    Malevolence just smiled at her. A large container appeared next to him, edges frosted with ice.

    "What are you doing, switching them all out for one another?" Malevolence snorted. "Perhaps your unique being allows for it, but it's still frankly ridiculous to assume one can just grab Nullite that's lying around and become an Ennuller." He stood, and a part of him was glad that Balitan was gone. Killing him would have been difficult, with Redemption forcing him to feel these emotions.

    Malevolence's crown vibrated in harmony with the power of Death Omen, white sparks flashing to briefly reveal a fragmented crystalline halo hovering above Malevolence's head. Malevolence saw his death. Not a certain doom, but a death of Redemption. Instead of sacrificing Balitan, he could turn Darkseeker upon himself. The ritual would be completed, the Witherlord summoned into a body already impaled by a Mordite blade. The Mantle could be shattered, the Witherlord's looming threat defeated forever. He felt the Thread's rejoicing, he saw the joy and relief and felt it all, and knew that it was good. Malevolence shook himself from the vision and spun, slashing at Eden with his dark dagger. "It won't." Malevolence said with a firmness he could no longer feel. "I am evil. No Plotblade can change that fact." He cut the orb free again and began moving toward Balitan. The third Author would speak soon, he was certain of it.

    The darkness diverted in its path, instead shooting upwards and opening a path for Malevolence to ascend back to the surface. "We have had this fight before, Fog. It did not end well for you then, and neither will it do so now." Malevolence frowned, though he could not help but admire Inkwell's bravery. "You? Why would I sacrifice you? Why would you assume that would work?" Excellent job, Charnyx. Keep him distracted. The ritual is nearly completed. Malevolence heard Rebyl's question, and amid a shimmer of sparks from his crown, he... felt her emotions. It was odd. Feeling horror at his own actions, feeling intensely that it was... wrong. In an instant, the moment passed. "Because I will be the greatest evil there has ever been!" He bellowed in answer. The words sounded hollow to his ears. That final Author had better speak soon. Malevolence thought grimly. This blade is getting to me.

    Malevolence cut the sphere free with disdain, then surrounded himself with a sphere of his own. Cracks formed in the ground beneath Fog, jets of darkness shooting forth from them.

    Malevolence staggered, struggling to withstand the onslaught. "At last, the forces of good have arrived. In vain you shall struggle, for my triumph is certain." Holding one hand against a wall, Malevolence summoned Antagonist. The black crown appeared on his head in a form not dissimilar to that which it had taken when wielded by Rebus. The same, actually, save for a quiet flickering of white sparks, playing between the crown's tips. Immediately, Malevolence straightened. The barrage of images and emotions ceased, rebuffed by the Plotblade's power. The villain smiled. "Is that the best you can do?" He pointed Darkseeker, and a wave of liquid darkness sprung forth towards Egis. Even as he did this, however, a new emotion entered Malevolence's mind. Regret. Regret and sorrow, for what he would give up. Malevolence frowned. Regret? He'd dealt with this already. Surely... It struck him. Antagonist and Redemption are one. I cannot use Antagonist without allowing Redemption to grasp at my soul, attempting to drag me into the light. Malevolence gritted his teeth. It was a risk he would have to take. His devotion to evil was strong. Redemption would not overcome it. As the flood receded, Balitan stood where he'd been before. Around him was a cage of calm and pure darkness, powered by a device the scientist held close to his chest. Malevolence pointed Darkseeker at Fog's heart, standing confidently between the Mordite. "Did you think I would leave my sacrifice unguarded? Cricket left me with two Ennulling batteries, and I only had to use one of them while fighting Bacon."

    Malevolence watched him approach, an amused look on his face. “Brave of you to die so willingly for the cause.” sorry all, but I have to go to bed early tonight. I’m serving at church tomorrow.

    "Indeed he did." Malevolence said. That was about as far as he got before the ocean's worth of water slammed into him. Malevolence struck out with Darkseeker, splitting the waters around him, black liquid h. "Water?" He called, voice somehow audible through the ocean. "This is what you bring against me?"

