  1. She felt another shock of pain. "Look at him. He won't care. And it's really hardly anything, compared to... what he's been through."
  2. He just smiled, and she felt another imposed rush of warmth. "Lovely. Now, cut your friend's arm."
  3. "But indirectly, you ensure further pain for yourself."
  4. She felt another shock of pain. "You are, in fact, hurting yourself by not doing what I ask."
  5. She felt a crippling shock of pain. "Yes."
  6. Once again, she felt an odd rush of warmth. Carab reached into the box, and removed a small blade. He handed it to her. "Cut your cheek, please."
  7. "She is one of my servants. Bring those over here, if you will."
  8. Again, she felt the rush of warmth. "Very good."
  9. She felt a pleasant rush of warmth then, momentarily overcoming her anger and hatred and replacing it with a sense of joy and satisfaction. "Would you please open the door?" Carab asked to Helda.
  10. "Let us begin, then. Please walk to the other side of the room, and back."
  11. "I cannot promise the tests will be completely safe, but I will not be doing the same to you that I did to him. I'd rather not lose a second person with such high magical capacitance."
  12. "Alright. In the meantime, I have some more tests for you. You were here for an initial purpose, before we got... derailed."
  13. He eyed her, but made no comment on her statement. "Well, we could simply observe him for a while, or perhaps try to gauge his reaction to various stimuli."
  14. She had no success in slapping him. "Yes... I could not have predicted the results, though. Especially his sudden resurrection. That puzzles me..."
  15. "Well, all I knew was that a higher magical capacity leads to a more violent resistance when that limit is reached. So when he finally began to experience pain, I simply pushed it further to see how far it could go. This was quite unplanned."
  16. The man hardly seemed to register them as he looked around the room.
  17. Carab shrugged. "Very well. Now, where do you suggest we begin?"
  18. There was no response to that question. Only the strange foreignness of the room around her, and the slight chill of an outside breeze from a window.
  19. "We'll see! Some tests, plenty of observation."
  20. "Oh, don't be so glum. There's always a chance he'll improve, and you get to do some interesting work while you're at it!"
  21. "NO!" TAAron's cry was pained and desperate as he was issued through the gateway. "Rue-" It was too late. The gateway closed, and he collapsed to the ground, beginning to cry.
  22. She felt her muscles lock up again, her body becoming useless. "...No."
  23. "I don't plan on that. He's far too unique and interesting. No, he'll be an experiment, and I'll let you join me in conducting it. That way, you get to be with him. At least, whatever's left of him."
