  1. She retrieved her dagger and paced down the hallway, away from Haly, who had not been listening at all.
  2. She threw up her hands in anger and retreated to the other wall. “Leave me alone.”
  3. Sykel darted forward, right up in Lerac’s face, dagger point against the wall right beside his neck. Her eyes gleamed dangerously. “I said stop.”
  4. “Yes. Yes we could be.” Sykel leaned against the wall, slipping her dagger back into her pocket, and watched casually down the corridor.
  5. “I know exactly what I told Haly,” Sykel growled. “Leave this alone.”
  6. Haly looked up from petting Shark’s ears. “I gave up on that years ago. She’s sort of cagey.” Sykel pulled out another dagger, and sharpened it, holding Lerac’s gaze. Thwock. Thwock. Thwock.
  7. “Just because you’re annoying doesn’t mean you’re right. Actually, it means the opposite.”
  8. Sykel sighed. “You’re really annoying. You know that?”
  9. She shrugged. “I don’t get why it’s necessary. I’d rather go back to my life than have to come get her for a pointless exercise.” She will flip when she finds out.
  10. Dansl nodded. “Thank you.” She drifted aside. “You are here? For what?” ”Just looking around,” Kealie mumbled, spraying crumbs everywhere.
  11. Haly sat down and picked Shark up. “Thanks, Shark. And… TAAron’s not okay right now, but he will be.” She cuddled him against her cheek. Haly looked up. “I… don’t know. What do they need me for?” Sykel’s lips tightened. “Grooming you for the throne, I bet.”
  12. Kealie licked her fingers. “Thanks. Hey Quest, do you want some or are you actually allergic to toast?”
  13. “Youngest birth kid of Basilica, blah blah, changed birth name to traditional female heir name, blah blah, left to join the Balance Keepers, upset the balances by trying to save fantasy characters, and is now being watched by the UIW.” Sykel folded her arms. “Now Basilica needs her back.”
  14. Haly handed him some marshmallows. “You could cuddle me,” she said hopefully. “That would be helpful.” Sykel glanced up at the ceiling exasperatedly. “Did you tell them nothing?” Haly shrugged. “Why would it be important?”
  15. “Oh, nothing,” Sykes replied. “Except that you’re half evil god who will cause my sister deep emotional trauma and render her unable to rule when we get back home. Why should I care?” Haly glared at her. “It’s okay, Shark,” Haly insisted. “You can be ferocious later.”
  16. Haly opened her mouth to apologize and explain, but something inside her wouldn’t let that happen. That would ruin everything, and he’d hate her. So she bit it back and swallowed the words, then cut through the ropes with Sykel’s dagger. The previous owner of said dagger sighed. “Wow, Evelyn.”
  17. “I know. I wish…” she left it hanging. She took a deep breath. “I wish I knew it was you.”
  18. “Um. Yes.” She lied. “That’s not fair to him,” Haly hissed. “I won’t be gullible this time. I’m fine.” She paused. “Thanks, though.”
  19. She swallowed. “Uh, nothing.”
  20. “Sorry. He was being a jerk.” Now she was just confused—believe TAAron wasn’t Malum, or prevent another burn? This is impossible.
  21. She’d tightened her jaw, clenching and unclenching it. “Oh, nothing,” she snapped. “Stay out of him.”
  22. She reddened with anger, Found a bowl of marshmallows, dumped them all out, and chucked the bowl at his head. “Get out of him!”
