  1. But yeah, the Watsonian answer is that it has to deal with self-image and cognition of themselves. So there's a tension/urgency for healing.

The Doyelist answer is I think Brandon is mindful of disability politics, he needs injuries to be able to be healed if necessary but some characters NEED to have the injuries/disabilities if its part of their character. Like, even if there's a million ways to heal Cyclop's injuries in the X-men franchise....but you need him with the visor/sunglasses.

So it's important to remember that Progression (and most forms of Investiture-based healing) doesn't technically 'heal' in the way you might assume. It changes your physical body to match your cognitive and spiritual perception of yourself.

The Lopen evidently still thought of himself as someone with two arms, so he was able to use Stormlight to manifest his missing arm and 'restore' his personal image of himself.

Kaladin's scar was sooooo integral to his perception of himself and where he was on his personal journey, so Progression couldn't heal it. Similarly, his own Stormlight rejected the tattoo because it was covering/modifying that scar, which went too strongly against his self-perception.

Would [healing] something like a birth defect, would that require somebody to have Regrowth, or can they do it with just Stormlight?

It depends on how they envision themselves.

Given that Stormlight healing matches to mental self-image (as shown by both the Lopen and by the Reshi monarch), could a really powerful hypnotist change someone's self-image in a way that would affect Stormlight healing? Could a powerful hypnotist use Stormlight healing to change a human into a listener?

    Brandon Sanderson

Theoretically possible...to an extent. There is a limit to this, but the limitation is the amount of Investiture you have and access to Stormlight—or you know, Voidlight—can evidence this. Transformations that are happening in the storm to the listener forms are involved in this. That could theoretically happen to a human as well. But you would basically—what most likely would happen is it would have to involve a specific set of circumstances and then entering the storm, and then exiting as a listener—that could happen. You guys ask some farfetched things—that one's not so farfetched. It does require some specificity, but it could happen.

Cosmere healing. Some magic systems have internal healing, such as Stormlight; external healing, such as AonDor. With internal ones, the perception of the magic user seems to matter a lot. Is that also a factor for the external ones?

    Brandon Sanderson

So, there are various types of healing in the cosmere. We have things like Stormlight, where you get the Stormlight and it heals you, and that one is very, very influenced by your perception. How you view yourself, and what you view as being healed, has a huge influence on what actually happens to you. Externally, if someone heals someone else, like a Knight Radiant uses the power to heal someone, or an external force heals them, is it still filtered through perception? I'm gonna say both perceptions are important in that. They both are relevant.

It's kinda ironic Lopen's self-image and cognition wasn't affected by the million one-armed Hardazzian jokes.

  2. After A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and Fallout I started to really getting into the Pitt whch is airing its 2nd season now.

Its actually interesting because im watching 3 medical shows concurrently, the Scrubs revival, St.Denis and The Pitt.

I'm also watching The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins. I'm a huuuuge Kimmy Schmit and 30 rock fan, so I am really looking forward to this show. It hasnt hit me the same way as those shows, but I'm coming back every week to watch!

  3. I liked Stampede....although idk, it kinda irritates me that its not a remake, like i was shocked that Knives came into the story super early on compared to the original anime. But I suppose its one of those things where people call it pointless if its a 1:1 remake but it risks alienating fans like me.

Still a gorgeous show, I was really reluctant going in because the 3D CGI seemed like a bit much but god bless they did a good job.

  4. masterpiece game, I need to replay it though. I initially did a pacifcist route....however I was really disapointed that I didnt get the pacificst ending because I took the pacifist name way too literally and didn't do all the quests needed to actually get the pacificst end boss and the like.

However, I still need to beat Delta rune 3+4 before I do another undertale playthrough.

  5. I have a question for the more scientific inclined. Part of the early parts of the book, that astrophage moves throughout the room, and the main characters loses it, I recall, he's able to find it and count it.

I've never actually used a microscope before, but is that BS? Like if you gave me a petri dish with a bacteria and I somehow flung that bacteria. There's no freaking way I'm finding that individual bacteria again, right?

Or is that something I am supposed to turn my brain off to enjoy the story?

Loved the book, cant wait for the movie. ALthough there is some concerning discouse on how spoilery the trailer is. I hope its a hit.

Well... my beef with the legalese in WaT was more that there was no foreshadowing (not counting TOdium spotting the loophole at the end of RoW) for the vulnerabilities in the contract. Everything that went into the contest for the capitals of the Coalition was due to a hideously obscure section of Alethi legal code that had never been mentioned before but apparently existed in the contract created by Yolish Wit using a Connection language hack or the modified version made by Yolish Rayse in the really brief deal made by Dalinar. I didn't see either of them consult a lawbook. Too much weight on that little plot fulcrum. Maybe it's just that this is the consequence of the sudden knee-jerk deal they made, but to have Taravangian exploit a loophole in an agreement that he had no influence over... that bothered me more than the use of contracts. If it had been at the beginning of the series, no problem. This close to the end... it felt like a diabolus ex machina even though it was at the beginning of the book. Okay, I get that it was designed to be the inciting incident and premise for WaT than an arbitrary wrench thrown in at the end of the arc, but still...

Everything about Shards or denizens of the realm of the mind being bound by rules or agreements? Fundamental concepts of reality having to continue to be that concept and to be consistent? Sure, I'll buy that. The loophole that Leras exploited? Sure - that's backstory and premise and he paid a price with his mind. The arbitrary definition of a country for a single nation that applies to the entire coalition? That feels... less on point.

Yeah, I can get this.... however if I can respond. I don't think that really matters much.

