  1. "Righty, Allera! See if you can get the other ship on the comms."
  2. "Shush, I said." Ayia glanced out the window at the other ship. "Kay, actually, answer this: can we leave? Or is your ship still holding us out of hyperspace?"
  3. "No. Or not yet, at least. Still haven't decided."
  4. "Right, then. I guess we won't kill you yet."
  5. "Alright. Then you can sit down for now. You said you're not trying to blow us up?"
  6. "So you don't have any earpieces or whatever?"
  7. "What do you mean, 'depends?' Yes or no."
  8. There's a mine in Centralia, Pennsylvania that has been on fire since 1962.

It's a coal mine, from back in ye olde days before we'd figured out just how bad for the environment coal could be. The company had cut a bunch of costs by stripping out the coal and dumping it illegally throughout the area, which eventually caught the attention of the Centralia Council who ordered it all to be cleaned up at once.

These dumps were historically quite the fire hazard, which is probably what prompted them to dispose of the landfills via a controlled burn. Long story short, it didn't turn out well, and a few carbon monoxide tests later showed that the underground was, in fact, quite on fire.

You might wonder how a fire can burn underground for so long, and the answer is that they're just burning reeeeeeally slowly. There's enough(ish) oxygen down in the deep for the coal to slowly smoulder into ashes, expelling the fumes to make just enough room for more oxygen. And if you're skeptical, then just go on by where the town used to be and find some rocks in a field - I did, several years back, and you can indeed feel the heat coming out from the fire.

And these coal-seam fires aren't just in Pennsylvania - there are tons in China, New Zealand, Europe, etc. Centralia's just the most famous and longest-burning.

Or, at least, that's what I thought. Curious, I looked up "longest-burning fire," expecting ol' Centralia to get at least top three - but what I found wasn't a list. It was a singular, undebated fact:

Burning Mountain, Australia, is so-named because it has been on fire for -

    - I shrimp you not -

    Six. Thousand. Years.

      …what? Six thousand— what?

about the mine though, I’m currently reading the Red Queen series which takes place in a post-apocalyptic USA (mostly the east coast)/Canada, and those mines are mentioned multiple times actually

  9. "Can you still communicate with whoever's piloting it?"
  10. "Do you have any bombs? I could go over there and stick a bomb on them."
  11. "Not you. Now shush."
  12. "You: shut up. I'm talking to the captain."
  13. "Allera, go ahead and blow up the other ship."
  14. "There are two of you?"
  15. "You're the ones who pulled us out of hyperspace."
  16. "In charge. What makes you think you can just shoot at us like that?"
  17. Was... the intruder trying to talk? In a vacuum? Ayia shut the airlock and let the air flood back in. She kept her suit on for the time being - honestly, he could've at least been kind enough to let her hop out into open space for a minute to try and catch him. "Who are you?" She demanded, once sound was capable of propagating.
  18. Ayia, for the record, was in her late-ish twenties*. A rather confused, twenties-ish*-year-old sort of lady. Was the guy who had just been shooting at them asking to be invited in? She diffused the airlock, opened the door, then grabbed him by the throat to pull into the ship.
  19. Ayia took issue with being see as a child. She wasn't even sure where this impression came from.
  20. Fact:

Castle in the Sky is STILL the best movie on the face of the planet

I went and saw it IN THEATERS today (Ghibli Fest - yay!). Fact 2: there are two english translations of the movie. There's the original version for its initial release, and another one distributed by Disney for monee reasons. The second is the one you'll find pretty much anywhere, so I figured that was the one we'd be getting for the theater showing.

  21. Well... if he doesn't have to breathe... "Fine." Ayia stepped into the airlock, bringing out the end of her Line. "Allera! Imma go punch that javaksadoibr." It was probably a regional swear that didn't translate well.
  22. "Can you punch things? Like, are you physically capable of punching things?"
  23. "I don't know. I don't know, Ari..." Paprika took in a breath. A deep breath. Calm down. Control yourself. "I... they submitted too quick. Something had to have happened. Either we wanted to show our resolve to an ally, or..." We were coerced by some other threat.
  24. "Well, that is my job."
  25. Paprika's wristbank bleeped again: three flashes, meaning it was a public announcement. She beamed it to Ghost and Ari, as well as the others in her contacts. It was a single message from the Chairman of the United Worlds. We're in.
