Insa smiled as she placed it in her ear. “Thank you Pic.”

As the pain faded away her thoughts became a lot more clear.

She watched Pic and Aventine for a moment and sudden wave of sadness and fear washed over her as she remembered Bookwyrm. She shoved it down as she turned to Ash.

”I have a rough outline of a plan. I’ll go to Ian’s parents house and talk to them to get an idea of what’s going on. Then using that information I’ll find Bookwyrm and get him out.”

    ”That won’t satisfy Saar.”

”I won’t satisfy me either. Once I know Bookwyrm’s not dead I’ll take care of the Head and Ian’s dad should be able to step in lead efforts to fix Palli after that.”

She felt so safe. He was here.. he cared for her... She'd be alright. Even if she wanted to continue to travel the worlds, she'd always have her anchor here. He'd wait for her.

    She'd come back.

Insa hesitated, “Well I’m used to working in a team. Both with people who aren’t in the immediate danger zone and those who are. I won’t deny that it would be nice and helpful to do this all with other people like physically there helping. But it’s important that you understand that it won’t be easy and will be dangerous. So if you wanted to help from a distance there would be ways for that to happen too.”

Pic smiled sadly. "Unfortunatley, the Clinic needs me here. At this point, I don't know if she'd let me leave," he muttered, glancing at the ceiling with affectionate annoyance.

    “So you’ll go with me?”

Insa nodded and began to sing a lullaby in a different language.

Ash seemed to recognize it and smiled as she listened.

Pic hummed low and softly, providing a wordless backing to the melody Insa provided. Hearing Insa's heartbeat, he slowed the tempo of the song until it matched her resting heartbeat. His voice layered over the melody and over itself until the sound thrummed through the room like an ocean wave. Peace filled the area as Pic weaved his staves through the amp, causing it to quietly echo the song until it shrunk to the size of an earbud. Picking the amp up, he handed it to Insa.

"Place this in your ear, and as long as it plays, it will keep you feeling ok. It has enough power to last about four days."

She hesitated for a moment before moving to hug him. If she was going to leave again, she needed to.

Pic held her as he wove his symphony, sighing deeply as peace washed over him. You've been good to us, Clinic.

“No.. it’s from Jar Man. I’ve had it for a while, I just.. rarely use it.”

    3 hours ago, InfiniteInsanity said:

Ash nodded, “Oh alright. That makes more sense than what I thought for a moment.”

“Okay. And all I need to do now is sing?”

3 hours ago, Spark of Hope said:

“Pic’s magic.. his music.. it helps. Really.”

    3 hours ago, InfiniteInsanity said:

Insa nodded, “I know. I trust him. I’m just trying to make sure what happened to Lerac doesn’t happen to him.”

Pic nodded at all of these statements, then focused on Insa. "Sing a tune that makes you feel comfortable, one that eases you." He flipped a switch on the amp.

  5. 4 hours ago, InfiniteInsanity said:

"So it just like covers the pain, right?"

Insa nodded, "That'll work. I'll wear a jacket."

Ash threw her hands in the air, "That doesn't change the fact that you still don't have a plan. Where would you go?"

    "The blacksmith shop."

"Insa, The Head knows you're alive. Do you really think he's not watching your blacksmith shop?"

“As long as the sound hits your body, the pain will be gone. The louder the music, the more numb you should become.”

1 hour ago, Spark of Hope said:

“I.. I can teleport. It just has a cooldown of two days.”

    “Well that’s new.”

  6. 2 hours ago, InfiniteInsanity said:

Insa smiled gratefully and nodded. "I could use makeup to cover it."

Ash shook her head, "If Saar decides she wants it showing, she'll make sure it shows. What even is your plan?"

Insa was quiet for a moment, "I hadn't gotten there yet."

Insa eyed the amp, "I would love that, but I'll need you to explain your plan first."

Insa smiled, "That would be appreciated."

Pic smiled, flipped a switch on the speaker, and drew his staves in the air again. "Sing with me, and you'll carry a song of respite with you wherever you are going." He motions to the amp. "This'll shrink and fit in your ear, and don't worry about bringing it back, they're disposable. The technology this place has shown me is incredible."

Insa sat down on the bed in the room they were in.

My new information can't wait much longer, dear.

    Fine. Go ahead, tell me.

I think it'll be better if I show you.

