    She smiled back, but some queasy feeling settled into her stomach. She couldn’t promise that. Worse, she didn’t deserve to promise that. She made herself look him in the face anyway, look into his eyes and confront the inevitable disappointment deep within those green depths.

    Beosta felt her blood turn cold. She reminded herself, with some great relief, that this was Shoe’s trial, not hers.
