He smiled. Reluctantly, he let himself relax, and slowly drifted off.
She felt comfortable. She was with Tayen again, he made her feel safe, always. Even after… this.
“That aura, it’s like one that shades have, people who lose themselves in this place and are replaced bit by bit until they become what I call shades. They aren’t human anymore, but you still are.”
He did not. He felt bad about lying to her, but this was for her own good. He had to be there for her if she needed him, he couldn’t do that asleep.
She screamed suddenly. “No! You don’t understand! You can’t! How awful it was!” She sank to the floor, legs collapsing.
Freya entered the den of her captors. “We have our payment.”
An old man stood. “Bring it. This will buy you…a week. Bring more before then, or she dies,” he said, pointing to Freya’s sister.

Freya ran, hiding her tears from her sister. She shouldn’t have gotten attached to him, she’d known it was a mistake. And yet, he was so kind, maybe, somehow, he’d save her. But, of course he wouldn’t, he probably hated her now.
