you aren't from America are you?

And it's the "National Socialist German Workers Party" for future referance

Why should they be from America, seeing there are nearly 200 other countries they could be from?

I'm a little confused as to how the analogy works too. Would you care to explain?

  2. I feel like the Dark/Lighteyes system definitely still exists, just that Radiants have managed to skip the queue and so many characters are either Radiant or Lighteyed that we don't see much of the Darkeyes anymore.

  3. A very quick one for Final Empire. I kind of like the idea of building Kelsier up as a series-long protagonist and then yanking that out from the viewer when they actually watch the film.

    Spoiler

Mists blow through the dark streets of Luthadel. They are disturbed by a Mistborn passing overhead.

    CUT TO

KELSIER stops the coin from a Coinshot in midair, firing it back at the Coinshot before pulling it towards him and spinning out of the way to hit a Hazekiller behind him.

    LORD RULER (VO)

    I killed you once before.

    KELSIER (VO)

    You tried.

Kelsier stands in front of the CREW, going through his plan on a blackboard.

    KELSIER (VO)

I represent that thing you’ve never been able to kill, no matter how hard you try.

Kelsier salutes YEDEN’S ARMY, who cry out and raise their weapons.

    KELSIER (VO)
    I am hope.

CUT TO: VIN and Kelsier sitting at a dinner table.

    VIN

How do you kill a nobleman in his own mansion?

    KELSIER

With a knife to the chest. (Beat) Well, two knives.

  4. You could definitely make the argument Dalinar is 'genre blind', what with trusting basically everyone he shouldn't. If it does turn out that Todd wins and Dalinar becomes a Fused, then he and Moash could be the blind men. Especially if Dalinar is defeated by a betrayal he should have seen coming.

  5. I feel like I can tell exactly who hasn't read Wax and Wayne by who makes theories about the 'sword' quote. Not trying to be mean, but it is fairly explicitly stated.

As for the general idea of it, I feel like Sazed isn't the kind to resurrect Vin without Elend. It would be kind of cool to have their Cognitive Shadows running around though. I'd like to see Elend discussing power and politics with Dalinar and Taravangian.

Well...I guess that's fine... so long as there isn't plot relevant information that's only available in Fortnite..

They apparently did it for Rise of Skywalker where Palpatine's speech to the galaxy was broadcast exclusively in Fortnite (I think, I don't play the game, I read it on Tvtropes which prides itself on not needing accountability). Not sure if that's standard practice for other franchises' characters or if that's something Lucasfilm/Disney hashed out.

  7. I did one back in January, I'll copy it here too (seems the Wit/Design shenanigans are a popular choice for a trailer scene).

I tried to avoid giving away too many spoilers in mine, so it's a bit vague. Adolin and Kaladin's scenes might edge a little close, but I feel the lack of context alleviates it a little (and the 'don't spoil stories' is just asking to be made into a trailer). I chose a random year for the release date, but I thought October 10th would be a good date, and it gets around the DDMMYY/MMDDYY issue.

    Spoilered for length

    Spoiler

FADE IN as a woman’s voice sings a note, pulsing in a stately rhythm. The camera soars over a field of rockbuds before arriving at a small town.

Refugees stumble as they move through a triage line towards a single surgeon and his assistants. Singer warforms keep an eye on them as Heavenly Ones float overhead.

A Singer suddenly steps out of formation to pull the hood off one of the refugees in line to reveal long black hair and a shash brand. KALADIN STORMBLESSED takes a moment before bursting into a beacon of Stormlight.

    CUT TO BLACK

VENLI follows LESHWI into the meeting of THE NINE as a different woman’s voice starts to sing a chaotic tune of discordant notes.

    LESHWI (VO)

Extinction is the natural escalation of this war.

Fused sneak through the caverns of Urithiru.

    LESHWI (VO)

Moash summons his Honorblade as he floats above Hearthstone.

CUT TO NAVANI sitting at her desk, studying various gemstones. The two women’s songs begin to merge into one, bursts of chaotic notes bounded by another, more regular voice regularly pulsing.

    You cannot fault their audacity.

Kaladin and Syl stand in Urithiru.

    KALADIN

It was a nice dream, wasn’t it Syl? That we could find peace at long last?

