“Help is good. Murder is bad. Try to keep them alive, okay? I want to know what this group is doing going around and kidnapping kids for.”

“Any particular skills? Combat experience? Weird magic?”

Fadran cleared his throat. “Anyways. We’re working on the portal right now. While we’re waiting, who’s up for going?”

“The Inn’s on high alert now,” Fadran replied. “If Rayvyn here tried to hurt someone, they’d be exorcised immediately.”

“It means they likely don’t have any way to really use him yet. He’ll probably just be their prisoner until they figure something out - which will also probably be difficult in the time frame I forced on them.”

“What I meant was that if they were as big and important as he seemed to believe, then they would’ve taken their time trying to find and capture him. Infiltrate this place, get close to us, pick an opportune moment, then vanish without a trace. But instead they were messy, and now we’re on their tail. Hence—“ Fadran held up a finger, “he was bluffing.”

“Power and resources are two very different things. With power you can come into someone’s base and demand a hostage; with resources you can spend time making sure your plan to get that hostage is airtight.”

“Frankly, I doubt they have the resources.”

“Oh. I guess I didn’t tell you… he said something about being in a multiverse organization. Kind of like here, but with less of an emphasis on… being nice.”

“Hm? His connection stuff?” Fadran shrugged. “I try not to egg him about it. His magic is a lot less set and solid than the likes of mine.” He fell silent for a moment. ”If it means anything,” he added, more softly, “this organization… I don’t think they’ll be doing anything right away.”