    Malevolence stared at the Blade in his hand. A part of him wished merely to discard it, but... he would wait until he was the Witherlord. He dismissed the Plotblade, whatever its name. Instead, he drew Darkseeker. Amid lightning's thunder and the pouring of rain, Malevolence began the ritual. Balitan appeared on the mountaintop, held captive by Malevolence's technology. The sacrifice had arrived. Malevolence looked to the skies with Mordite blade bared, and waited. Here rested his plan entire. If the Authors denied him, then all his planning was for naught. He waited, staring into the clouds, and... A voice spoke. For a time, the sun rises and burns, For a time life writhes and flourishes. Yet in the end the night comes, And all will be brought to dust. Lord of the Dark, we call thee! King of the Fallen, we speak thy name! Prince of the Twisted path, we summon thy power! This world shall be yours once more! @TwinStorm

    What question is that? Malevolence's hand lowered to Darkseeker, but he did not yet draw his Blade. -- Balitan whistled as he worked. The isolation operations were back up and running, better than ever. Rebus would no doubt be pleased, and- A box appeared on the table in front of Balitan. He noticed the screen, eyes widening, and lunged for the earplugs resting behind him. Too late was his lunge. The screen flickered on, revealing Malevolence's face. "Brain in a box." The villain said. Instantly, Balitan's muscles froze. He could do nothing but watch and listen as Malevolence's recording spoke, giving orders that his body followed of its own volition. -- Unintelligible narrowed his eyes. "So you won't help us."

    "Speak of the devil." murmured Malevolence. He stood, stretched, and climbed the remaining distance to the mountain's peak. "Hello Rebus. My apologies for abandoning you. Do you have an answer to my question?" Malevolence snorted. "I am on the wrong end of the cliff for that reference to make sense." "...Do you believe it can be stopped?"

    “Curiosity. You’ve managed to achieve great power in a very short time, in total secret. I’m impressed, and want to know how you did it.” “No. I am waiting for the correct Authors to be ready. I believe Rebus managed to discover this place’s location, and may have set defenses against me. I wait, that I do not steal this victory unfairly.”

    Malevolence eyed the final ascent. Then he sat down on the wet stone to wait. “How did you get Narration? If not from Ribbon, then where?”

    “It is not waiting for me.” Malevolence said quietly, voice barely audible above the storm. “I will be the Witherlord or I will die trying. There is no alternative.”

    “I do not give it up for power. And I will not be forgotten or defeated-certainly not quickly.” Malevolence looked up. Above him was a nearly vertical section of stone, a last challenge before the summit. ”I could purify you, once I am the Witherlord. If you wish it, it could be done.”

    “Hm.” Malevolence considered. “You refuse his aid in purifying you. Why?”

    “Clever.” Malevolence said with genuine conviction. “Did you convince Ribbon to give you the other half of her core?”

    Malevolence half-chuckled, half-grunted as he pulled himself upwards. “Is your Author aware that reading reality is not generally a withergeist skill?”

    “Simple. To prove myself the most worthy of the Witherlord mantle.” Malevolence’s grip slipped, nearly sending him on a one-way trip to the bottom of the mountain. He grunted, recovering himself and climbing to a more stable position. “The Lost Page is in a Nullite cylinder, buried in a vault beneath the cabin in which I met Cricket, Bat, and Tam for the first time. Well, buried beneath the crater, actually. I had to use a backup plan.” He smiled, giving no indication in body language, manner of speech, or mind of the utter and complete lie he was telling.

    Not really. But I do believe I remember it happening a while ago. (Like, shortly after I joined the Thread. Edit: oh, that was pretty much the first plot I started. It was fun.

    Yep, I guess we have. Malevolence saw the Withergeists, swirling along with the storm. Or was the storm swirling along with them? He picked himself up and continued the climb.

    Malevolence noted the group below him, but continued his ascent. The rainfall was growing heavier now, slicking the rocks and making each step more treacherous than before. Lightning struck nearby as Malevolence heaved himself to the top of a narrow rock shelf, where he decided to rest a moment before continuing. He sat down on the damp stone and looked to the sky, admiring the roiling tempest above. Perhaps a third of the way to the top. He thought. I'll take my time. Let those who would oppose me prepare in vain. Let the Authors watch in horror or glee. I will ascend this mountain, and from its summit ascend to that of evil.
