  1. Well, unless the universe Brandon is building has different physical laws from ours, remember there is no such thing as a "time bubble", that is just the current understanding of people in the world. They are really bending space-time when the put up a Bendalloy/Cadmium bubble. How much energy is generated by bending space-time potentially? Where does that energy go? The way I understand his statement, Brandon is saying that FTL tech would be based on harnessing the energy that is generated "in certain allomantic interactions" and I do think those are the "time" based ones and figuring out where the "lost" energy goes... But I'm not a physicist either, just read their 'for the masses' books by Stephen Hawking and Brian Greene
  2. We know from the 11/10 signing that anyone from anyworld can gain Breaths (and presumable use them to Awaken as well, given that the other art Brandon mentioned was Allomancy and if you gained you'd be able to use it.) As to how well they'd be able to use it? well I imagine it would take years of experimentation unless you had an instructor... As to the Ars Arcanum, I like the idea that we're learning along with the author of them and that they are a SS "encyclopedia" of sorts, though the author of the them does seem to know more about the magic systems than some of those using them. I think this for a couple of reasons, one is the Warbreaker AA that talks about levels of Breath in the multiple 10's of thousands, and the only person we ever see with that much is the God-king and he's never used them to do anything other than instinctively awaken (at the end of the novel). tWoK AA talks about 10 essences and their Soulcasting properties, maybe that is "common" enough knowledge, but the only one we ever see with knowledge of it and/or the divine attributes of the essences is Jasnah Kholin, though there is the secret society that likely has the knowledge as well as Teft's family and their sect. In the AoL AA, the notes about the Feruchemical ability to store investiture and such seem to indicate to me that the author knows what is going on when he says that the people of Terris have no idea what they're doing when they do that... I think they have to be written by someone in the 17th Shard as I don't think that Hoid would spend his down time writing, though who knows what he was doing all that time he spent as an information broker/story teller/Wit...
  3. Agreed... I read somewhere else that Brandon said he couldn't write or talk too much about some of the loose ends because they are a main plot thread in the 2nd planned trilogy set in the "modern" Scadrial. I do think that a goal is to use Hemalurgy in some form, even if they don't kill the "subjects", though what a sad person that would leave them... I really want to know what was in the book that Marsh gave to Marasai...
  4. We also know however that on Roshar, the Almighty existed while the Heralds were around, because in the 11/10 Q&A at his signing Brandon responded to a question that "yes the Almighty was still around when the Heralds 'packed it in'" in the prologue. LINK Knowing that I would say that IF Honor was shattered in a similar manner to Aona and Skai, it happened after the Heralds refused to continue, and also after the Knights Radiant disbanded, because we see them disbanding in a vision the Almighty shows to Dalinar. IF this theory is true, then I would say that it is more the reverse, that Honor shattered into 10 splinters because there are 10 facets that Honor naturally boils down to and that is why there are 10 orders of Knights Radiant, as a reflection of that, not that there are 10 orders because Honor shattered into 10 splinters. Does a Shard have to be held? Could the whole shard be laying quiescent, waiting for someone to find it and bond with it? Leras seems to have basically been dead for a long time before Vin "picked up" that shard, or at least most of his Cognitive aspect were dead, sacrificed to trap Ruin, his physical body died right before Vin grabbed the mists... Honor may be dead and whole. I'm inclined to believe that he is shattered, simply because I think Rayse is Odium and since Rayse shattered both Aona and Skai's Shards when he killed them, he likely did the same to Honor when he killed the Almighty.
  5. I assumed this was a scene from later in the books where Dalinar and another Shardbearer salute each other from different Plateau's... that you'll get to eventually
  6. I loved seeing Ironeyes at the end of AoL

  7. Something to that effect. It's exactly what TLR did with age in the original Mistborn books, he would store the age Feruchemically, then burn that Feruchemically invested chunk of metal slowly to gain an exponential amount of stored age a.k.a. youth...
  8. Especially since we know that it gets weaker just traveling from Elantris the city I do wonder though, if as Brandon has confirmed, Galladon is the Dula we see in Way of Kings, could he actually use AonDor on Roshar or did traveling to Roshar cause him to physically revert from his Elantrian form to his Dula form since he was far from the magics that make him Elantrian?