    SYL

    Such a wonderful dream.

Kaladin reaches out to touch the wall, but the frame cuts away before we see what he is doing.

    CUT TO:

WIT and DESIGN are sitting beside a campfire.

    WIT

    Don’t spoil stories!

    DESIGN

That’s stupid. The story is really long. He needs to hear the ending so he’ll know it’s worth listening all the way.

    WIT

That’s not how this works. It needs drama, suspense, surprise!

    DESIGN

    Blah blah blah blah blah!

    WIT

I have bonded a literal monster.

  8. It makes sense, but I don't think it's what happened. Combined with the abuse of his children, involvement with a dodgy organisation in the Ghostbloods and attempts to gain favour through his wealth (not to mention the actual Soulcaster, assuming it's not another fake like Jasnah's) I don't see why he wouldn't just get someone else to do it for him. He's clearly not all that interested in the welfare of people not named Shallan and is willing to use somewhat underhanded means to get what he wants, so I can definitely imagine that he would force someone to soulcast to the point that they suffer savanthood symptoms (assuming that they are doing it enough to reach that point).

  9. As the title suggests, I'm a little concerned about accidentally plagiarising ideas.

For example, I have plans with some of my projects that might edge a little too close to Shannara and Horizon Zero Dawn

    Spoiler

what with high fantasy stories taking place in a post apocalyptic world and treating AIs as if they were 'spirits/gods'.

What concepts would you consider to be inextricably linked with a particular work?

I recently discovered Bardcore and I have to say, I'm really enjoying this

I prefer bardcore songs without vocals, but this one is pretty good.

When I heard the Wellerman tiktok and its remix earllier this year I thought Shantycore might take it's place, but it's kind of died down.

The Wellerman (Sea Shanty) - From TikTok to Epic Remix - YouTube

There's also Morricore/Spaghetti Western remixes, but I've only seen one or two youtubers doing it (AC/DC - T.N.T. [Spaghetti Western version / Morricore] - YouTube)

Also, I keep finding my way back to this one

  11. I kind of agree the Taravangian wanted to be a saviour more than he wanted to actually save people.

    Infinity War/Endgame/general Cosmere spoilers:

    Spoiler

It's why I think he might end up winning, but people resist him so he chucks a tantrum and runs away from Roshar and tries to 'save' Scadrial, which leads to 'Trell' attacking the planet. If he brings Singers/Rosharan humans with him, it could lead to Scadrial to attack Roshar in turn. I'm sure wouldn't be the first time in history or fiction where a renegade faction of Group A is believed to be the same as the rest of Group A and the Group B attacks Group A directly.

  12. @CROSSENuUP @Quick Ben I've said before in other threads how problematic i think it is for Honor and Odium to become War. Also, I thought it was obvious that the Rhythm was called 'War' because the two who discovered it were on opposite sides of a war. Sort of like the Christmas soccer matches in the trenches of WW1, they came together despite their differences and will probably go right back to killing each other at the next opportunity.

As for the main point of the thread, Todd has already proven to be somewhat arbitrary with regards to other things. He considers himself a saviour despite sacrificing thousands as Taravangian before becoming a shard, and Odium's shtick of 'yeah nah I'm not the god of hate I'm actually the god of passion' means that the shard is possibly willing to pretend it is something it isn't.

As has been pointed out, Taravangian was able to become Odium on a day of pure emotion, and he has very few of those (i.e. not a 'passionate' person every moment of the day). I feel like he can be a generally sneaky bastard but keep his word when it counts and become Honor. Not super likely, but it's possible.

He doesn't even have to take up the shard. A well timed shanking can solve the problem without a shard being present, or he could just splinter the shard again.

  13. I'd argue that while Szeth's murders are way more numerous than Moash's, they are also far less personal.

    Also, here's a meme

  14. I'm debating whether to watch Shang Chi at all. I probably will because it's Marvel, but I'm kind of sick of people going on about how 'Marvel has an Asian lead in their movies now, so progressive!'

Meanwhile, said Asian lead is... the guy whose powers are 'kung fu'.

I know there's Colleen Wing, and May/Skye/Daisy from the TV side of things, but they've been doing their best to pretend the TV and movie side of things are completely unconnected up until Disney+. And Colleen isn't the title role of her show and the others are part of an ensemble cast and aren't defined by their martial arts abilities.

