  1. opinion from an actual straightn't.

yes, i am a big proponent of more LGBTQ+ main characters, but I understand where brandon is coming from. I am also a mormon, and I've gone from not knowing gay people exist, to being pretty homophobic (but i swore i wasn't. spoiler alert: i w a s) to realizing that i would like a girlfriend as much as i'd want a boyfriend, maybe even more. as mormonism can be pretty homophobic, i usually wouldn't really trust a (straight) mormon to write a gay character, but it's clear that brandon is trying to walk a fine line between lack of representation and inaccurate representation. in conclusion: yeah i want a gay main character, but it probably won't happen for a while and im ok with that.

  2. (fade from black into the set of the first chapter. ALCATRAZ is strapped to an altar of outdated encyclopedias with a masked executioner standing over him)

    (record scratch)

    (freeze frame)

ALCATRAZ. (voice-over) Yup, that's me. I bet you're wondering how I got into this situation. Well, let me start from the beginning...

(epic music as the camera zooms out to reveal the title screen. The title shatters and the camera zooms back into ALCATRAZ'S home)

ALCATRAZ. (voice-over) I've had bad luck since I was born, for example, my name is Al. Under normal circumstances, that would have been an okay name, but my parents must have had a cruel sense of humor. My name isn't Alfred or Alfonzo or even Allison. My name is Alcatraz. Alcatraz Smedry.

    (ALCATRAZ stops doing a voice-over)

ALCATRAZ. (he holds a lightbulb in his hands carefully. The lightbulb explodes) Whoops.

  3. cytonics are a form of delver. Delvers are at first estimated to be the size of a small planet, then shown to be much smaller. My theory is that spensa, doomslug, alanik, and the other cytonics are some form of delver.  Evidence: being a cytonic is an inherited power; cytonics have a strange connection to the delvers; and m-bot's 'inhuman' comment

morrimor is baby and i will protect them with my life

i knew cuna was just trying to make spensa more comfortable and utterly failing at it

alanik is pretty encompasses half a page

  4. Dragon Rider, by Cornelia Funke, is a novel about some dragon and some kid doing things I guess. I have a lot to say about it.

first off, you'd think that a literal dragon created through a failed alchemical experiment who has basically hunted the entire species dragon species to eXTINCTION would not be defeated by some cat thing spitting on something and some CHILD dragons breathing fire on it. The villain was defeated too easily for all the "oooooh see how sCaRy he is" that made up like 46% of the book.

second of all, okay wHAT are these names???? Ben makes sense for a human boy, but Rat is a rat character's name. greenbloom???? that'S NOT A HUMAN LAST NAME. also zubiedia the dracologist? I remember her being human, so I can complain about her. DRACOLOGIST IS NOT A THING! IT'S E X P L I C I T L Y SAID HUMANS DON'T KNOW DRAGONS ARE REAL! WHY WOULD YOU NEED A FIELD OF STUDY ON SOMEONE WHO WASN'T REAL

I liked the "dragons need moonlight to fly thing" but the moondew made that not even worth putting in. IF YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE A THING THAT BEATS YOUR OWN MAGIC SYSTEM'S RULES, DON'T MAKE THE RULE YOU'RE BREAKING A RULE!

during the middle of the book, some sea serpent exposition-dumped about the villian. why? please don't

characters were unbelievable and either 1) too perfect 2) evil for the sake of being evil. or in the case of sorrel, COMPLETLY UNLIKABLE

also the only reason the villain existed in this book was because the main character was an absolute idiot

in summary: the book is like OMG DRAGON!!!1!!! to distract you from the fact that it doesn't stand on its own without dragons.

First and foremost, does he have to have held or observed the object before being able to summon it or is it more like "I want this thing" so the universe creates it and sends it to him?

short answer: just need to know what the thing is, and how to describe it. Long answer: he’s kinda just like is like “void give me this thing” and the universe just yeets at him. It’s kind of confusing, i’ll explain the magic system later, but without too much explanation my world has this “in-between space” and the deity thing that lives there is a hoarder.

Second, how far does the "death circle" reach? Meaning does it reach only sentient beings (including insects and such) or does it go all the way to the atomic level? Could he use his power to remove harmful bacteria in the food he's about to eat kind of a thing?

the circle of murder-death stops at about a fruitfly because he has absolutely no idea how to make it not like that (he’s not the sharpest crayon in the box). Yes, he can concentrate it to go to smaller things and smaller distances, he just hasn’t figured it out yet.

  6. ok so, I have a character (his name is Sage Myllen) who has powers of summoning and vanishing, and there is (almost) no limit to what his magic can summon/vanish (yes, he does magic like, 'is this your card, etc'). I've added a weakness, but it still feels a bit to OP (probably because of the fact the weakness hinges on one of his character traits). If Sage uses too much of his powers, it seriously injures and possibly kills every living thing in a five-foot radius, excluding himself, things too small to see, and anyone he's touching (and no, you can't make a human chain. It needs to be direct contact), this is a problem to him because he's a pacifist, and literally refuses to hurt a fly. I know the amount of magic he has to use to "turn on" the murder magic, but he doesn't, and it (figuratively) drives him crazy the whole story. I'm just wondering if there is anything I should add/subtract to make it so that if he's still not too OP, or if there are any critiques you have of the character.
