    "No," she whispered softly. "I don't." She twisted her fingers around the Thread, bracing herself to snap it.

    She pulled her knees up to her chest and buried her face in her arms, trying not to cry even as she twirled another Thread between her fingers. This one was pink.

    "It's my job," she whispered. "I... I can't help it. I don't like it, but it's the way it is."

    "Why did you? I think that question answers itself," she murmured, dismayed. She sat dejectedly on the ground.

    "This is my tree," she reminded him out loud. "This is where I come to... to......" Be alone? But she was alone all the time. "None of them are dead," she blurted. "They all left me. They don't understand."

    "No--no, wait!" She got off her swing and searched for him frantically. "It's not like that!"

    She snapped it between her fingers. There was a scream, and the thread stopped glowing. She grinned wickedly.

    She smiled bigger, swinging her legs. That was a nice sound. She hyperfixated on that sound. Ba dum tss... ba dum tss.... She cocked her head slightly. "Why do you have drums?" She frowned. "Well, what's your name?"
