  1. "I guess so." He paused, looking thoughtful. "Do you think I could somehow use channeled magic to somehow get past the traps?"
  2. "Do you think that we could find that power source before trying to navigate the active traps?"
  3. "Ok. Do you think that that rune will turn back on when I go past it?"
  4. "You can heal me for a while? Like, without having to follow me?"
  5. "Yes. And painful on multiple levels. When do I go again?" He tried to stand up, yelped, and sat back down.
  6. Desperate to extinguish the flame but unable for let go of the rune circle for fear of the traps, Antin did the only other thing he could think to do. He tried channeling magic. Almost immediately, a small gust of wind was conjured, and the fire on his back was reduced, then put out. Unfortunately, it was hard for Antin to celebrate through the immense pain that resulted. As his skin took on a tanner tone, he convulsed, feeling himself nearly black out. After about a minute, it passed. "Quest?" he called weakly, eyes watered from smoke and pained tears. "Are... are you okay?"
  7. Antin yelled. The fire dulled significantly, as it came into contact with a lot of his body, but it was too much for him to fully quench. He could feel burns forming on his freshly lightened skin as he leapt past the flame and found a rune on the wall that seemed to connect the flame and a few other runes. For just a moment, Antin caught his breath. Then he realize that the back of his cloak was on fire. That's not good.
  8. "Alright. I don't know if I can keep my hand on the runes all the way through, though." Antin lept up to the area right near the doorway, placing his hand on the first rune he could. However, it took several seconds for him to get his arm on the other two circles present nearby on the wall.
  9. "Ok. Are you coming up, or should I just go for it?" Antin looked oddly excited.
  10. Antin started tracing lines, trying to find where they connected. "I think it's... this one. It's got four connected to it." Antin placed his hand on the rune.
  11. "This one has the same runes as the fireplace, but without the 'container' rune. So just... fire? And this one over here has to do with opening and closing, but I think the other ones on that circle are new."
  12. Antin laughed. "For sure." He ran up the stairs and began examining the runes on the walls.
  13. "Looks like there's another wing to this house down that hallway on the second floor... That could be interesting."
  14. "I think I have a couple runes. This one is associated with light, this one with containers or something like that. So that makes the fireplace literally 'light container.' And there's one other rune there that I haven't gotten."
  15. "Ah. Let me see..." Antin stood completely still for about a minute. Suddenly, a small puff of green flame appeared in his hand. He yelped, convulsing and falling to the floor. He breathed heavily on the ground, colors now almost entirely normal. "Owwwww."
  16. "What do you mean? What could I do to 'try' to control it?" Antin put his hand to a rune again, turning it off. For a few moments, he stood, concentrating. Then he pulled his hand away. Nothing happened. "How do you 'try' to do your magic, Quest?"
  17. "I don't know. I have pretty much no control over my ability, even normally. It just happens. It's reactive. I didn't at all mean to release anything just then. I think it just makes me a hazard."
  18. "No... I mean, the white skin and black eyes and such go away naturally if I go without interacting with magic. But I've never produced magic that didn't just counter other magic. Then again, I've never tried dampening so many objects in quick succession." Gingerly, Antin tried touching another rune. Just as normal, it deactivated upon contact. He removed his hand, and nothing happened, expect for a nearly imperceptible shift in his skin and hair color. "Well, it didn't break anything. I guess we can get back to work."
  19. Antin looked down at his hands, and started. "What the... That usually takes months! There was just a huge burst of green fire. Did I do that? I don't think I can do that."
  20. "So if I'm right, these runes should be for the skylight." Antin placed his hand on the circle, and the circle in the roof that kept daylight apparently streaming into the room all through the night blacked out. "Yes!" In the darkness, the faintest of glows was visible coming off of his skin, which was newly refreshed from testing. He laughed happily, taking his hand off of the rune. For just a moment after he did so, a massive burst of green flame erupted from his hand. "Woah!" A wave of intense heat rolled across the room. Antin was unscathed, but immediately seemed different. While still unusually light, his skin had taken on the tone of normal skin. His hair was very dark, but no longer had the void-like quality to it. As he turned, eyes wide from shock, Quest could see that his eyes had whites in them, with near-black irises. He looked remarkably normal, like an average young human adult replacing the strange being that previously had occupied his space.
  21. A few minutes later, Antin walked up and sat down next to Quest, cloak splaying out on the ground. The contrast of his skin had subdued somewhat. "I'm sorry. That was stupid of me. I just have trouble with these things... I have fears, some more concrete than others. Trying to make friends is one of those fears. It always seems to go wrong somehow, and it's usually my fault. That's why I'm always bouncing between groups and places. Just... I hope you didn't think you did something wrong. Because you didn't."
