Relieved, Bat collapsed against a tree and hugged his knees. You'll never be able to fix it. He squeezed his eyes shut. She shook her head and strode for the door. Before she got there, though, it burst open to reveal a man. His skin was a dark gray, his hair black with glimmering embers. He grinned, pointed white teeth peeking through his lips. "Hello," he rasped.

    He didn’t really hear her. At least Rose will be happy. Gaioh hadn’t… he didn’t deserve that. He’d done nothing. He hadn’t even had any friends… He felt awful. Guilt pressed down on him so hard he felt like maybe just flopping over. — “That’s the fifth one I’ve planted. Horizon to horizon. I like to keep track.”

    He stared at her for a good several seconds. “I have to go,” he choked, then stumbled into the trees. — She shrugged, then pointed back in the distance. “You see that flag? The blue one?”
