  1. A "mass effect blast"? Interesting. Definitely makes me think there are at least a few other magics in Dragonsteel. One of those other posts you linked to mentioned a "light-power girl", which is presumably Lightweaving. But... who knows. I'm wondering if the Sho Del Lightweaving operates the same as Hoid's Yolish Lightweaving. My gut says yes, but we didn't get any Hoid in those Birdge 4 chapters and his Lightweaving didn't get used in a similar way in the Liar of Partinel sample chapters. Pre-Shattering magic, at least on Yolen, seems to involve using your Cognitive aspect to affect either the Cognitive or Spiritual aspect of someone or something else- the Sho Del casting illusions directly into people's minds or the Tzai Blows shattering steel by shattering the spiritual aspect. Based on that, it kind of seems like a lot of those magics could be learned by anyone who has enough of a Cognitive presence. As illustrated by Jerick becoming a Tzai and already having microkinesis. I could be way off though.
  2. Yeah, I considered Vax. But, we only know that it has a magic, as you mentioned. Good call on the kite magic, I'll add that to my list. The Cognitive Ripples stumped me as well.
  3. Yup. The Tzai shows up in the last of the Bridge 4 chapters released from Dragonsteel Prime: https://www.brandonsanderson.com/dragonsteel-prime-chapter-37-bridge-four-7/ It's very likely that the redacted magic that gets mentioned in those chapters is microkinesis. I did see that in one of the other threads under Unpublished Works, but I unfortunately don't have a link to that handy. Both microkinesis and Tzai blows are mentioned in a few wobs: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/181/#e3812 https://wob.coppermind.net/events/385/#e12572 https://wob.coppermind.net/events/291/#e7825
  4. So, there are several magic systems that are considered canon, though they've not yet really been in a canon, published work. I wanted to list them out and see if anyone else knew of any more. I'm going to sort them into, basically, canon and made a cameo, canon but not in anything published, and probably canon but not confirmed. Canon with a Cameo -Yolish Lightweaving: made an appearance in the Stormlight books when Hoid used Lightweaving and needed Shallan's assistance (assuming that instance wasn't him using a different form of Lightweaving) -Aethers: smaller cameo in Stormlight, as a pinkish crystal and as a blood/oil like substance on some clothing Canon but no Published Appearances (both mentioned in WoBs and in the Bridge 4 chapters of Dragonsteel that were released on Brandon's website) -Tzai Blows -Microkinesis Quasi-canon -Disease magic of Ashyn: this one seems to depend on Brandon getting the magic system figured out and finding time for Silence Divine -Kite magic: mentioned by Brandon as the magic in a potential YA book, where Hoid’s apprentice needs to learn the magic Are there any I'm missing? Edit: Edited to add the kite magic
  5. Which is totally possible! So far, I'm of the opinion that Odium made at least some of his own spren, such as Ulim. Helps ensure more loyalty than corruption, if the relative freedom Glys seems to have is any indication.
  6. To me, the difference is of origin. Glys is a regular spren whose investiture was forcibly corrupted (as far as we know). So Glys is not completely of Odium. On the other hand, we have the Voidspren like Ulim. They seem to originate with Odium and were not corrupted to be of Odium. I think it's Voidspren like Ulim that would allow a Nahel style bond that grants full Voidbinding.
  7. I'm sure this is a not uncommon theory, but I believe that Renarin is both a Surgbinder and a Voidbinder. The corruption of Glys allows him access to the Surge of Regrowth and the Voidish Surge of Illumination. That's why he can see the future instead of create illusions. It is manifesting differently. This would also fit in with how Brandon dances around confirming if Renarin is Voidbinding. As far as I can tell, the core ability of the overlapping Surges work the same way for each order- for example, the Windrunners and Skybreakers both use Gravitation in the same manner. Now, the Bondsmiths do seem to be an exception to this, but they seem to be the odd order out in a lot of ways. I think then, by extension, bonding one of Odium's sapient spren could make someone a true Voidbinder, granting two Voidish surges. It's probably not something Odium ever had his spren try. But, perhaps after learning of Venli and Timbre, he'll start trying it with his troops. What do you all think? Am I wildly off base?
