  1. "Then why...?" He was avoiding eye contact with her now, apparently uncomfortable with the situation.
  2. "Why did you tie me up in the first place? Did I attack you or something?"
  3. TAAron looked at her worriedly, but apparently chose not to pursue it further. "So, what am I supposed to do when I'm bound up?"
  4. "No, there is something. I can feel it, remember?"
  5. "Then why are you still acting weird? Is something else wrong?"
  6. What? Is something weird going on? TAAron looked conflicted. "There has to be some way I can prove to you..."
  7. "I'm not! Why would you think that?" He looked hurt. "How do I convince you?"
  8. "Well, he's a liar. Don't listen to him. I..." He blinked, tears forming to his eyes. In a near-whisper, he continued. "I love you, Haly. Just know that."
  9. "Right? What's right about that?"
  10. TAAron paled. "Did... did you believe him?"
  11. "I... so what all did he say?"
  12. "Malum isn't controlling me at all! He couldn't be. I remember it every time."
  13. TAAron looked relieved, and confused. "What? Why would I say that?"
  14. TAAron stopped struggling, breathing hard and fast. He looked up at the group, expression tinged with betrayal.
  15. He laughed. Then, his eyes changed from frighteningly gleeful to shocked and confused. TAAron squirmed in his bindings, giving a muffled cry. Lerac shook his head solemnly. "He did say that he couldn't attack you, didn't he?"
  16. "I agree with your sister. One ought not to give up on their goals." His smile turned menacing in a way that was very unusual to see on TAAron's face. "He probably is right. I have a pretty decent grip on your friend here. I've had him since... well, since our little conversation before entering the tower."
  17. "Well, his life arguably had more value than yours does. Not that I cared about the man, but it is something for you to consider. And to answer your earlier question, no. I don't think I will be leaving you alone."
  18. "There were several other options. Let me kill you. Let me take TAAron. Instead, you kill a man. For what? A delay?"
  19. "Not at all." TAAron's face took on a mockingly mournful expression. "Beloved husband and father of two. Poor man. But alas, these things happen."
  20. "You kept him alive. I try my best not to let that happen. You make it easy for me it when you annihilated the other one."
  21. "Oh, it's not like that. Believe me, if I could attack you now, I would. I saw what you did with that life magician, by the way. It was rather impressive." His voice was calm, but not relaxed.
  22. TAAron/Malum smiled wickedly. "Ah, you got me. So, how goes it with the healing of souls and such?"
  23. Carefully, Antin reached for the handle, then threw the door open and stepped back.
