  1. He flinched at her shouting and reached into his bag, fingers brushing the compass. He understood now, why she'd want to be alone. He lifted his head anyway. "What do you mean?" He whispered. "I don't know what you mean."
  2. "Baseball bats?" He moved over and banged on the wall. "Speak up, kid."
  3. Rutherfus Etherford thought he heard something, but his out-of-tune hearing wasn't sure. He turned back. "Eh?"
  4. Rutherfus Etherford decided to find something to fix. He sauntered away down the hallway, bored.
  5. "I'm sorry," he whispered, breath shuddering. "Whatever's good for you..........." But she wanted to BE BAIT! And Cricket WASN'T THINKING CLEARLY, and Malevolence WANTED TO KILL THEM ALL------ He shut down those thoughts and let himself cry a little harder.
  6. "Yeah, yeah, okay."
  7. "Don't bother. There's a short wire and some rats in there."
  8. Bat had nothing to say to that. Silently, he started crying into his arms. Bat bit back what could have been the most bitter thing he could have possibly said.
  9. "Yeah, yeah. Checkin' for buggers."
  10. He hesitated, then nodded without lifting his head.
  11. "I don't need help. You needed help. And I couldn't fix it." Bat ignored this. He had nothing to add.
  12. "Nothing's wrong," he said, voice muffled by his arms. "Apparently nothing's wrong in the world at all and I'm just being stupid like usual."
  13. Bat didn't move. Even if he had ideas, nobody would care. They would all be dumb ideas anyway.
  14. "YOU'RE NOT EVEN LISTENING TO YOURSELF!" Desperate tears welled up in his eyes. He wouldn't be able to make her see. He wouldn't be able to make anyone see. Nobody would listen to him. Why had he ever tried? He swallowed hard, looking away. "Forget it," he managed, plopping back down on the ground. He curled up and dropped his head onto his arms.
  15. "No! Tam, you would never do something like this!" He grabbed her shoulders. "Don't you see? Something is seriously wrong!"
  16. He nodded and started down a hall, pausing to wait.
  17. "You--- you're just going to blindly trust this guy?" He gestured to Malevolence. His frantic was growing. "Tam, what did you do to yourself?" "ABSOLUTELY NOT!" Bat roared.
  18. He hesitated. "Well........... he said the water rippled, right? I don't know. Maybe we should get water from a different pool."
  19. Bat stared at him, horrified. "You're just going to--- Cricket, I thought you cared about her!"
  20. "Like heck you will," Bat muttered. "WHAT?? NO!" Bat bolted upright. "TAM--" He gestured wildly, helplessly. "Are you really CONSIDERING this?"
  21. He flushed, mad at himself. He was supposed to be less scared now. What was wrong with him?
  22. "Th- thanks." He smiled. But something about her tone felt so empty. Her staring made him nervous. "You could Narrate yourself some."
  23. "It's nice to meet you," he said politely. But nervously. I cannot stress enough that he is slightly nervous at the idea of another Narrator.
  24. Bat blinked, looking quite nervous. "Uh... who are you?"
