  1. "But what is the actual result? Can any of these people be truly free, truly happy, without autonomy? What's the meaning in it all if no one has any choice in the matter?" TAAron took another step.
  2. "I don't know. If it were that simple, the solution would already be known."
  3. "This is not the way to achieve it." TAAron took a step closer. Blood was dripping from his hand.
  4. "This isn't peace. You must know that. You must feel their fear and pain when you conquer."
  5. TAAron broke the connection. To him it was jarring, losing a mind with such a vast capacity. He quickly picked up that central hexagon from the briefcase. Its edges cut his hands, but he managed to keep it from disconnecting him from everything like it had before. He took a step toward the Queen, not sure if she had managed to glean the metal shard's purpose and his intentions while their minds had been connected. "You were lying. And... you need me. To accomplish your goals. What has been going wrong?"
  6. By having this connection, TAAron seemed to borrow her capacity for expanded understanding, allowing him to have an impression of her hive the way she experienced it. He tried to focus in on that feeling of desperation, too, hoping to be fast so too many of his own thoughts weren't given away.
  7. She felt a pressure against her mind.
  8. "I can connect my mind to people. Would you let me do that? Read you, for a moment? It's not something I can do without permission, as far as I can tell."
  9. He took a deep breath. "Fine. Fine. Can I... try to understand better?"
  10. "You have every reason to lie. You want me to cooperate."
  11. " "You're lying." TAAron felt inexplicably certain about that, but he couldn't keep a quaver out of his voice.
  12. "It's... A lot. But whatever point you're trying to make, it isn't received."
  13. As TAAron sat there, he felt something begin to change. The onslaught, which moments before had been crippling, lessened. Not because he had any less awareness, but his mind seemed to shift, expanding. The experiences of trillions were kept tenuously separate from his operating mind. It was still brutally overwhelming, but not debilitating. He sat up and met the Queen's eyes.
  14. TAAron immediately crumpled under the feeling of it all. It was so intense that even Haly felt an unimaginable onslaught of uncountable emotions before he desperately cut his connection to her. @Halcyon The Only
  15. "I don't know who those people are. But you're wrong, anyway. People are absolutely capable without that kind of influence. I'm not going to be a part of this."
  16. "And you plan to do that with absolute control?"
  17. TAAron shook his head. "I have a chance at a life. A real one, of my own. Why would I give that up to be one of your... trillions?" He had a vague sense of how many connections she had, though it was too many to really understand.
