  1. She bounced up on her toes and suppressed a happy squeak.
  2. There was a foolish grin on her face as Wendy strode home; like right now was a little moment of perfection amidst of a sea of bad.
  3. "Agreed." She replied with a smile. Ivian hated parties; especially ones in his honor. Baron Coltenne was celebrating an approved marriage and subsequent trade deal between his estate and Countess Nienne's. Ivian had skimped on the details because he frankly didn't care, as the two noble houses had worked out the fine print themselves. All he'd been needed for was giving his blessing on the marriage: something he'd really rather had done from his study, if that had been an option. Part of him wondered if he should change the law that required him to be there in person, but he doubted the clergy would go for it. He was currently locked in a dull conversation with the Countess's son, whose older sister was to be married in a few weeks. The teen's name was Eustace, and he was essentially rattling off textbook examples of how to 'gain favor' of the higher-ups. Ivian suppressed a yawn and made a mental note to forget about this sorry excuse for a noble as soon as humanly possible. Eustace was currently talking about livestock, for some reason. "I consider myself quite the accomplished equestrian, you see. So I--" "I'm sorry." Ivian suddenly interrupted, holding up a hand. "But I just remembered another pressing meeting that I must return to my palace for." "Ah! I'll escort you to your carriage, then." Ivian sighed.
  4. "In a few months I'll have plenty of free time." Wendy replied. "But we might have to do it back at the castle, 'cause I probably won't be able to go much of anywhere."
  5. "I'd love to." Wendy replied, a little sadly. "But y'know... work and all that."
  6. Wendy reached her hand across the table and patted his. "Thanks."
  7. "Aw!" She blushed. "Nico, you sweetie."
  8. The corner of Wendy's mouth perked up. "If he doesn't, though, then you'll have a lot of scrubbing to do."
  9. "Well..." She pushed her hair back. "I mean, first of all I have to get back and make sure that Arabella and Katie are at least pretending to be asleep, then figure out who's going to do this massive load of laundry some drunks dropped on us, assign someone to wait the King's 'welcome home' feast that he really doesn't need to have, go make sure that Ingrid didn't break her leg too badly, and eventually get some sleep."
  10. "No, Nico, it's..." She let out a breath. "Y'know? Maybe we should stop talking about the nasty tragic stuff that's happened to the two of us. It's really... awkward."
  11. Wendy looked up. "If you were a girl, Nico, then you'd be in my situation right now." Her hand was still on her stomach.
  12. "O--oh." Wendy swallowed and set her spoon down.
  13. She let out a huff. "Oh, come on, Nico. Maybe I don't know you that well but I know that when you say something's fine that it probably is not."
  14. Wendy looked up. "What? Did you think I was asking about something else?"
  15. "Kay." Wendy's gaze became a little distant as her hand reached down to her stomach. "I think she'll be a girl."
  16. Wendy chuckled. "Is that a girl name or a boy name?" She didn't ignore what he said before, though.
  17. "You always tell me not to worry about things but that just makes me worry more."
  18. "I'm just..." Wendy looked down. "Sorry."
  19. He heroically fled to reserve the Raveness and some random Praetorium guard a room. "If you had to name a kid," Wendy asked Nicolae, somewhat conspicuously, "how do you think you'd do it?"
  20. "I can, umm..." The serving boy cleared his throat. "I can get you a, um... a room. And some waitresses."
  21. "Likely tonight or early tomorrow morning. If you're looking for Nicolae, then he should be back before then."
  22. The room was guarded by two men, but the king wasn't in there. "His Majesty is at the Coltenne Estate," one of them said. "If you wish I can direct you to one of his advisors."
  23. He paled a bit. "I thought you got fired."