An image appeared in the air.

It was Bookwyrm. The image seemed to zoom out and show his surroundings. Insa frowned. It looked a lot like her blacksmith shop on Palli. Then the image changed, and he was near her old home. Then he was knocking on a door. Ian's door. The image faded into nothing.

Saar? Are you somehow trying to imply that Bookwyrm is on Palli?

Those are all real, I swear.

Insa cursed under her breath. How old are those?

    I'm not sure.

If you're wrong, I'll kill you myself.

    Silence.

Insa stood quickly, and the pain suddenly increased again. She glared at, well, the air, but it was intended for that stupid goddess who refused to leave her alone.

She rushed back into the other room and over to Ash.

"Bookwyrm may be on Palli, and if so, he's either dead or imprisoned in some way. I need to go find out, so I'm going back. Do you perhaps have a pain medication I could take before I leave?"

    Ash just stared at her.

Ash sighed, "And if you go and you get caught, you'll die."

"I survived it for 4 months before."

"Last time you weren't a legend, people told each other to give them hope and have a huge scar, two huge scars that give away your identity." Ash turned to a cupboard and pulled out a small bottle of ibuprofen. "Try this."

    Insa took two pills.

Oh, darling, do you really think those will help?

    Shut up.

16 hours ago, Spark of Hope said:

"She could use makeup to cover it,” she said quietly.

Pic squeezed Aventines shoulder and stood up, walking over to Insa. From his bag, he pulled out a small amp.

“I may be able to help with the pain if you are willing to wait for a few minutes,” he droned.

Insa smiled a little. "Glad you like them."

"Anything else y'all need right now?" She made sure to make brief eye contact with everyone. "That question applies to everyone."

I have new information for you!!!!

    It can wait.

    I'm not sure it can.

    It can.

The pain increased every so slightly.

    @Cash67

"I'm content as always," Pic replied. "I'll be here until I am needed elsewhere."

She didn’t answer as she slowly put the ring on her finger.

She took out the ring with her initial.

    1 hour ago, InfiniteInsanity said:

Inside lay two rings and a chain to go with each.

The same pattern was engraved in both of them

"Where I come from, all jewelry has special meaning. Often, mothers will have a ring set with each of their children. Most people believe that's what brings a mother's intuition. So it connects them. These, when worn, will connect you. If you're separated again, you'll have a more direct connection to each other and a more reliable means of communication."

    She motioned to them.

"The patterns I engraved stand for the first letter in each of your names. They can be worn like regular rings. Or," She pulled up a chain that had gotten tucked beneath her top, a ring was the only charm, "like this on a chain. This is the one I shared with my mother."

Pic's expression relaxed into a small grin at the two of them, and a look of appreciation for Aventine.

Aventine? Most likely to feel loved and supported. The simple truth is her dad didn't truly love her. My guess is that's where most of the pain comes from, that she'll never get to feel that love.

    Insa

As Insa walked, a tingling pain began in her shoulder.

Why are you going to apologize?

Because Saar. That's what you're supposed to do when you hurt someone.

Insa entered her room and changed her clothes.

She transitioned from traveling to something outwardly less practical: a long, flowing brown skirt paired with a simple long-sleeved white blouse. She twisted her hair up into a low bun. She used a special mirror to do so. As she fussed with her hair, something else caught her eye. At the base of her neck on the left side was the beginning of a scar much like the one Lerac had removed from her. It looked like it could stretch down her arm. She froze as a thought occurred to her.

You shouldn't be able to talk to me.

Oh, Insa. Your boyfriend is gone. Nothing is stopping me from doing anything.

A shudder ran through her. She didn't respond as she finished doing her hair and began to make her way back to the infirmary.

Elan stood quietly, watching the two of them. Something stirred inside him.

    She needs him. Not me.

He felt strange. An idea forming in his head. He looked at Aventine, but he didn't see her like he thought he used to.

She was so small. So fragile. She was amazing, but what he felt wasn't romantic. It wasn't like that. It was like...

He had a sister, once. In a faraway life. She reminded him of her. He cared about her. He wouldn't let her get hurt.

    She's yours. Keep her safe.

Gem stand there awkwardly, very confused.

Elan was not there with Ave

    Instead there was this dude.

    Who was this dude.

    Gem maybe knew him?

    He sighed.

She seemed calmer with him, at least a little, than she had been moments before.

