  1. It specifically says that rather than following Balat and the other to where Father and Balat's gf were, she went upstairs and got the packet of leaves... pretty specific intent there to me. He is violent, and abusive, and after that day a murderer as well, but to maintain his Spren, I think Kaladin would not have been allowed to murder Father like that. Oppose, arrest, detain, but not kill. So again, not all Spren are as discerning.
  2. Shallan could lightweave as a child, it's presumably what caused her mother and friend to try and kill Shallan. If she could lightweave, she and Pattern had already bonded... but that would have required Shallan to have spoken the first Oath wouldn't it? I wonder who told her the oath and prompted her to speak it?
  3. As to Vasher's timeline in Roshar... we know that Adolin is in his early 20's (just shy of or just over 23 per WoR pg. 568). We also know that Zahel taught Adolin and we know that most Lighteyes start training with the sword when they are around 9 or 10, so that would mean that Zahel has been an Ardent in the service of the Kholin family for something like 12 - 13 years as I read the texts. EDIT: in prepping this response I also came across this gem: which is very interesting statement in light of the ending events of WoR and also coming from a Splinter of another Shard who worldhopped to Roshar and chooses (I'm sure voluntarily) to serve in that man's Ardentia
  4. Pretty sure the HoA states that the 1st Generation was changed to Mistwraiths and then spiked by TLR. As a reminder, someone who has something stolen doesn't have to be killed to have their power/whatever stolen, per WoB, though that is usually the case because of who is doing it and the strike point of the spike.
  5. What Edgedancer said above, plus to me Shallan and Jasnah's soulcasting is slightly different, though it may be similar in concept. Similarly, the way Windrunner's and Skybreakers utilize/access/make use of the Gravity surge may look or function differently for them. For me as well, Brandon says that there are 30+ magic systems (or ways of accessing the powers of creation) on Roshar. For the KR it really only seems to matter your intent & actions and the type of Spren you bond which determines your powers. Windrunner's 2 surges really seem to be a set of 3 abilities. Shallan's Lightweaving and Soulcasting right now seem to be very distinct powers. Similarly Jasnah's Soulcasting and "transporting" seem to be distinct in operations and usage. it remains to be seen I suppose for Skybreakers whether they mesh or blend, but I tend to think that each Order will manifest their access to the shared Surges at least slightly differently.
  6. It's questionable that Shallan killed her father to protect others to me. She went to her room to get the poison before ever seeing the situation in the common room. She poisoned the wine before Father/Balat fought, after discovering Malise's death. She gave it to him before Balat tried to stab him incurring his iron poker wrathful beating. Except for Malise, Shallan killing her Father because of what she feared he might do is very similar to Kaladin planning/allowing Moash to kill Elohkar because of past mistakes and fears of the future. The family should have subdued their father and reported the current murder to the Highprince. Then Balat could have inherited. if Balat had managed to kill Father, he would have been a Patricide and either Jushu or Wikim would have inherited. Adolin's murder of Sadeas, Shallan's murder of her Father are very similar to the concept of assassinating the king that caused a break between Kaladin and Syl to me. It just goes to show that "not all spren are as discerning as honorspren." Which still gives me some hope for Adolin
  7. It will be interesting to see if Shallan has an easier time soulcasting organics and whether that has to do with the Surges or preference! Just because "sky" is in the skybreaker name doesn't mean that they can fly... (they probably can, I'm just saying until we see one in action let's reserve judgement ). Windrunners run on the winds (from the common person perspective), maybe Skybreakers do something that from a common perspective "breaks the skies"
  8. I'm pretty confident that Truthwatchers are #5 and Bondsmith are #10, which would by default put the Willshapers at #8. It's hard to judge Truthwatchers abilities because we really only have Renarin's fits/numbers and his words by which to work. Do we have confirmation that each surge works the same for both Orders which share them? I know that Elsecallers and Lightweavers both share the transformation surge, but it seems to me that Shallan's ability to Soulcast is different in what and how she can. Maybe that is related to the little practice Shallan has had, but it could also be that the magic works differently.
  9. Definitely. I have long assumed that like much in the Vorin world that "Sunmaker" was the romanticised/rose colored glasses of history title for the last king to unite Alethkar into a "golden age"... but it does sound very like a Returned name. Could still be coincidence though. In Warbreaker the Returned are named by their priests, so it could just be a "human tendency" kind of thing to elevate and romanticize beings of power/importance.
  10. On Adolin v. Sadaes, I wouldn't say that this action will preclude him from being a Knight Radiant... certainly not a Windrunner, but one of the other orders who have "more individual oaths", it could still happen. Definitely not a Skybreaker, though the KR will need one or more of those on their side to fight the other (misguided?) ones. Shallan murdered her father and yet still managed to make it! So there is still hope for Adolin, though I still think that he is being set up to fall in later books. He is resisting the Thrill right now, which is a good thing and could mean that he is destined for a different order of KR still (I hope).
  11. I did when Hoid mentions perfect pitch!! So at least 2nd heightening...
  12. ^ +1 for pretty much all of the questions right above!
  13. Interesting, I hadn't remembered that WoB, but as Argent just posted in a signing response, Brandon said that the Spiritual realm is also Heaven. Is there something beyond Heaven? Unclear in the Cosmere. There is a "God Beyond" that we have seen reference to in a few of the newer works, which seems distinct from mankind's memory of Aldonalsium, so maybe there is something past the spiritual realm, though with the newer information, I would say it is less cut and dry... Remember, "there is always another secret."
  14. How about these? Letter #1 - "Hoid's Impassioned Plea" Letter #2 - "The Dragon's Reasoned Response"
  15. Welcome Crystal bodies... Who says they don't stop there? It's a bit debated, but seems to me to make sense as a final place...
  16. I like "Second Letter" better, though the letter itself is a bit unnerving to me to be given such a mundane title
  17. I don't know if it's too early to update with known Info since the book it out, but you can add a couple of people to your list in p5), along with an order name (and likely location in the list)... I'll not post them here but they will very sons become common knowledge hereabouts!
  18. This book was totally worth the wait... I hope you all enjoy it too
  19. This might be better in the WoR discussion forum still That said...
  20. I haven't thought of any examples of an unreliable narrator in a Cosmere book. I do think though that Cusicesh is "spren", just not a spren. SO while I think the narrator is correct, it may also be misleading slightly from in-world perspective so as not to tip it's hat to any secrets that may come in the future.
  21. I think Odium actually made sure that I received a copy early so that I could read of his glory and then post my receipt here to engender more hate from the 17thShard... seems like it's right up his alley!
  22. I would say the sun in Shadesmar is not linked to the "real' sun at all, given that there should be no cognitive thought going on in/on/around an uninhabited star... a sun should be an empty space like much of the rest of space between the cognitive worlds. I wonder what a Shard looks like in Shadesmar?
  23. I'll look in the mail for that box... for now I'm content with my copy of WoR! I actually bought both thinking that I could read the ebook until the original arrived on my doorstep tomorrow. Ah well, I have all his other ebooks, might as well keep up the "library". I did take an extended lunch... so now i'm 1/10 through it, very hard coming back to work though.
  24. Here is the amazon MP3 page for the Return of the Kings complete recording... they are great, they include the actors singing roles, like Eowyn singing the death dirge for Theodred, and Pippin's song in the halls of Minith Tirith.
  25. My copy of Words of Radiance!!! It is beautiful and I can't wait to get down to it... Shame I took tomorrow off work to read it and not today!
