  1. Tal shrugs. Slowly, his face starts to look less afraid and more cool, more…calculating.
  2. The woman holds him close. “Oh, my boy…my poor boy…it’s such a dark world. This is why our work is so important.”
  3. Tal writes an unfamiliar character. He looks at it, then blinks. I haven’t seen that language in years…what are you doing to me? It’s a reminder. You don’t get to forget who you are. Who I am, or who you are? Who we are. Under the character, Tal writes “no”.
  4. “They ate him,” she said coolly. “Bit by bit by bit, keeping him alive so they wouldn’t need to store the meat.”
  5. She laughs. “It’s okay, my boy. You’re so young, I forget sometimes…in the war, they attacked your father and his parents. Your father was only a few years older than you are now…he hid, and they were so stupid that they didn’t find him. Which is wonderful, mind you, a blessing. But your grandfather…” she looks down. “If only they’d just killed him.”
  6. Tal shook his head. He opened his mouth, and then his eyes widened and he snapped it shut, shaking his head vigorously.
  7. She flips a page. “There was a terrible, terrible war.” Crudely drawn stick figures attack beautiful drawings. “Many people were killed.” She looks up from the book. “And you know all about what happened to your granddaddy.”
  8. Tal looked more afraid than they’d ever seen him, but wasn’t saying anything.
  9. “They have taken our rest,” the girl hissed. “You have taken our rest.” She strokes his hair, though her hands are cool and slick as ice. Opening the book, there’s a picture of many small cartoon people holding swords. “Once upon a time, the districts attacked us,” she reads.
  10. You're all fishes. It has nothing to do with if you accept it.
  11. She giggled louder. "It's too late for that," she murmured, floating through the bars and out of the cell. "We're already dead."
  12. The woman sighs, wiping her hands on her apron and pulling a picture book off a shelf. "Come here, dearest." The man nods, sneering at the cell closest to Sharpo. "All the vermin live together here, but we should have been more prepared for your coming."
  13. “Have you forgotten what they’ve done to us?” The man looks confused, and they (though they are also faintly blue and transparent) go right through it. The girl giggles louder.
  14. “You don’t-want to-“ Tal said desperately. Then he sneered. “You can’t help anyway. You’re useless, pathetic, and naive.” He shook his head rapidly.
  15. Her gaze freezes. “What did you say?”
  16. “Your father is working. Now, eat up. Not everyone has food.”
  17. “Of course,” the man said slyly. “Study them all you like, inspector.”
  18. People won’t die ~_~ They’re cool ghosts!!
  19. Tal gave him a cold stare. “Are you giving me orders?” Calm down calm down calm-who needs to be calm? Anger is so much more fun, so much tastier…
  20. “I’m not trying to be a hero,” Tal growled. I’ve already made that mistake. The voice in his mind cackled.
  21. Tal gritted his teeth. “It’s not that simple,” Tal snapped. Again. “And I’m not going to make someone else suffer through this.” Again. They do not know us… There is no us. Leave! But I’m so hungry…and I know you are too…
  22. He shook his head slowly, standing up. “You need to…get away from me.”
  23. After a few minutes, Tal sat up, looking terrified. I wouldn't do that again if I were you...could be dangerous... "Hi," he murmured, blinking groggily.
