Theory about Gavilar
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Shawn Hargreaves's topic in Stormlight Archive
Hmm... I like the spirit of the theory, but I have one major issue with it. Gavilar was the one pursuing the Way of Kings when he was assassinated and who everyone said had changed from his old self, Dalinar was drunk in his cups and was still very much the raging for the Thrill warrior at that point. It's only AFTER the assassination when Dalinar has Gavilar's final words read to him that he starts to read the Way of Kings and started to follow the Codes. -
Awards Announced I was moving all weekend and therefore had no interwebs (not that I do at home still, stupid cable company, *grumble, grumble* ) But I just saw this after looking at the David Gemmell webpage, and I didn't see anything on Brandon's blog or website... anyway, just wanted you all to know that Brandon won the Axe!

I understand that. I guess it's just my own mis-reading of that quote since the Atium is the pure essence of a Shard where for some reason i was thinking it would be a splinter. I was finding a contradiction where none exists between the quote above and the quote where Brandon says we've never seen a Splinter on Scadrial.
-
Hmm, guess I was reading a bit much into this quote from Brandon when talking about Elantris. I assumed that to mean the temporal abilities of Atium were due to Atium being a Splinter

Having already struck from the anonymity of the my Green Hoodie camouflage at a number of threads in the General theory and Stormlight forums I've only now made my way over here to this one. I am an avid fan of Brandon's works and have read all of his stuff not for kids and set in his own worlds. I don't have anything against the Alcatraz books... just haven't picked them up yet, and I'm still catching up on WoT so I'm just not to those that Brandon has written yet. I vowed I would only read the WoT if Jordan actually finished it, which he didn't, but luckily for the world Brandon has picked up the body of work to carry it across the metaphorical finish line. I am fascinated by a number of the theories and thoughts on these books and on the Cosmere in general and hope that I can provide something useful to our wild flights of fanciful theory making. I have visited the TWG a number of times, but never created an account over there to participate, but it was through there that I learned of this site, yay. And no, I've never even been to Utah, though I might have to take a trip just to read Dragonsteel! Well, anyway. I'm in the for the long haul with Brandon's novels so look forward to many years of productive theorizing and conversation!

Perhaps Szeth is actually Voidbinding, but it can mimic windrunning abilities? I guess that throws my theory out that Kaladin, Dalinar, Shallan, Jasnah, and Szeth would eventually develop into one of the 10 orders of Knights Radiant. One for each of the Soulcasting orders, a Windrunner, and two unknown orders one of which is similar to windrunning.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks this!! This has been my theory of what's going on with the Returned since I learned that Endowment is the name of the Shard for Nalthis, that they are basically a Lifeless on Super fuel. My thought on why they have to consume a breath per week is that as "Super Lifeless"TM they are invested objects. As invested objects they can't maintain the connection to Endowment with out a "connection fuel", if there is nothing to maintain the connection the splinter will return to Endowment. The Splinter of Endowment has the ability to regenerate/heal. Once used would that portion return to endowment? What do you guys think? Switching to Scadrial, I have always thought that Atium/Larasium were the splinters of Ruin/Preservation. I'm sure that's been discussed, but I haven't gotten to all the boards yet I also just found this reference in the Brandonotholgy regarding the shardblades when someone asked about a fight between Szeth and a Mistborn: This would seem to me to indicate that the Shardblade is a splinter.

Alloy of Law Prologue and Chapter 1 Now Up
Green Hoodie Mistborn commented on Chaos's article in Brandon and Book News
Shotgun trajectory changes? Even better! -
My feeling is that those are probably "Stonespren" that he can hear screaming, similar to how whatever the odd spren who follow Shallan around are able to speak with her, or how just before Kaladin spoke the Second Ideal he heard Syl's voice in his head prompting him to speak. We know that each of the Knights Radiant orders were in somewhat tied to the power of Honor, but their abilities varied based on the different spren tied to their orders. If as the General Theory theory says that the Heralds are indeed splinters of Honor, Szeth could be of the KR order that dealt more with Talenel's splinter...which if so a Stonespren could indeed be imbeded in his Oathstone and is what helps him be a Surgebinder. Here's an interesting tidbit from a Brandon Q&A at Goodreads: Could it be that it's because he's practicing Surgebinding and not the Cultivation magics of Shinovar? So many thoughts swirling in my head on this book lately...

