  1. "Wynn made a deal with Death. I got to return while we hunted a god that was being a problem. He didn't have an avatar at the time, so it was even more difficult for him to get involved in that sort of thing. After Malum died during the battle with Kaos, Death was ready to reclaim me, but decided that he would offer me the work instead of having me die completely. So he gave me the dagger, and I died in battle. It was kind of one death, at two different times."
  2. "I find that the best option is to remember that there are many things you can't see, and that doesn't make them not exist." He paused. "I heard similar things, from my father, mostly. The first time I died it was because I sacrificed myself to save someone else. Not heroically, just because I thought I was worth less."
  3. "All life has potential value in its many possible futures. It is wholly impossible to be aware of your own value at any one point in time."
  4. "That's good. There's no point in letting entropy take you away early. It will do that with time, regardless."
  5. "But you've just gone through so much."
  6. "He showed me some of that. A while ago. But I felt it." He shook his head. "I can't explain it more than that."
  7. He looked pained. "Remember what I said about Death grieving for everyone because only he can?"
  8. "You should focus on the things you're dealing with. You don't need anything else to add to that pile. I'm certainly not helping with it."
  9. He looked down. "I really can't explain this to you. Even if I could, I wouldn't. It's too much. Far too much."
  10. He cringed as it all flooded back, and tears returned. "I... I can't. You already have too much happening. I can deal with it on my own." He said the words with the conviction of a trained answer.
  11. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do... any of that." He wiped the tears out of his eyes.
  12. Lerac felt his emotions get Soothed away. "Thanks... Are you okay?"
  13. After a long moment, it abruptly cut off. Lerac crumpled, tears streaming from his eyes again.
  14. Lerac went visibly tense. "Aventine, you should go, I-" He inhaled sharply. Aventine felt the wave of his strange aura again, much stronger this time. It felt like the warmth she felt when he healed her and the cold she had felt from the dagger, both at once, clashing, disorienting, nauseating.
  15. Lerac didn't know what to say, so he didn't say anything. He felt tension rising in him again.
  16. He nodded. "I'm sorry. I was... overwhelmed. I don't really know what happened."
  17. He looked at her. "I'm not sure..."