    3 minutes ago, InfiniteInsanity said:

As Insa made her way down the hallway, the pain in her shoulder grew until it was almost unbearable.

    What the heck?

    You shouldn't apologize.

I'm going to whether you like it or not.

    The pain won't stop.

    I don't care.

Insa entered the room and moved to grab a chair with her left hand. She gasped as pain shot through it upon making contact with the chair. Quickly, she grabbed the chair with her other hand and moved it so she was sitting in front of Aventine.

    "I owe you an apology."

    @Spark of Hope

Pic let her lean on him, and noted all of the people around her who she had taken care of and who had taken care of her. She'll be alright. She has so many good people, and she is changing many more. Everyone else came in and sat around Aventine, growing her foundation over and over again. The stave in front of Ash spiraled into a thumbs up and then dissapated, reappearing next to Pic.

A sense of peace radiated through Pic, originating from the Clinic itself. I know, I know, he thought, smiling softly, You always take care of your own. Mild amusement was added onto the peace, followed by a quick sense of confusion as Insa enetered the room and moved in front of Aventine. Pic's eyes focused onto her. She looked intesne, and her declaration put Pic a little bit on edge.

    “M-my fath-er, he-e’s dead…”

    9 hours ago, InfiniteInsanity said:

Ash found Insa sitting outside the room in the hallway.

“What in the world were you thinking?” Her tone was harsh but her volume quiet trying to keep the conversation from reaching those in the room.

”Aventine was right.” Insa spoke quietly and with little emotion.

    ”About what.”

”She would have been safe here.”

”There’s no way we could have tied her down like that.”

“So scare him! Heavens above Insa! You didn’t have to kill him.”

”I wasn’t planning on it okay? I tried to scare him. He wouldn’t back down. If I didn’t do something he would have come back and then what? Who knows what he would have done?”

”Killing people isn’t you Insa!” They’re voices had gotten louder.

Insa’s face went slack. “You don’t know me as well as you think you do then.” And she stood up and walked off down the hallway.

”I’ll apologize,” she called over her shoulder, “to Aventine only. But I have something to take care of first.”

Ash sighed angrily and entered the room again. She went past everyone else and started moving stuff around in a cupboard.

Pics humming increased in volume as his grip tightened. His voice split into three distinct melodies, and wove a sweeping song of sadness. “Grieve well,” he hummed, giving her the tightest of hugs right before he let go. His staves swirled around her, lifting her up and placing her back on the bed. Weighted blankets and other comfortable items from his stash flew over to her bed as smiled sadly and followed Ave, sitting at the foot of her bed.

A singular line flew into the cupboard in front of Ash, and twisted itself into an elegant cursive. What does she need from me?

  12. 3 minutes ago, Spark of Hope said:

She sobbed into him, his stability almost relaxing her.

He sighed deeply while humming, and tightened his hug. Glancing up, he acknowledged Elan by taking one hand off of Ave momentarily to wave at him with a small nod.

    “I’ve missed a lot, haven’t I.”

  13. 13 minutes ago, Spark of Hope said:

Tears came to her eyes and she fell into him.

    11 minutes ago, InfiniteInsanity said:

Ash smiled softly. “If you need me push the red button. Like always.” And she left to go find Insa.

10 minutes ago, Spark of Hope said:

He held her tight, his smile deepening. Aventine could feel his humming through his chest, his magic supporting her with every note, every key change.

Ash stood up and moved to give them space giving Pic a sad smile in return.

Pic whistled a smooth tune, and his staff sped over to Aventine, supporting her when she was about to fall, nudging her when she couldn’t seem to move her feet.

”Even after these months, you still haven’t figured out how to walk a straight line,” Pic hummed, chuckling to himself.

  15. 35 minutes ago, Spark of Hope said:

She moved like she was going to swat him off, but froze.

The whistle of a familiar tune was heard from down the hall. Familiar lines of light waltzed into the room, each carrying a cleaning set, repair kit, and spare blankets and bedding.

The source of the whistling entered the room a few seconds later. Dressed in a pair of dirty jeans and a sturdy overcoat, Pic assessed in the situation that was in front of him. His eyes narrowed and softened as he brought his tune to a close, lines of light carrying all his supplies to a corner of the room.

“I see why I was called,” he hummed, crossing his arms and offering a sad smile to the group.