  8. It's an interesting idea, certainly. I can see how the investiture behind Ashyn's diseases would be related to Autonomy. Not a guarantee that there is an avatar on Ashyn though. Brandon has mentioned that all investiture was assigned to a shard, post-Shattering. But, I think the parallels with Taldain and First of the Sun are interesting enough that it is certainly a possibility.
  9. I can see another version of the Sserin powers working on some random cosmere world. My thoughts would be to remove the oath portion, weaken the powers, and remove the concentration/dispersion aspect. Essentially, I think a workable version would have powers similar to the cognitive and spiritual powers of allomancy, feruchemy, and the Aviars and work via inheritance. My limitation would be that it is inherited via the mother. In the real world, mitochondrial DNA is handed down via a maternal line while DNA has a ton of junk inserted from historical viruses and bacteria. An example would be a family line who can shift heat like a feruchemist. But, that shifting is still done by the body's heat, so push out too much heat and you go into hypothermia. Just a thought experiment for getting a workable(ish) version on a minor Shardworld. I also would not be opposed to another non human character who repeatedly insists that it is human. What can I say, that amused me greatly.
  10. The cosmere is a large and diverse universe and features a variety of sapient species, appropriately given the scale. I wanted to sort them by pre and post shattering of Adonalsium. I'll have my rationale for any that might be a controversial pick for either side on this time scale. Curious to see if others agree with how I sort them out. And if I've missed any, please let me know! Pre-Shattering Humans- one of the original three species that lived on Yolen and basically everywhere we know of in the cosmere. Dragons- the second of the three species of Yolen. We've gotten a letter from one dragon on screen, but know from WoBs that they predate the shattering. Sho Del- the third and final species from Yolen. We've seen none "on screen" as far as we know, but Brandon has confirmed their existence via WoB. Singers- the original inhabitants of Roshar, a world that Adonalsium directly designed and created. While it is possible they were added later via Honor and Cultivation, I find it unlikely given the overall designed nature of Roshar. Sleepless- potentially a controversial pick for pre-shattering. As far as I know, we don't know where the Sleepless are from, though they are obviously associated with Roshar. The limited information we have does not give me reason, currently, to think they are a post-shattering addition to the cosmere. Post Shattering Humans (Scadrians)- created by Ruin and Preservation using the humans of Yolen as the design. It's a technicality to include them as post-shattering, but they were technically made after. "True" Spren- while spren definitely existed pre-shattering, it's suggested that the sapient spren emerged later, after Honor and Cultivation arrived. I believe that the first of each of the varieties of true spren Hemalurgic Constructs- I'm going to lump them altogether here, the kandra, koloss, Inquisitor, and chimera (not sure honestly if the chimera would really still count as sapient. Our scarce details suggest not, but they were modified humans). Made post-shattering through Ruin's magic, hemalurgy. Siah Aimians- a controversial pick for post-shattering. I have them here as I believe they are the children of spren and humans. Being partially cognitive entities would explain the direction of their shadows and the partial shapeshifting that they display. Axies' ability to "write" on his skin reminds me of Vasher's abilities as a Returned as well as the implications of the Royal Locks. I could be wildly wrong on this one, we've little information on them. Awakened Constructs- so far, this includes Nightblood and, potentially, Lifeless. Azure's sword may also fall under this category. Seon/Skaze- made from investiture from Devotion's and Dominion's shattering. Cognitive Shadows- I'm just going to lump all the cognitive shadows we know of under this heading- Returned, Heralds, Fused, etc. We don't know of any pre-shattering shadows, though it may have been possible. Rhyshadium- Khriss labeled them as near sapient, so good enough for me to include them here.
