  1. "I love you, my dearest." Then the light was gone. Lerac blinked, confused.
  2. Lerac shuddered, and a faint blue glow appeared in his eyes. "They're beautiful tonight. I wish you could see them." Lerac spoke, except it wasn't his voice. It was her fiancé's.
  3. Lerac said nothing. He stared forward, still. He had stopped breathing again.
  4. "He started being more harsh on his soldiers and servants because he could make me heal them afterward from the brink of death so he could have no consequences. He had other healers, but made me do it all to teach me a lesson about disobedience. I ended up deathly ill from the fatigue of using my magic, which hadn't happened to anyone since the possibility was first discovered, like two hundred years ago."
  5. "When my mother left him for what he did, he exiled her to a different country and told me she was dead."
  6. "Mine tended to take me to warzones. During and after the fighting."
  7. "Mine made me execute a criminal when I was twelve."
  8. "My father locked me up for a week because I healed a servant that he had beaten."
  9. "Ah." He paused. "Mine almost killed me a few times as a kid. Especially the growth one. I didn't know how to use it or control it, and it was always strong. Nearly choked myself to death with vines as a baby, twice."
  10. "You also got lucky with your magic, right?"
  11. "Sort of. My home has two types of life magic, healing and growth. Most people don't have either, and almost no one has both."
  12. "I was a healer." Lerac tried to stop fidgeting and breathe normally. It was an effort.
  13. Lerac struggled with everything he was holding back. Guess I won't be getting a chance to release it too soon.
  14. "Anything to do with the dizziness?"
