    He stopped and gave her a squeeze, then walked with her back to his house. Then he paused. What would they tell his family??

    To the top level. The ride was over quickly. The elevator eased off the speed and came to a halt.

    He blushed, beaming, and put his arm around her. The elevator moved slowly at first, but eased into a rather speedy speed. Also, there were no birds in it, which is kind of sad. Wouldn’t it be nice to have birds in the elevator? They’re pretty thick, yeah. She kept knocking until one of the doors eased open to reveal an ashen-faced male intern. He squeaked.

    The bunny, who did not exist, was rather hurt by the man’s tone. He sniffled sadly.

    He shrugged. I dunno. A while. It’s been expanded several times, and there’s talk of reorganizing the system to make it more orderly. He opened the door embossed with 46. The interior wasn’t carpeted, but there were benches along the outside. Bat pressed one of the two buttons and put the token into a slot, then sat down on the bench.

    There is. He led her down the rows of rooms. The numbers don’t mean anything but where the elevators are. We use the token to work it and it drops back down. Here’s the forties. They turned down the aisle.

    What followed seemed to him quite strange, most likely. His sight stopped functioning halfway through as they messed with his eyes, took them apart, put them back together… but at least he didn’t feel any pain. - She sobbed. She nodded approvingly. “It fits.” She returned a new monocle, but upon closer inspection, it only floated near her eye, rather than touching it. “Ah, here we are,” she said, standing as they arrived at a very normal looking cliff. She shrugged and knocked on the first one. There was no answer. “Come on,” Rose said eagerly, and jogged in that direction. He nodded, blushed, and put his arm around her. They waited for several minutes. The woman called out seemingly random numbers— five, sixty two, twenty three, forty. Eventually she called forty six and Bat reluctantly let go.

    He smiled sheepishly. I have to be. I really could single-handedly upend the entire system in a day if I wanted. I’m amazed she let me through, honestly.

    It felt almost like an office building, but with space between the cubicles that stretched up to the ceiling. And the cubicles were enclosed; they were really more like unanchored rooms. Small ones, though not as small as a normal elevator. A woman at a desk was positioned where they entered. “Top, please?” She glanced up, then looked again and frowned. “They warned me ‘bout you.” ”I won’t break anything,” he promised. She eyed him. “Big space between a true promise and a broken infrastructure.” ”I won’t,” he promised. After a moment of what looked like painful deliberation, she sighed and handed him a small steel rectangle with the letters ‘46’ embossed. “Jus’ wait over there till I call your number.” “Thank you,” he said with a smile, and led Tam over as she’d indicated.

    He paused to make sure she wasn’t hurt, then walked up to a wide, pillar like building. There was a mirroring one on the other side of the trolley tracks. A decent amount of people were making their way inside at any given moment.

    Oh, that was a good question. He looked around. Here— scud, sorry about that. He pulled away and took her hand. It’ll slow down, but won’t stop. Don’t let it psych you out.

    He smiled. Actually, maybe we’ll take the elevator. It’ll mean a short wait, but not too long. The lighting in the caverns was fading to blue now, and had been for some hours. - “And your occupation, miss Irie?” They injected him with several different drugs. His whole body went completely numb, and his muscles stopped responding. He couldn’t twitch, couldn’t blink, couldn’t move at all. - Five whimpered and wrapped her arms around herself again. A woman joined him as he walked. “Hello,” she said. “You’re rather new.”
