    Eddie smiled back. “I’m sorry,” she said again. “I’m so…thank you for being here anyway.”

    “As you command, Mother,” Zira said sulkily. Someday…I will not bow. Not to her and not to anyone. Siylna is still in me, I am still in me, and I am above this creature. She will suffer.

    “Oh really?” Zira frowned, looking thoughtful. “Would you like me to remove him? I’m rather hungry…”

    "How was the human? Medea scared him silly."

    Zira turned. As soon as she saw Emma, her face lit up in a smile. "Mother."

    "Hush, spirit," Zira murmured absently, strolling briskly toward the control room.

    Zira laughed. "You're so young, little snake...fine then. Stay on your leash. Stay down. Stay afraid." She skipped forward nimbly, patting Medea on the head and then, as always faster than a human eye could follow, strolling out the door. "Good dog."

    Zira raised an eyebrow. "Do I, now...did you ever see them together? Did you ever wonder how silly little Emma learned how to make creatures like us?"

    Zira yawned. "Everything she knows, she learned from Eddie...and I was friends with that old witch too. Better friends than she was."

    *also hugs* "Hold on, Hold on to someone standing by. Hold on. Don't even ask how long or why! Child, hold on to what you know is true, Hold on 'til you get through. Child, oh child! Hold on!" That's from a song. Hold on. It won't always hurt as bad as it does right now.

    Zira raises an eyebrow. "And if she were to...be removed?"

    Eddie hesitated, then shook her head. "Can we...go to her? I think it might be easier that way. Less scary for her."

    Yeah. And that's okay. You can take all the time you need, and we'll all be here to care whichever way you go.

    Zira laughed. "I only wish she'd killed you back when she realized what a failed attempt you were."

    "I just don't want to hurt her," Eddie whispered. "She was my best friend for so many years...but I think she'd rather know the truth. Don't...don't you?"
