  1. "No. There was a lot that happened before that. It wasn't until after Mica that they made the choice to add the implants. There were a lot of agents around that time who made what the brass considered 'concerning choices'."
  2. "I think a dictatorship. It was before I was born. By the time I was seven or so, the original philosophies were pretty much dead and everything was just a mess."
  3. That's darkly hilarious, Martin thinks. "No, that was what they were working towards. But there were a lot of people who didn't like the plans they wanted to enact."
  4. "What? No. I have no idea who the Fenon Clan is." How to explain the situation on Earth? "I was under the command of the International Security Coalition. Most of the time."
  5. "Not anymore. But before. When I was back there, yes. It does a couple other things as well. None of it good."
  6. "When they're hooked up to the stuff that keeps your heart beating and your lungs working, it's a pretty strong incentive."
  7. "Ways to keep us from turning traitor. Or at the very least, a way to stop anyone who went rogue." He swallows. "It's a ridiculously complicated procedure. Stupidly expensive. Puts an agent out of commission for almost seven months. But the results were worth it, I guess." Martin takes a deep breath. "It's an implant. In the spine. A bunch of wires hooked up to a mini comp on one end, and various important things on the other."
  8. "Something I learned early on is that you always add contingencies. Damage control of sorts. And, well, they weren't taking any chances." He rubs the back of his neck with his free hand again. "There were contingencies for all of us." This part is the one he doesn't quite understand.
  9. Well. Best to start at the beginning, then. "I'll be honest. Some of this stuff, I pieced together from reports, cam footage, and individual accounts. It's possible I'm wrong on some of it. But. You know I was a special operative."
  10. Martin smiles. "Thanks." He thinks while they walk. Where does he even begin with this? "So. What do you want to know?"
  11. "Okay." Martin closes his eyes. "But. Maybe not here. This isn't something we really want people overhearing."
  12. "I'm... not?" What is she talking about? "It's just something that happens. There's nothing I can do, so I might as well adapt."
  13. "Eh. Not anymore." He's reasonably certain that most of the more advanced stuff can't be triggered across universes, so it seems likely.
  14. There's a difference between this and before, but... "Yes. It won't impede me," he hurries to add. "It never happens when I'm doing something important." The bio scanner is good for something after all.
  15. "Just something that...happens sometimes." Great. Now the thing's on the fritz. Another stretched moment, but not as intense. He can track things. He can't speak.
  16. He's not. He knows that for sure. "I'm mostly functional," he says slowly. Camille is still working with tree branches. Ayia is still here. So he can't have lost more than five minutes or so. He reaches up to touch the spot on the back of his neck. It feels normal.
  17. For a long, stretched moment, there's nothing. Then a second flare, that races up and down his spine, and everything snaps back into place. He inhales instinctively, staring at nothing. "I - " How much time did he just lose? It can't be much. "I - " What does he say?
  18. "I thought you knew about this kind of - " Something flares across the point at the back of his skull. Loud. He shifts to parade rest as his vision goes white.
  19. I finished Shadow and Bone. So now it's a long wait for Siege and Storm. And I also read The Stolen Moon, a middle-grade sci-fi. It's the sequel to The Lost Planet, and gosh, I hope that one day the third one comes out.
  20. "Ayia," Martin suddenly asks. "Are there any substances besides aluminum that are immune to Awakening?" @Channelknight Fadran
  21. Alright, here we go, let's do this! Wax'n'Wayne shenanigans is one of the things I'm waiting for. I know a lot of people get annoyed by the humor, but as a not-very-funny person, I like humorous segments. The old Mulan, the animated one probably has something to do with it.
  22. "Well, if it works against Awakeners, I can kind of see the appeal." Martin rubs his leg where Camille had bitten him.
  23. "Well, that's always a possibility," Martin says, watching Camille as she cuts branches off the trees. "Or maybe ranged weapons?"