That was my exact thought when I finished Way of Kings... the most important words a man can say are the Oaths to become a Knight Radiant so that men are defended once more

Thanks for the welcome and I'm glad these threads are only "mostly dead" and I don't have to use the black arts on any of them. As for Kaladin and later vows I would have to say IMO that the later Ideals continue down the protective paths, though each order of Knights Radiant was said by Teft to have their own unique Ideals as the last one or two (can't remember right now), so Kaladin's will be specific to the Windrunners. I would think that as we see him grow in power with more Ideal Oaths, that he will develop the ability to build/create his own armor out of stormlight. That is what the clues in Dalinar's vision of the Knight's Radiant indicate to me. The vision where they fight, not give up the shardplate/blades. Dalinar keeps asking the question, "where did their helm go?", at least three times that I remember. To me that says they were putting stormlight out and drawing it back in to make the helms, and if the helms, why not the rest of the armor? And to me this is a factor of their growing attunement to the power of the Honor shard (yeah I guess I'm already sort of Espousing the Theory of Intent even though I haven't finished mulling it over just yet)

Theory: Honor's Shard Shattered Like Adonalsium
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to FeatherWriter's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This raises an interesting idea, though I don't necessarily agree with the theory in general. IF Honor did splinter and the Heralds each had a piece, when they broke the Oathpact, what happened to those splinters? They would now be dishonored holders of the splinters of Honor and I don't think that would jive. Perhaps they left the splinters in their blades when the departed and those splinters can only be pulled by someone with that kind of honor a-la Arthurian Sword-in-the-Stone? Again, I'm not sure that I agree here, but it does raise some interesting ideas. Part of the difficulty is knowing what Honor could see in the future and when the visions of Dalinar take place in relation to one another. Did the Knights Radiant exist prior to the vision with Nohadon? It seems to imply that they didn't exist before the Way of Kings was written, but nothing definite, though the Heralds DID exist prior to the Way of Kings as Nohadon talks of the "next time the Heralds come". Knights Radiant still exist after the Heralds break their Oathpact, which to me implies that the access to Honor's power for Surgebinding isn't channeled through the Heralds, but it could be possible that the Knights Radiant ended up "falling" because the Heralds had abandoned Honor themselves so eventually that kind of "honor" died out in the world? It could be possible that the Roashar of the current novel is a world with all but one type of honor gone for the present until someone who embodies that can take up the Splinter again... On Honorspren being a generic term, I have to disagree with that idea. Syl calls herself an honorspren, and when she does she says, "I remember/know what I am". Spren seem to be very specific to what they are, windspren, alcoholspren, firespren, so I think if she says "I'm on honorspren" she is talking specifically. There is also the quote in the vision with Nohadon where Nohadon says "...[they] aren't as discerning as honorspren". So they seem to have been around for a while, even before the knights radiant. -
I really like the implications of the initial interpretation here, but I have to agree that I think it's much more WoK/Roshar specific than that. When I read that portion as the Almighty said "...it's not just about all of them", my thought was the planet for Silent Divine and all of its people, which would also imply the second light was a 3rd planet in the same "solar system" that was populated. I do like the idea of the lights being Aona and Skai and the Almighty calling on someone to unite the Shards of Adonalsium, but that is a high calling indeed!

Hi all! Don't know how I've managed to miss these boards for the past few years since I first discovered Brandon's work, but I LOVE the topic in this thread. Sorry if I'm doing a bit of thread necromancy here, but I just wanted to throw back to the OP this tantalizing thought... ...when Kaladin spoke the words on the Tower, they were only "The Second Ideal of the Knights Radiant" "...the First Ideal of the Immortal Words. There were four others.” Sanderson, Brandon (2010). The Way of Kings (Kindle Locations 17622-17623). Tor Books. Kindle Edition. Which means that as Kaladin discovers/needs/meets the next two Ideals he will likely grow even more in power!
