I don't like the idea of reforging the Oathpact, I think this is a dead end simply because it was tried once before and it failed spectacularly. The Oathpact is bound to end in a disaster. Making 10 people suffer through endless torture isn't any solution, it's just a delaying tactic which will bakfire one day. And now when Fused know that they just need to capture Heralds in gemstones to eliminate the Oathpact entirely, there is no reason to even try reforging the Oathpact. Sooner than later Heralds will break again, this will start another Desolation, Fused will capture Heralds and Kaladin in gemstones and then what's next? Making another Oathpact and sacrificing another 10 people? Oathpact is useless now, they need a new solution, a permanent solution - something that Rayse has agreed to.

And why would you want Kaladin, who already struggles immensely with his own depression, to be tortured for an eternity on Braize? That's just cruel. I don't want him to be a Herald. Kaladin isn't just about protecting people, he did an unhealthy amount of protecting, sacrificing himself for others. He needs to learn to protect himself as well, how to live for himself and those around him. Leaving the army was a step in the right direction and he didn't do this to protect others - he did it for himself.

    Whoops…:)

So I was thinking... someone has to die in book 5. It's basically a certainty at this point. So who would be the most devastating loss to the coalition?

I've got two groups of people in mind. First, there's Dalinar. King of Urithiru, basically the leader of the KR, most powerful oathed Radiant, bonded to the Stormfather, and Unity, whatever that means. His death is the one I've seen floated about as the most devastating one to the new radiants.

I don't think it would be, though. First, we have Navani as a new Bondsmith, Queen of Urithiru, and another very powerful KR. And having Dalinar as a Fused, while it would be cool, wouldn't be the most devastating loss. Dalinar basically spent the entirety of book 4 ensuring that his death wouldn't cause the amount of damage it would have at the end of, say, OB.

So if not Dalinar, then who would be the most devastating loss for our heroes? I posit that the deaths of Renarin and Rlain would be the worst and most impactful deaths for the coalition. And Taravangian knows this. The only reason that Rayse couldn't use futuresight is because of these two. They're only being unpredictable because Odium doesn't know what they'll do.

So I posit that in wind and truth, TOdium will either attempt and fail or attempt and succeed to assassinate both Renarin Kholin and Rlain. This is Odium's only weakness in his planning- the fact that those close to those two are unpredictable. A predictable enemy is the easiest to defeat, after all.

    Thoughts?

Adolin! I posed my theory somewhere lol

Thank you for the intro post, please consider mentioning if there are any books you have not yet read, so we can avoid spoilers, if necessary. Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for tips and tricks, like avoiding a double-post through use of Multi-quote and other techniques like searching WoBs on the Arcanum.

Interesting theory, but Hoid was one of the people that Splintered Adonalsium, he just didn't take up a Shard (he was a different kind of Vessel at one point). WoBs:

      Hide contents

When we eventually get to the Dragonsteel series (likely after Stormlight Archive 10) we will get back to Hoid's origin story. Dragonsteel Prime is available now - but it is no longer Canon.

    Hope that helps

    Ive read all his books.

The fact that hoid was there by the shattering doesn’t mean hes not adolnasium- lets assume adolnasium knew of there plans and then created hoid to be part of them at his shattering, acting as a deep agent.

  4. Ok totally random thought and probably spoken about before but i personally think that Hoid is really like an avatar/ cognitive shadow, or whatever you wanna call it- but hes really adolnasium.

hes the defense fallback that adolnasium created in case he gets splintered, and he integrated with everyone knowing they would shatter his actual self but needing to be a part of it so he can fix the inevitable outcome.

thats why he goes from world to world, I king up little pieces of power from each one in the hopes of reuniting them all.

    all thoughts appreciated

  5. Ok so random thought just wanna put it out and hear your thoughts…

so i mentioned in another post that i believe adolin will die in stormlight 5 by giving his life essence to maya and making her back alive- as we see he already gave her some of his…. Life essence or whatever you wanna call it- read the part where theyre all in shadesmare carefully and you’ll see what i mean…

this will leave maya alive but to who should she bond?!?!

aux had the opposite here where he gave up his life essence to save the one who bonded him so it’ll be super super cool if those two find their way to each other!!!

Do Szeth, Venli, Rlain, or Rock count as Main in this case?

(Personally, I dont think it's Adolin because I think his means of Restoration of her is going to be a Connection thing that he'll need to be alive to maintain, while also unlocking Cultivation's version of the Surges for one or both of them.)

