  1. It works. Gavin gritted his teeth, looking away. You disappoint me too, he thought, but didn’t say it. Masks were important things. Better this man who called himself Gavin’s father thought himself in control. The words stung, though. They are an echo of something he’d once heard all too often.
  2. The storm hits. @Lord Spirit @Cash67 @RoyalBeeMage @J. Magi @TheRavenHasLanded @The Bookwyrm @Spark of Hope @Wierdo @The Stormfather @The Honorable One @WhyEverNot_8 @Unintelligenius @Scars of Hathsin @ΨιτιsτηεΒέsτ @Lotus Blossom @Dragonheir @LightRinger
  3. Inside the pockets he finds a pair of glittering ruby dice, an expensive looking fountain pen, and a small knife. He also seems much warmer than he should be, and stays completely dry inside the coat. Gavin glared back. “N-no,” he said in English. “I-I-I—I’m n-n-not y-yours t-to c-c-control.” Stars, he hated that stutter. It made it impossible to argue. “Th-this is m-m-m-more i-important.”
  4. LIAR Yes I did OooooOOOooo, poetic...
  5. “Not yet,” he says. “N-n-not e-enough,” Gavin mumbled. Gavin grimaced. “F-fermez-la,” he grumbled, but stood up. Can’t let them see you getting angry… She found one.
  6. It opens. Inside is a typical, if quiet, casino. Behind the counter stands a man with blacker than black hair. “Welcome,” he says, “to The Casino. How may I help you?”
  7. You can’t convince me of something that isn’t true.
  8. How do you lead from the back?

    I’ll tell you how.

You lead from the back because the whole need no physician.

You lead from the back because those hardest to love need it most.

You lead from the back because leading is different than winning.

And that’s just it, isn’t it?

    The winners get the glory.

    The victors get the admiration.

    The champions get their love.

    And the leaders?

    We ride at the back.

We work and we fight and we fail.

    But we love.

We love and we never stop trying.

Because the proud victors aren’t the ones who need your strength.

The ones who cross the finish line first don’t need you to help them finish their last race.

An example is no replacement for a friend.

You lead from the back because the back is where you’ll find those who need to be led.

And they don’t need a winner.

    They need a leader.

    Biking season is starting again…

It’s scudding exhausting, caring about everyone. Working and working and never winning. Always being JVB (which isn’t as good as it sounds. That’s where they put all high school girls who don’t make JVA or varsity).  Seeing them look at some of the rudest people I’ve ever met like they can’t wait to become them, and knowing that no matter what you do they’ll never look at you like that.

If you’re the best at something, don’t forget us little people, okay? Don’t forget the ones at the back. You’d be amazing what a difference it could make, having a champion who cares. They need you.

I’ll be okay, I’m just so tired of some people…

Stars, and it’s scudding annoying to always be at the back. But it’s ok.

  9. WAIT SERIOUSLY I’ve never met or heard of a sharder who’s shorter than me please please this could be a big moment how tall are you?
  10. “No sand right now,” Corin murmurs. “But I can get you food and weapons, depending on what you’ll give me in return.” @Cash67 @RoyalBeeMage @Spark of Hope @Wierdo @Lotus Blossom
  11. HEY THATS COMPLETELY INACCURATE AND YOU KNOW IT
  12. IMAGINE LIVING IN UTAH KNOWING BRANDON SANDERSON’S SISTER IN LAW AND STILL NOT GETTING TICKETS IMAGINE THAT, @RoyalBeeMage!!! um anyway I’m trying to work or volunteer for it, but I haven’t heard back on that and haven’t been able to get tickets, so… *sighs* I’ll let you know if that changes. Otherwise, I’d love to. Meeting shaders is so fun (even if you’re all taller than me)
  13. @LightRinger Gavin looks away from the screen, blinking as he remembers where he is. “W-what? O-o-oh. I-I w-w-was l-looking a-a-a-at th-the t-t-t-tributes. D-d-d-don’t w-want t-t-to m-miss a-anything.” He turns back to the screen, watching with a strange infatuation. Something in him knows he should hide it, but he can’t. Beautiful… This time it opens. Inside yada yada same description I’ve given like six times, man with blacker than black hair standing behind the counter. “Welcome,” he says, “to The Casino. How may I help you?”
  14. …I already took it so uh pretty pretty please? …so actually no (don’t listen to @Ancient Elantrian and @Immortal Platypus and literally anyone else on the shard) but it’s usually funny and I’d rather be funny than proud. So uh mAyBe? Also welcome to the shard! I don’t think we’ve met?
  15. He hands her a small backpack containing everything but the metal mind.
  16. All the doors are locked. Corin scowls at him. “Don’t interrupt my business!” He turns back to Marewill. “I can do the rest, and I can promise you a metalmind.” He grinned. “And if you break your promise, I can assure you there will be a great deal of pain waiting for you.”
  17. It’s locked.
  18. The foliage is too dense to make anything out. He can see jungle in every direction, nearly as far as the eye can see. The only clearing is in the center, around the casino. He sees the signs of large animals in several directions. In one case he can even see a shelled creature that’s taller than some trees.
  19. Unfortunately, it’s regular sand. After some time, he hears a loud hissing from behind him.
  20. NO TOUCHY- oh oh right may I pretty please borrow your dragon?