Because the legalese did not matter until Todium came into play. Odium says as much in Rhythm of War. Odium assures Dalinar that they didn't need to go into the weird legal specifics because Odium would honor the spirit of the deal. The only reason the legalese mattered was because the power shifted, and obviously Taravangian is totally different and is willing to do underhanded rust if you misplace a comma. So I actually thought that was appropriate. I love this concept because it reminds me of my favorite line from Julius Casesar by Shakspeare. I forget the context but Mark Anthony is making a deal with someone, and that someone wants to shake on it, and Mark Anthony says "Nah, we're men of honor. Our words are enough, we don't need to shake on it." [paraphrased]

As far as OP is concerned....yeah I get his grievance but personally I can dismiss it. We're dealing with gods and the problem with stories of omnipotent gods is "Why don't they the powerful gods just do x and end the story". So there's always going to be a need of a contrivance to restrict them somehow. As much as Brandon is famous for his hard magic systems, the Shards are obviously the 1 thing that is super soft magic. Which is why I think in Mistborn, you're at your peak strength when you first pick up a shard, not because of the raw power but because your intent is likely going to betray your own personal prerogatives.

  7. Like Severance, this is effectively the plot of Kingdom Hearts II.

Ultimately either the thousand of years of memory would overwhelm the pitiful amount of memories of mortal you. Or maybe the mortal you's memories would be incredibly strong because of all the mortal constraints it would be way "stronger" than the pre mortal you.

  8. I love her! She's fun. I do find it frustrating as TacoBellChoutameal said, when I wanna know information that she's not interested in and she isn't curious, lol. But yeah she adds a different tone to the series, it's fun seeing her contrast with everyone. Plus there's that mystery behind her and why certain parties are invested in her future.

The idea of a girl with a peter pan complex becoming so intertwined with cultivation. I delight in the irony!

@Argenti, right, but I don't understand why you say that Bondsmiths of the Nightwatcher can grant Adhesion. Bondsmiths don't grant Surges, that I can tell, except maybe to their squires.

Bondsmiths don't grant surges but they have the surges. So if Nitpicking bonded with the Nightwatcher, a spren of pure cultivation, you'd have access to that surge in spite of the NIghtwacher being a spren of pure cultivation.

Granted, I personally might argue, well thats the nahel bond granting the surge and not really the Nightwatcher, but I'm uncertain if the text supports that position.

I have not done Cult yet. I have done Coming of Age, Retsnom, Romance, Killing Game, Mystery up to lock, Slasher, and now I'm on Truth. Depending on how much Truth scars me, I'll either do Cult or Eva next. If I'm not scarred enough I'll do Cult first. If I am deeply scarred, I do Eva.

Lol. I was actually disapointed by the killing game route. I was hoping it would be....a killing game played straight. But the fact Takumi kinda ushered it in, as well as the weird format of the killing game....idk, I wish it was more titular and played like a mini-Danganropa story.

I know she was born with the royal locks, a manifestation of her lineage but I dont remember anything about her being more gifted specifically. She spends the majority of the Book confused by Awakening and frustrated that she cant do it.

Her lineage grants her a cosmetic ability at best. It is a tiny part of her spiritweb connected to a returned generations ago. Returned are just juiced up cognitive shadows.

Isnt it kind of endowments thing that everyone is born with the same set amount of Investiture but they can create gods by endorsing eachother wisely with said power?

Oh I just looked that up.

    Spoiler

At first I thought user Nitpicking was.....well nitpicking because it was a cosmetic ability.... like to me thats like saying the nails on a Herdzaian from Stormlight was an extra investure ability but upon review on the Royal Locks page on coppermind. /https://coppermind.net/wiki/Royal_Locks It appears that royal locks does give people extraordinary abilities. That just wasn't apparent in Warbreaker. At least in the main story, I don't think I read the annotation that page cites.

  12. I don't see any of these characters becoming a true fullborn. I think its likely they might acquire a band of mourning or hemalurgy to get to that level.

As for a true fullborn, I'd imagine its a numbers game, as billions of people are born on Scandriel over hundreds/thousands of years , I think there is going to be someone lucky to born lucky.

In large manuscripts, typos are really easy to miss, which is why a few slip through in each book. Nobody misses an entire sentence with a statistic for the number of people who die each day, and checking that the statistic is in the right ballpark is very easy for anyone with access to the current worldbuilding notes, Google, and a calculator.

There are straight up continuity errors in those threads. Why not? I don't think the demographics of the cosmere are set in stone on a per diem basis.

  14. I conceptualized Odium's not exploiting loopholes more about his Intent as Passion, to care about the spirit of the rules rather than a formal oath. I recall in the early chapters of WaT, Jasnah and Wit talking about Odium and loopholes and that topic came up.

But yeah, I think Taravagian had the ability to absolve himself of the deal. I think we can agree that both parties to an agreement can stipulate to end the contract.  If Business A makes a contract that Business B needs to perform x. If Business A acquires and owns Business B, then they can relieve themself of that contract.

  15. Can you like, give examples of what scenes irk you? I am having a tough time conceptualizing what you're critiquing?

I feel ignorance is  completely justified in the book because very often are books constrained in a static world where the status quo is maintained.

There's wars, godlike beings coming into play that completely dismantles any rigid structure given the extreme circumstances so morality is going to be questioned when so much is in flux.

Oh duh!!! I was thinking exclusively of the old magic i forgot she was part of a bondsmith bond. I'm not sure if I would make that conclusion though.  The nightwatcher is a splinter of cultivation and the stormfather is a splitner of honor...but I think thats probably unrelated to whatever makes them special to give bondsmith nahel bonds.
