    Marewill took her knife back from Roy. First of all, she didn’t trust him with it. Secondly, if he wanted a weapon he needed to get his own from the casino. She walked a short distance away from him and Tinker, though she positioned so that Tinker was between her and Roy. She moved almost sluggishly, as though she were moving through molasses. She sat down. She opened the box and pulled out the letter first. It was written neatly in her mother’s script. Mare, You are not a monster. You’re scared, and you made a mistake. I can tell what you’re thinking, and no, you are not like the men who killed your father. We’re doing alright here. The people are nice enough to us. Lily is even learning how to read and write. She’s very happy about that. It’s not the same without you here, I know you know that. But we’re okay. Don’t forget that. We all want you out of there, though. You shouldn’t have to go through this, especially not without your family. We all miss you, and we love you. Her mother signed her name, then Meron in blocky letters, then Lily in that large little-kid-lettering. Underneath the letter was a drawing, clearly done by Lily. A tall stick figure, a short stick figure, and a slightly taller stick figure were all hugging a medium sized stick figure. The caption was “Us hugeen Wily win she winz!” Her mother was in the middle of the photograph. She was smiling, but it didn’t reach her eyes. Meron was to the right. He was smiling nervously. Then to the left, little Lily beaming with barely a care in the world. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, then grazed her fingers over the photographed faces.
