    There wasn't. There was a darkness roiling inside her, though, a darkness that refused to leave. Haly straightened and pulled away. "I'm fine," she snapped.

    She finished chanting, her voice raising even as the smoke swirled, reared, spun around her. And then, as she was obscured from view, she stopped chanting. In the deep silence, there was a swoosh, and the smoke rushed Haly to vanish inside her. She stood for a second, then dropped the book and doubled over coughing.

    She gave him the nastiest warning look he'd ever seen her give and turned the page, continuing.

    She took a deep breath and read a chant off the page. The more she read, the more black smoke billowed from the pages of the book.

    She scowled, rubbing the bottle between her fingers. "Stand back."

    "Because you're too fricking noble." She paused. "And I think because you're used to seeing people die because of the people chasing you. Fine line and all that."

    "Because of you, or because of her own insecurities?" She folded her arms. "Cricket, people can make their own bad decisions. It doesn't have to be your fault just because you didn't tie them to a raxing chair."

    "I don't know. I'll just figure it out."

    "Mmm. Life is a nightmare." She sighed. She'd squeeze her hair dry, but it would just get wet again. "But hey, you're done with that part of the nightmare."

    "I'm bringing TAAron back."

    "Oh, right, you were a noble, huh. So you understand a little." Ofc She slunk forward and touched the fire. The dragon vanished, sucked in by her golden claw. She giggled.

    She skimmed through it, then closed her eyes and yanked on the power well, gasping as too much came through and exploded into marshmallows around her. A long with one other thing: a bottle of metals from TAAron's room. "Ready?" she asked Lerac.

    She glanced at it, then at him, then hopped down out of the tree like a graceful slinky snake (if snakes had legs). She crept toward it. "Since I was little, yeah."

    They were simple, sciencey-magicy things, but he couldn’t keep the concept of them in his head. Haly moved over to one of the shelves and pulled out an item— a glowing book. Strangely, he could keep the idea of it now.

    They arrived in another empty room. Glowing things stood on shelves, but it was impossible to see or remember exactly what they were. In the middle was a slab of stone, raised to chest height, with a shallow dip like a bowl or plate.
