  1. He did, and the pain and nausea erupted again, but he could handle it this time.
  2. He smiled. He was lucky to have such a good ally. Most other people would have let him die. He hated feeling so useless though.
  3. He took it and stood, then grabbed a crutch with his right hand. It helped, but he could still barely move. “Thanks,” he grunted.
  4. He drank it. “Maybe.” He took a wobbly step. Pain and nausea exploded through him, and he collapsed. “Not yet, at least not without support,” he said after he had recovered enough.
  5. Aaron grunted and struggled to his feet, wobbling slightly. “I’ll be here with you then. “You’ll be the best at this game. You will win.
  6. He looked her dead in the eye. “I am. I can make it so you win while neither killing or being killed, stepping up or being stepped on. You will see your family again. I’m the one looking out for you.”
  7. He reached out with his good arm, touching her arm. “We don’t need to worry about that right now. Focus on the games, then find your family when you’re done.”
  8. His dad laughed. “I’m glad he has someone like you, if my instinct is right.”
  9. “That’s or Daniel for you. He’s so good at helping others…you almost can’t believe that he’s dealing with his demons like the rest of us.” He smiled fondly. Daniel blushed.
  10. “Thank you for taking care of our son.”
  11. “Don’t leave, please. I’ve only seen him for a couple minutes and I can already tell Daniel’s happier with you. That alone is enough to have you stay. She just needs time to comprehend what’s happened.”
  12. She stalked away, not looking at her. Daniel’s dad smiled apologetically. “She‘ll come around, she’s just surprised and worried.”
  13. “It’s amusing,” he admitted. Daniel laughed too.
  14. He grinned. “That’s what you think, just wait until they start arguing,” he said jovially. “They really are.”
  15. “Good.” The door opened, revealing Daniel’s parents. His mom pointedly didn’t look at either of them, but his dad smiled at them.
  16. He wrapped an arm around her. “It’s going to be ok,” he whispered.
  17. He walked away to join his sisters who were giggling about something.
  18. He looked into her eyes. You are incredible. The kids already love you, you’re acting perfectly because you’re acting like yourself. Just keep doing that. Jimmy ran over and hugged her legs. “Thanks for playing!”
  19. Will be? What’s wrong?
  20. Jimmy yelled triumphantly. Daniel took her hand. Are you feeling ok?
  21. Really. He smiled widely at her, then let go as Jane threw herself at his legs, surprising him and knocking him into the lava. Jimmy started moving towards Rex.
  22. I like it too.
  23. He held her on. One person. Usually I let Jimmy win. I just can’t make it obvious, at least not to him. Sometimes Jane and Lily get the better of me though, they just keep getting stronger. He smiled fondly.
  24. Until there’s only one person left standing. He nudged Lily off her cushion, toppling her into the “lava”.
  25. He kept an arm around her, smiling. Jane and Lily both tried to tackle him at once and he wobbled, but stayed up.