  9. I forgot to mention this in my earlier posts, as I had forgotten entirely about it until just now. When Brandon was answering my question about whether people can gain the magics of other worlds, he also said that some of the magics work away from the source world, but that others of them get weaker or don't work as they move farther from the source world. I'd think this has to do with the realm they interact mostly on... i.e. Allomancy will probably work anywhere since it is mostly a physical dna thing that generates a tie to the shards power, whereas Breaths might not work on a different world, even if you have them, because they are a spiritual tie to Endowment. The only reason I think that Allomancy/Feruchemy/Hemalurgy will work on any world is because eventually we'll be having a Mistborn trilogy in space, and it wouldn't make too much sense for those to not work in space or on another planet once they arrive, though it could generate some interesting conflict.
  10. It could also be that the spren people on Roshar see are the physical shadow of the Cognitive entity and all the actual cognitive activity is happening in that realm and their shadow (i.e. a flame, or a chair, or ale) or something merely mimics that activity in the physical realm.
  11. I don't think anyone is suggesting he is a Kandra as kandra can't use allomancy. If you're thinking he might be more than a Twinborn however... an interesting idea. Vin used allomancy unconsciously well before she started using "luck" on people, but given that Wayne knows about all the other metals, I would assume that he had been presented with them before. How else would someone come to find out that they are a Benalloy Misting given how expensive they keep talking about Bendalloy being in AoL, you'd think somewhere, sometime, most people are presented with different metals to see if they can burn them? It is an interesting idea, but I like to think of it as more that he is just a good actor and someone who "speaks your language" is more immediately trusted than someone who doesn't. I think of Kvothe in The Name of the Wind when he switches to the yokel's accent to get information out of him...
  12. That could also mean that he had one of the Kandra that don't follow harmony visiting him, since he saw both "Marsh" and the "Survivor", though really they could have been anything, even delusions/hallucinations. As to how he was able to move Lessie in front of the bullet? Maybe he was a Steelrunner (Steel Ferring) and his garrote that he had around Lessie's throat was made of steel wire that he was tapping? It says that Bloody Tan moved "in the same instant" that Wax fired his gun. So to me that says some sort of fore-knowledge, but Brandon today confirmed in the Tor Q&A that Tan wasn't an Atium Misting. Either he's a really good guesser and just acted, or he was really fast....
  13. I think Brandon was actually talking about me to the rest of the audience, trying to clue them in on the background to the question, not Hoid and the 17th Shard in the Cosmere adn whatever their motives may be...
  14. Don't know if you posted this question to the Tor Q&A, but the reply to your second is: Also - can one of the Mods add the answers I posted on page 10 into the main list of questions? (They should all be Cosmere questions)
  15. We learned today in the Tor Chat that following Stormlight 2, he may do a followup book about Wax!
  16. Hi all, as Zas said, that was me asking the re-worked question from him. I posted responses to a couple of other questions that I asked in the Ultimate List of Questions thread. But they bear repeating here: 1. Is there only 1 Shard on Silence Divine? "Yes" 2. Can someone gain magics of another world (paraphrase)? Answered specifically - "Anyone can gain breaths on Nalthis, it's much harder to become an Allomancer." - I have thoughts on this that I posted in the Ultimate Questions thread... Here is a link to the transcript of the full Q&A that I typed up... it's 5 pages long in Google Docs so I think a link works better than pasting it here. Let me know if anyone has trouble getting to this document as this is the first time I've tried setting up "public" type viewing on one of my docs. Sanderson Q&A - 11/10/11 - Huntington Beach
  17. Ok... so the signing was great fun! It was my first time getting to meet Brandon and/or see him in person, he's as fun in person as all of his online communication suggests, and he read a selection from a little project called Legion that he wrote on the plane ride back from Paris as a pilot idea for a TV show and it was really fun! He also said that it would be put into ebook and print in the next year or so for everyone. Basically it's a crime/mystery type idea with a great Sanderson twist to it, if anyone has any other questions you can PM me and I'll tell you what I know, but I'm not sure how much we're supposed to talk about things like that in the public boards since they're not out yet... Anyway, I was able to ask one question in the Q&A