Why is everyone suggesting caucasian actors? Brando Sando said that none of the Rosharian races are caucasian. Here's a guide to what all the races are supposed to look like. Some of them are described as part white (like Shallan, who's half Irish and half Japanese), but none of them are completely white. I know you're used to most fantasy races people white, but that doesn't mean you can just ignore the canon races and pretend everyone's white. Don't whitewash them.

Pretty sure there's memes on either this site or Cremposting on reddit about 'when you hear people discussing which white dude they think should play Dalinar'.

I fall into that trap too sometimes (probably due to seeing Peter Jackson's LOTR at a young age), but I think I heard about the Asian/polynesian inspirations before I started Stormlight Archive and now my actors are set (although I still do imagine Vedens being closer to 'white').

  16. I'm nearly finished with LOK (S4E3) after rewatching ATLA.

I get why people were upset about the whitewashing of the characters in the live action movie, but it kind of annoys me that the animated series did pretty much the exact same thing and people just gloss over it. I can count a total of two main characters in ATLA voiced by Asian actors, and even then when Mako (Iroh) died he was replaced by a white dude whose accent kind of makes me cringe.

So far I feel like LOK suffers a little from not having a series-long arc like ATLA did, but I still really like it. I also like that the villains have their own understandable motivations beyond 'muahahaha EVIL'.

I think Thaidakar was not original Kelsiers

I think he co-opted an already existing title

Kalak says “Old Thaidakar has always wanted my secrets.” If it was kelsier why would 300 years be “always” Kalak has been alive for 7000 years that wouldn’t be a dent in his life also why does he call him ‘old’

So I think that there was a previous Thaidakar, who could have been Terris, that Kelsier has taken over that guys organization

I can definitely see what you're getting at, but I agree that 'old' doesn't necessarily mean 'old relative to me', and that 'always' can be from Thaidakar's side. I mean, depending on context 'old mate' in Australia can be analogous to 'check out this loser'. It's kind of funny to think Kalak meant 'old mate Thaidakar always wanted my secret and now he won't leave me alone'.

As for why Terris (Mistborn Spoilers)

    Spoiler

They could be interested in the applications of metals, as metals have effects on fabrials. The Terris might be more interested than Allomancers as this metal is outside their body, and external effects of metals might not be too interesting when you derive your power from metabolising them.

Also, Rashek's friends became mistwraiths and then kandra. The Lord Ruler may have sent some early kandra out before they developed the new kandra naming conventions, and named things in a Terris fashion. If the original Thaidakar (assuming there have been several) was one of the early kandra, then they would have appeared 1300 years prior to the current Stormlight Archive plot (using the 'Wax & Wayne' is set in the 15 year time skip + 300 years post-Catacendre + 1000 years of Final Empire). If I remember my WOBs right, there isn't a timeline for how long the kandra have been worldhoppers.

  19. One of the projects I'm working on has a magic system based on metaphorical aspects of elements (water, fire, air, earth, wood and metal). Basically, I'm worried I might have made some of them too OP.

Wood's associated aspect is Growth, and if you can imagine your desired effect in terms of Growth you can do whatever you want. I've imagined it being used for healing and resource regeneration among other things, but I'm worried it's too powerful.

I've put the following limits into the magic system as a whole:

    • Any effect requires great detail in the visualisation and intent of what you want to do (e.g. healing requires anatomical knowledge of what to grow, resource regeneration requires you to understand the structures of what you want to reproduce).
    • The element you are using must be present (because wood is about growth, you need to be around living plants).
    • The magic system at the beginning of the series does not allow any creation or control of the particular element in question. For example, Earth magic can't create or control earth or rock, but wood can grow it and air can move it. Later events remove this restriction, but that will also be the cause of some of the major conflict in the series.
    • Very few people are able to naturally perform this magic, and while objects can be enchanted to allow non-magic users to use it, those objects can only pass on the specific effect that was enchanted (e.g. if something allows blue dye to be multiplied, it only works for the specific shade of blue that was visualised when it was created. Broader effects require much more complicated enchanting).

Is this enough to not completely break the magic system? Alternatively, what other metaphorical aspects of wood can you suggest?
