  1. "I'm not cute like that, either."
  2. Val flushed, flustered, and pulled her hood up more, tucking her strawberry blonde hair away subconsciously. "I'm not cute," she said. "I'm more animal than human."
  3. "I became one when I was young. I don't know who any of you are and I've heard of no one named Concerto."
  4. Valerie closed her eyes. "Why does everyone see that I am an Amal and immediately at-attack me?" she asked, voice cracking. "I don't want this burden, okay?"
  5. Ammon looked back, smiled, and pretended to bow. "That was me, Ammon, leader of the Army of Children and sort of a child myself, proudly 16. Who are you?"
  6. "I don't know who you're talking about," Valerie said, speaking up. "I'm just a simple prey Amal."
  7. Valerie wrapped her arms around herself, trapped and worried.
  8. Dreri slowly calmed down, bleating softly. Using the calmness to her advantage, Val transformed back into an Amal human, ears and back showing. She pulled her jacket over her head and sat down, keeping her ankle in the same position and watching everyone else nervously.
  9. At the threats, the doe took control of Val and transformed, jacket falling off and shirt ripping in the back, but not enough to fall off.. The pants stayed on, but the deer stepped out of those. Or at least, tried to. The grip on her leg stayed, and Deiri struggled, but couldn't get out. Valerie pushed against the deer's mind, but the panicked deer held fast, leaving a frightened deer in pants and a shirt trying to run away.
  10. Valerie took a couple deep breaths. "Don't overwhelm me too much, or I'll go all Hulk on you. Deer might not be strong, but they're fast." "No, I work alone."
  11. One of the kids spoke up. "We're here of our own free will. We're here to help Ammon!" Another child looked at him. "Shhh," she said loudly, louder than him. This led to a bout of shushing from all around.
  12. Oh no. This time it was Val, not Dreri, thinking this. I don't have time for this. "Just leave me alone." Dreri fought against her mental restraints, yearning to take control, and Valerie was not going to be able to hold her back if something big happened.
  13. Val reached the exit and looked around. No one was watching. She slipped into an alleyway and down the passage, reaching the back of the inn. The near silence calmed her, and she took a deep breath, forcing the doe mind to be still.
  14. Great, Dreri said. Now one of them's seen us. We have to go. Val tried to ignore her, but the deer kept worrying. Fine. Val stood up and walked quickly towards the exit.
  15. Valerie observed the goings-on around her with a careful, quiet eye. We should run, Dreri said, and Val stood up, beginning to push back her hood to show her fuzzy ears and bring light to her hazel eyes. No, she thought, and stopped the instinct, pulling her hood to cover them again. She couldn't let it take control now. Not now, of all times.
  16. "I suppose. I'll educate the new kid."
  17. Sebarial shrugs. "If we need to, we have more teachers."
  18. Ammon looked around shiftily. "We aren't supposed to talk about our seller."
  19. My brother: I'm thirsty. Me: Hi, thirsty. I'm Friday. Do you want to come over on Saturday and have a Sunday?
