Do Shards have unique abilities?
Argenti replied to Hoids Imaginary Friend's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That certainly feels weird. Ruin couldn't do it. -
How do you feel about inter-species…
Argenti replied to christianrapper's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes, like you said, Singers are downright normal as far Alien romances go. If one gets disturbed by crab-people kissing humans, they're very much not prepared for people kissing straight up Crabs, or Insects, or things with way to many eyes. There are weirder things that people are attracted to. Some people think the color blue is attractive Especially with how the singers are almost Asexual while in other forms, physically doesn't really matter. -

While I probably wouldn't be attracted for a sentient ape (Too hairy and their proportions aren't attractive), beings like Sho-del,or singers aren't viewed as animalistic; not that would really stop anyone. I'd date a singer. They're close enough for Me. The part about dating something odd and not knowing it doesn't really have anything to do with cross species. That's trust issues. I would be equally upset if my partner turned out to have been lying about their past as I would be if they where secretly an ape. -

Granted. You can no longer see the color red. I wish for a fruit candy. -
Not really, there's a lot of different ideas. I think we're going for a slight horror tone, on a small city sized space-station, and something is gonna start killing people. There's also aliens, who have ftl and want things.

Do Shards have unique abilities?
Argenti replied to Hoids Imaginary Friend's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That's just in bad faith. You know what he means. He says "But a lot of creatures on Roshar do have what I would term an in-between step between human-level intelligence and animal-level intelligence on Earth. Ryshadium are in this; chasmfiends, as well, are smarter than an animal can get on Earth." He's using the definition of animal as 'an animal as opposed to a human being," rather than the biological definition of multicellular, eukaryotic organisms in the kingdom Animalia It's one thing to nitpick an argument, another to ignore reasonable logic and colloquial terms just because. -
I can not. TBPM has read WAT

Yeah but you fart constantly. I wish for more time. -
What I like to keep in mind is: Limits are more interesting than powers: a good story revolves around what magic can't do, rather than what it can. Start with what your story needs the magic to do, and what it needs it to not do. Try not to expand it beyond what the story needs: big, complex magic systems are prone to collapse under their own weight. I've done it before, and it's way harder to cut back from a system you've come to love than to never expand it. Explain the rules a bit. You don't need to explain everything, but a readers will wonder the whys and hows of magic. "If John can control water, why can't he just rip the water from a person?" You should also explain what makes a magic user different from everyone else. "Why can John control water, but Luke can't" As for genericness? All art is derivative, just try to make it more interesting to the audience you're trying to reach. Even if you don't change the core details, you can change the dressing to make it appear more inspired. You feel like your elemental magic system is to basic? Change the elements, (Wood and metal mayhaps?) add a weird way to access it (Consuming specific herbs lets you access it), and viola! You have a unique magic system. If you want a unique core, and don't really have a plan to the story, scroll around on science wikipedia for phenomena that catch your eye. I've made a system which lets you absorb and redirect kinetic energy, based off my 8th grade science class. Follow your heart.

Sult, the World of the Hungry Sands (Light Cosmere spoilers)
Argenti replied to Argenti's topic in Sanderson Fan Works
Mhhh I like that. Taldians are trying to colonize, the Scadrians are mucking around, working against the Taldains mostly on principle, rather than out of the interest of the Sultians. I'll outline the geopolitics.- 10 replies

Analysis of the dawnshards with new information

It happens to us all. For a while I thought Ruin and Preservation were brothers. -

Ahh the thrill of trading.

But it's like... what do the aliens want? Do they just think humans are funny to watch? Are humans tasty?
-
But the Worldbuilding is the best part!
-
So the aliens want human technology? I suppose, but most ftl requires some insane source of energy. More than fission can supply. I don't know how effective fusion is...
-
If you have ftl why on earth do you need nuclear materials? Unless there's a big gap in tech?

One would have to make them. Hemalurgy isn't a genetic thing, typical need to physically spike something and rip a bit of it's spiritweb (soul) and put it in a spike, which then gets put into the recipient. k. Maybe as like, a coming of age thing? You turn 16, pick your spikes, then live. If you want to call it hemalurgy, the general vibe should stay the same, but you don't have to use Metal. You could use crystals, wood, rock or bone as spikes, anything goes! If you want it less dark, maybe you have splinters of Endowment that look like animals bless babies at birth with animal traits?
-
The basics of hemulurgy is that you're stealing a part of someone else. For example, you could steal the wings from a bird (well, with modified hemalurgy), or intelligence and put it in a rock?
-
If you want it set in the cosmere, you'll need to figure out the magic system, at least roughly, before you get to far. Maybe somehow... hemalurgy related? The source is human souls? That's the big reveal?
-
I don't really have time to make another world, but I can help with some of the cosmere stuff. If you want hybrids (What do you mean by that? Half humans?) and AI, you'll need a big magic system. Like probably a major shardoworld?

Sult, the World of the Hungry Sands (Light Cosmere spoilers)
Argenti replied to Argenti's topic in Sanderson Fan Works
Yes, that's what i'm thinking. Perhaps part of Ambition's trail of blood across the cosmere? I'm not really sure, since the exact shards that fought here don't really matter. Maybe Invention was involved? Yes, you'd be correct. There's no perpendicularity, at least not naturally. Blood Sand sounds good. Very much in the space age. Think Komashi esque tech level on Sult: they're figuring out spaceflight (Put a bunch of sand at the end of a rocket. It will fly fast.) I think a scadrian colony could be good, but more research station esque is more appropriate. Sult isn't a very attractive place to settle, with the blood hungry sand in all. Technically, there's a temporary luhel bond that can be made with the sand (with direct blood to sand contact, and the proper inntent), reminiscent of Sand master, but in practice, it's nearly impossible to use without at least some deaths. The sand drains blood at a faster rate than white sand drains moisture, and of course, blood is much harder to replenish. It's a constant fight with the intent of the sand, it wants to consume blood and investiture, including yours. When a cognitive bound is made, the thousand hungry whispers of the sand fill your mind, demanding blood, and demanding to be used, often making it difficult to muster the necessary focus to control the sand. The whispers of the sand, and it's hunger, can be sated with other sources of investiture, including that present in other life. Killing someone with Blood Sand will drain them of their moisture, and prevent it from consuming yours. For obvious reasons, most Sultians consider such a bond incredibly evil, and the various governments have banned them entirely: bonding the red sand is worthy of the death penalty in most Cradles. Most uses of the sand are mechanical, and thus are not nearly as risky or morally dubious. Now that is why I keep saying "at least not naturally," no shard resides here, but Autonomy, being Autonomy, has invested an avatar in the system. Through this avatar, and the cult they command, Autonomy has co-opted the resident system, providing those who go through their mysteries a trickle of investiture which enables a permanent, and safer bond with the Blood Sand. A sand master or two has also come along. A sand master would indeed have a good time here. While the bond is slightly different, their natural ability to control White Sand does carry over. They'd have better control over the sand itself, better "terms" of the bond, and a lower chance of draining themselves. They might experience some difficulty though, because the sand does act differently, moving forward even when you don't command it to, and draining them faster than white sand (Though it drains slower for sand masters than the average person.)- 10 replies

I'm thinking I might be an engineer / theoretical physicist type. What kind of FTL are we doing? What's the mumbo-jumbo that powers it?
