring creatures to harass her.
