    “Cricket, stop,” she said through clenched teeth. ”I’m here to take her back with me. We need to reevaluate our arrangement.” He raised his eyebrow. “Where are Bat and the soul, anyway?” Rose bit her cheek. “It’s under control.” ” Clearly not,” he sighed. “This was a definite mistake.”

    She tilted her head. “Yeah, sure… you all right?” Before he could answer, a tall man maybe 40 years old appeared. He wore a classy, perfectly tailored suit and held a compass just like the one Bat had gotten off Rose. Hints of tattoos peeked out on the tops of his hands and just above his collar. She jumped to her feet and tried to look utterly unconcerned. “There you are,” he said, giving Cricket a once-over, though the words were directed at Rose. “Yeah, thanks, okay.” He was rather offended to be called an alien. She was the alien. She’d fallen from the scudding sky or something. “That’s not important,” he said, and pulled a gun on them. Five squeaked and grabbed Staright’s sleeve. “No,” he told Violet. “Don’t move.”

He fished in his bag for a Nullite pebble, then dropped it, willing it toward the wall. It clattered against the wall before sliding down to the floor. She looked up and raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”
