  1. He shrugged. “Yeah, I guess.” - “The… the end goal is not something I think about often.” “We saved him and Five from the facility Aden and Irie were raiding.” Five shoved her hands into the hoodie pocket, trying to make herself look smaller. She felt… sad somehow.
  2. He looked up. “I… I dunno. I fixed her up after the snowbank. I’ve tried not to leave her alone. And I’ve tried to talk to her.” - “I… I just want the power.” Five stepped back, nervous. Ria stepped forward. “Hey, Vi.”
  3. He nodded, looking down at his hands. “Yeah. We can.” I wasn’t enough, he thought sadly. - She tilted her head. “Perhaps. But I have the power j need.” Hoodie it’s a hoodie -__- I just be dumb “I like your clothes,” she said. “You look like a people!”
  4. Heh I love it They came soon. Five wore jeans and a dark gray that seemed to swallow her whole, and she looked very comfortable with that.
  5. “I don’t know,” he whispered. “I’m sorry. It just… felt like going behind her back…” - “Yes. They do. Now I pose a threat.”
  6. “Depressing,” she slurred, then took Two more large swallows. “Mmm. I like this stuff. Makes me feel less lonely… mmmmm, freedom is lots lonelierish than I thought.” She chuckled, giggled, then laughed. “She’s… she’s had thoughts.” He twisted the strap of his bag, unable to meet his eyes. - “But there are multiple. And they pose a threat.”
  7. “Sure.” Ria led them to a nice large store full of clothing. “She accidentally killed someone who was trying to kill us and she felt really bad about it… she hadn’t since. Not… not really…..” - “Yes, I’m a Narrator. But that’s not enough. Even you’re a Narrator.”
  8. “When she nearly froze, in the…” Beosta’s eyes widened. “She’s been…” Bat’s eyes prickled. “She’s okay now, for now, I think… but it feels like there’s hardly anything I can do but hug her. And what if I’m doing that wrong or something? Is there a wrong way to hug someone?” “Nope,” Beosta told him. “Never. Impossible.” She nodded. “Thanks. It was nice to meet them. Your turn, Starlight.”
  9. She grinned. “You’re like children. It’s wonderful.” Five blushed and stepped back from the animals.
  10. “I— I know, I meant I should tell you. Sorry, I… I’m not good at this.” He held his bag tightly. “The snowbank was intentional,” he blurted. - “Okay. That’s a Good plan.” He didn’t want to deal with it anyway. - Her eyes flickered with uncertainty. “I know. But I need the power.”
  11. Which storyline They went into the store. Five quickly got lost in the stacks of stuffed animals. She found herself able to name most of the animals— dog, cat, fish, tiger— but not all of them. She wrapped her blanket around her shoulders and tried to pet as many as she could.
  12. “Uh… there.” She pointed at a store full of stuffed animals. “MY EYES ARE basically ON THE ROAD. IT’S FINE.” - She raised an eyebrow. “Care?”
  13. “It’s okay. Thanks for carrying me.” She stuck close to his side, holding the umbrella up above him.
  14. “You see her??” Aden banged his head on the steering wheel. - She held out a hand, palm downward. The ash below stirred, swirling. “It is the way of things. Power corrupts, corruption destroys. But it is how it must be. And now I am powerful. I hold hundreds of lives in the palm of my hand.”
  15. She snorted. “Imagine that, heh.” She took another large swig. “Well, I’m not ever lovin’ anyone cuz nobody ever gunna love me.” She hiccuped, then banged her head on the bar. “Sounds depressing.” Aden turned forward and decided to ignore his hallucinations.
  16. Great. The kid was crazy. Aden yelped. “What’s going ON??”
  17. Yeah it’s not that bad She lifted her head and looked up at him, wide eyes shining in concern. “Promise?” Aden stared some more. “…okay.”
  18. “Okay.” She pressed her face into his shirt, squeezing her eyes shut. “Don’t get dead…” “…I don’t know who any of those are.”
  19. “Yeah, yeah. Who’m I sposta love if I don’t love my parents?” Her speech was beginning to slur. She took another swig. She clung tightly to his chest. “No! I’m scared!” Five wasn’t paying attention. Ria chuckled and led them up yhe escalator. Five drew some looks for being a grown woman carrying a blanket, but nothing noticeable. Five sure didn’t notice. She was gazing at everything, trying to take it all in at once.
  20. “Mighty… adventures. Okay.” She clutched his arm. “Are you gonna jump??”
  21. Aden sighed in relief. “Why are you here?” She stared down into her beer. “Guess I shouldn’t,” she said. “You don’t need to see.” The darkness was dispelled at the bottom by a single lantern.
