  1. "Do you have any ideas for a faster way?"
  2. "Well, if we go for long enough we should run out of hallways, right?"
  3. "So, he acted like he was me?" TAAron shivered. "I think we should get going now."
  4. TAAron turned to him, aghast, "What? What did I do?"
  5. Antin nodded. He slid across the wall, dimming the upcoming few runes. "Follow me, then."
  6. "Yeah, I guess so. So how about this hallway then? Do I just go in and cover as many runes as I can?"
  7. "Yes," he said flatly. "Parents. I haven't seen them in years."
  8. "Alright." He approached a set near the entrance to the hallway. "One over here shoots out fire, or at least it did." As he approached, he put his hand on the runes he passed, which dimmed immediately. He got to the hole in the wall that used to contain a fire rune. Slowly, he lifted his hand off of the rune next to it in the network. Nothing happened. "Good, I think it got used up. We can move forward, but I don't know how well I'll be able to cover all of the runes. It seems like they are all linked together somehow, but I'm definitely not turning off all the runes in this building just by touching one." His former, stranger appearance had returned already as he interacted with the runes.
  9. "You think that? There have been stretches of years before where I intentionally avoided interacting with magic, and it never bothered me."
  10. "You don't seem okay. Please, tell me what's wrong." He took her hand again, clearly worried.
  11. "Here, watch." Antin opened his palm face-up, and a small lick of magical flame appeared there. He quickly put it out, grunting in pain. "It's not very pleasant." The intense contrast formerly present in his appearance became more subtle, his skin becoming a softer papery color instead of the nearly glowing appearance it had had earlier. His hair also showed more natural variation into dark grays instead of pure pitch black. "Normally, it would take months for my natural look to come back. With this, I can do it pretty much instantly, although not without it seriously hurting."
  12. TAAron, SNAP OUT OF IT! The words were accompanied by an earsplitting ringing noise, as though a small explosion had just gone off in the small hallway. "... say that?" The hateful expression vanished from TAAron's face, replaced by one of concern. "I'm not angry at you, Haly. Is something wrong?"
  13. "I don't know. When it all exploded out of me, months worth of energy all came out in a flash. But, it wasn't nearly as much as it should of been if I was actually absorbing all of the magic that I dampen. Just a medium-sized fireball once I removed my rand from the rune I was affecting at the time."
  14. "I don't really know. Quest and I did discover some interesting stuff about it, though. For one, the more I use my magic the more energy seems to build up in me, and then it all bursts out of me at once if I go too far, making me go back to looking normal. I can also channel that energy to do magic stuff, but I don't really know how and it knocked me unconscious when I tried to do anything much."
  15. A flash of surprise passed over his face. "What? Why would you..." The stiff tone and dark expression returned. "You don't need to know that."
  16. It could be. But I don't know what to do about it.
  17. The problem is with his soul actually. It's like there's something else there. An odd connection.
  18. Suddenly, TAAron's posture stiffened. He released her hand and stood away from her. He looked at her, eyes taking on an unfamiliar expression. "I'm sorry, Haly. I didn't really mean it when I said... what I said. I just didn't want to hurt your feelings in the moment." His tone was completely sterile.
  19. "Please, don't work yourself up over this. There's nothing we can do about it except keep moving." He stood up on slightly shaky legs, still gripping her hand tightly.
  20. Antin waited for him at the top. "So, there's a hallway up here rigged with a lot of traps. I assume I should go ahead, since I'll be less likely to get killed by them instantly?"
  21. Lerac, on the other hand, looked relatively serious. TAAron coughed weakly, clutching Haly's hand. "Wasn't... planning on it." Slowly, gingerly, he pushed himself up to a seated position. "That's going to be a problem, isn't it?"