time and a couple more when he was signing my book... here are the responses to my questions: 1.Is the smoke that is released when a shardblade cuts someone related to the smoke that Nightblood releases when it is drawn? "Is there any relation between the smoke that someone emits and the smoke Nightblood emits" (Brandon's paraphrase) - "Yes there is (a relation)" 2.Is there only one Shard on Silence Divine? - "Yes" 3.Can people gain the magics of other worlds? I.e. could Galladon gain breaths on Nalthis? - "I'll answer this specifically: Anyone can gain Breaths on Nalthis. Becoming an Allomancer is much harder So that is a couple of questions off the list at least! I tend to think that for the last question, he was implying that the ease of gaining each magic system depends on which realm it relates to: Physical,Spiritual, or Cognitive. I.e. breaths are easy to gain because they are tied to the spiritual realm, whereas Allomancy is hard to gain because it requires a certain physical DNA to access those powers, you have to have your DNA changed via Lerasium or be born with the right code... thoughts? zas678 - Brandon thought the question about the smoke was a "really smart question" and he knew immediately I was from the 17thshard when I asked so kudos on the smart question also - I realize that the 3rd question isn't exactly what you had wanted asked zas, but it was a spin on it, so while your question wasn't answered directly there, it was sort of answered! I have audio of the Q&A that I'm going to transcribe, is there somewhere specific that I should post that or link to a Google Doc or something?
  18. I think I understand the 2nd question, but for your first question to clarify, do you mean "is the smoke that we see when shardblades cut a person related to or similar to the smoke that Nightblood leaks when he is drawn"?
  19. Hiya all! I'll be hitting up the signing down in Huntington Beach, CA on 11/10/11 Which of the open questions would you like me to throw out and fish for answers? Thanks
  20. I agree that the Parshendi do act honorably, but there are so many things we don't know. If they are honorable, how does that then compute with Jasnah's theory that the Parshmen are in fact the voidbringers of legend? If they are voidbringers, and Gavilar was on the road to returning the Knights Radiant by following the codes and the Way of Kings, the assassination makes total sense. If instead the Parshendi are in someway tied to Honor it makes no sense other than your theory, that Gavilar was somehow tainted by Odium and that by assassinating him, it would push Dalinar on the path of Knights Radiant himself. Gah!! we need books 2-10 NOW!
  21. Great find! I was looking around chasmfiend and forgot that was just another name for really big greatshells so I wasn't searching for that keyword when I looked. Interesting that they only come from the dead bodies of greatshells...
  22. I don't think that is a named sword per se, but it would be a Dawnshard since Nalan is one of the Heralds, right? I'm thinking it's not the sword's name because in the passage it's in lowercase, whereas Oathbringer and Sunraiser are both capitalized when mentioned.
  23. Drat, you've found the main flaw in my idea that it's important! But seriously though. I feel there is something to this, given that we only ever learn the name of two shardblades, Oathbringer and Sunraiser. One wielded by Dalinar, the other by King Elhokar. We see numerous other shardblades throughout the book, a couple from viewpoint characters, but these are the only ones we ever hear named. You're right to question the origin of the names since we don't know it. It will be interesting to see how these characters develop in the coming book/books. See if Elhokar becomes a beacon of Honor or not. See how Dalinar works going forward... I just feel that the names wouldn't have been included by Brandon if they weren't important in someway, he's not as frivolous as that. Though I could be reaching for foreshadowing & ties where none exist!
  24. ...so the dead rat in our attic WASN'T causing the nasty smell beneath our bathroom vanity apparently, one wonders what else lurks in the hearts of walls

  25. So... does anyone else find it significant that Dalinar, who is receiving the video blog of the Almighty, is also the wielder of a Shardblade named Oathbringer? This whole novel revolved around the oathpact being broke and historical oaths being forsaken, and Dalinar who is being told to "unite them" and that the "knights radiant must stand again" is the one who bears the sword Oathbringer. I agree with another thread that says Syl is just unhappy with Oathbringer itself and not shardblades in general, but if she is upset with them in general it would be because of the oaths abandoned I'd think, since she is Honorspren. Is there any mention in tWoK that I've missed that talks of sword names and where they come from? Since swords are usually captured in combat, how is the lineage traced if the names are historic?