  11. I think a hemalurgist also has a good chance, if given preparation. Especially of they are a worldhopper, since hemalurgy works everywhere and can steal most things. I would think a clever hemalurgist would carry multiple spikes and not necessarily have them all inserted at once. Then, mix and match powers beforehand and even during a fight. Some examples: Use F-gold and A-gold to compound healing, then keep in just the feruchemical spike to drawn on that well of healing. Compound bendalloy filled with water/hydration, keep the feruchemical spike and then combine it with sand mastery for practically limitless usage. Then use a ribbon of sand to aim for the Shardplate visor and thrash it about inside. Now, admittedly, I doubt a hemalurgist would beat a Radiant. Radiants have a ton of raw power at their disposal. Just musing that a clever hemalurgist could do some interesting things.
  12. Reading through this thread, that's exactly what I started thinking as well. Their human appearance with some malleable features. They don't seem to have full shapeshifting like the kandra. They definitely have that cognitive connection, with their shadows pointing towards light. There are wobs that imply that romantic relationships happened between Knights Radiant of old and their spren. It's not a stretch to think that humans and spren living in the cognitive realm would have fallen in love. But it wouldn't be all that common. Though it happened perhaps enough to establish a small group of quasi-immortal group that lived in Aimia... Basically, I'm onboard with this theory on the origins of the Siah Aimians. Still think that the Dysian Aimians are not from Roshar.
  13. The shades are able to spread and, arguably, reproduce. If a shade kills someone, that person becomes a shade. Plus, they are attracted to ambitious behavior- spilling blood, setting fires, running. Those can arguably all be seen as ambitious behaviours. It's unclear if other behaviors would fall under this. Maybe the shades are attracted to sources of investiture, like say a pipeline of the Dor. Pure speculation there. There's also a question of what the shades are like in the Cognitive Realm. They could somehow be more dangerous there, if they're not stretched as thinly across all 3 realms.
  14. It depends in how we are defining shardblade, I would think. If a shardblade is merely a heavily invested weapon, then a feruchemically charged sword totally fits that bill. As you all have said, fill iron with weight, alloy it to make steel, and top off the steel with speed. If we're defining a shardblade as a weapon made from sentient investiture, then it might be possible to use the metallic arts to make one. The best post I saw on this subject was here: The short version is to use compounding to store vast quantities of strength, determination, investiture, etc. Then, use the stored investiture to turbo charge the traits as they're withdrawn, while storing most of your own identity in a spare metalmind. Use all of this to convince yourself that you are the strongest, sharpest sword in the universe. And then store that sword identity in an aluminum sword, also turbo charging with nicrosil while storing. The original post explains it better than I do.
  15. I suspect that the Fused take over bodies because that's how Odium designed it when he made them into the Fused. I could be wrong, but I'm betting it is not inherently necessary for a Cognitive Shadow to take over a physical body in order to form a bond with a person. Theoretically, the differences between spren and cognitive shadows are in origin, as both are sentient pieces of pure investiture. They both seem to need a way to anchor themselves in order to interact in the physical realm. We've seen spren do that through the Nahel bond, we've seen Seons and Skaze do it through their lighter bonds, the Heralds do it through the Oathpact, the Fused by taking over bodies, and Returned do it through divine breath. It's suspected that Kelsier used hemalurgy to anchor himself. It should be possible then that we can mix and match. A cognitive shadow should be able to form a Nahel bond or something extremely like it, just as a Seon should be able to.
  16. My two wild theories are: 1. That at least one or more of the Dawnshards were meant for terraforming planets. Which would give them a terrifying amount of power if used in any other way- such as accidentally devastating Ashyn. 2. Lerasium creates turbo charged Connection to Shards. By itself, it gives Connection to Preservation which grants allomancy. When alloyed with atium, it grants feruchemy. Now, if that second part is true, it would mean that lerasium alloyed with other god metals would give someone a metallic art that is half Preservation and half that other Shard, essentially allowing for 16 different metallic arts.