Szeth hasn’t really been a main character in regards to a growth arc neither rock or rlain so their impact by dying wouldn’t be such a game changer…

As to venli i hear more but I feel she’s too important in the plot to let her die- she’s the proof that even “evil” parshendi can be good and that the “original gods” have forgiven them like leshwi said

and in regards to adolin read the part where he’s in shadesmare- it seems like he’s giving her his own strength… not sure though… read it again and try to see what i mean

  7. So being that every book has someone dying who’s it gonna be in the 5th?

its hard to explain the whole thought process, but its gotta be one of the main characters- cause that’s just what Brandon does lol… kills someone to prove the point of the book mistborn spoiler alert:

    Spoiler

    (i.e. vin)

so kaladin, dalinar, navani, renarin, adolin, shallan….

cant be kaladin cause his whole arc was about learning to live- obvious not.

dalinar- he’s becoming more of staple power in the world and it just wont fit his arc for him to die- too obvious and cliche so that’s a no!

shallan- also a no cause her arc is about living with the past and not running away from it and dying would be the ultimate hiding from her past.

renarin uh uh- he’s way too important now and essential to the plot plus we haven’t really seen his viewpoint on his personal struggles so it wouldn’t make sense to kill him.

    which leaves navani and adolin…

navani is super important to dalinar so her death would be a huge impact plus she’s bonded to the tower which is interesting in her own right so just some food for thought too explore that idea…

but adolin is a for sure death!! My theory is that he’s going to sacrifice himself to somehow Restore his Spren maya back from being a deadeyes- he’s the only one in history who has brought some sentience to his spren and he did this by giving her something from himself (go read those chapters you’ll see what i mean) and his arc is about how he doesn’t know his place… by giving up his life for maya he will find himself plus bring her to life… also notice that he’s more attached to maya than anything else- even shallan- pay attention to how he talks to her and the care he has for her…

all in all just some food for thought lemme hear what you guys think!!!!

  8. AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT REMEMBERS THIS??!!!

So ive seen many people discuss the prelude to storm light archive 5 and discussing if its the real stormfather or not-

    let me post a quote

“I am comfortable with oaths, Stormfather,” Dalinar called up to him. “As you know.”

YES. THE FIRST IN MILLENNIA TO BIND ME. Somehow, Dalinar felt the spren’s attention shifting to Navani. AND YOU. DO OATHS HOLD MEANING TO YOU?”

No need for such aggression. Such aggression and ad hominid attacks are not suitable for this forum. And while I don't mean any disrespect, I feel we haven't read the same book if you think she has the mental age of an adult. She has a few moments of more maturity, but is ultimately a child.

Her lack of mental maturity is lampshaded by the work.

She has difficulty understanding more complex morals, is obsessed with praise in a very child-like way. When she manifests her clothing has a "girlish cut". Brandon says he in various ways based on on his kid. For a while she had a very simplistic view on emotions and how to deal with depression and trauma in others, etc.

I totally agree with you and I’m sorry you had this kind of aggression on my thread :(

I agree. The worldbuilding is never too much, but always leaves the reader satisfied with what they learned. I love Brandon's books for that reason.

100% you nailed it!! Though he also gives you enough to imagine and try to build it yourself

Welcome! I think the best part about Brandon Sanderson is that if you look carefully enough, you can realize just about how much of everything was planned from the start.

Thats exactly why i say Brandon is the “GOAT” when it comes to worldbuilding!!

Do fish think they are flying?

Interesting question but i lean towards no because the only reason we know that there’s even a concept called flying is cause we see it all the time. So fish who cant see that- i say that they dont even have the concept.

so to answer your question- nope!

Couldn't it be the other way around? sacrifing himself and admitting that people can protect themselves.

Interesting point and to counter that i think that if thats so why would he need to sacrifice himself… if its all about that he isn’t needed then he can pack up and go…

plus there are always those people that society doesn’t look out for and for those he will always need to be around

How does one fly? When do your start to soar?

So to be fair I’ll answer in the only way we humans can actually fly and thats through our emotions- when due to our emotion’s we’re “flying high”

The truth is that usually what makes us “feel down” is when we get into our own heads and are too hard on ourselves about things.

When we let go and are willing to forgive and live with ourselves is when we feel like we’re “flying high”

It’s those moments when we’re happy with who we are and aren’t bothered by what others may think about us and particularly we aren’t bothered by what “WE THINK OF OURSELVES” those moments are what cause us to soar!!

First your right about the fifth not being about sacrifice. Kaladin would be willing to sacrifice him self at anytime for almost anyone and especially his men.
I agree with you about the fifth, but I would like to add a detail. That the fifth is about knowing sometime you surviving is more important and that sometimes sacrifices will need to be made for the greater good. And this is why it will be so hard for him, is because in his mind it will be to close to what Amaram and Sadeas did.

I totally agree and thats kinda the point I’m trying to make here…

that the 5th ideal is about kaladin surviving when he wants to sacrifice himself because deep down he understands that its what the people need most of him- TO SURVIVE!!
