  1. By this time, the stool was long gone, forgotten along with all the other insignificant side characters.
  2. Lark pulled an object out of his pocket examining it casually. “Why this dimension? Why not, say, some other dimension? One that is not undergoing so much strife.”
  3. “You can talk to souls in this dimension, you’re doing it right now.”
  4. “The soulless have access to plenty of space outside of this dimension. Or none, depending on your point of view.”
  5. “Would you have the treaty changed?”
  6. “A treaty, of course. As is the case with most dimensions.”
  7. “If it isn’t Thaidakar. Tell me, what brings a Soulless such as yourself to this clinic?”
  8. Lark cleared his throat, leaning against the wall behind Thaidakar.
  9. And those ingredients had been lost for years.
  10. The stool disappeared from his hands, turning into mist.
  11. As well as an extremely painful event in and of itself.
  12. Lark nodded. “Glad I could help. If you don’t need me for anything else, I’ll be going now. I have a lot of work to do setting up my new program.”
  13. The damaged portion was regrowing, revealing Calano’s signature, unmarred by Lark’s.
  14. “Nothing.” Lark spun the treaty around and shoved it over to Emma. “Look at it.”
  15. Then the wrongness faded, and Bookwyrm knew that he needed to leave the room, and the useless stool.
  16. Lark cut his and Calano’s signatures out of the contract, then stuffed that piece of paper into his coat.
  17. “Yes. This method will definitely kill me. My death would not come from the backlash of the contract, that would be survivable at worst. It would come from the removal of my signature. Any method of removal I know of, no matter how gentle, would kill me. I made the writing unerasa-“ lark paused suddenly, looking down at the treaty. “Do either of you have a pair of scissors?”
  18. The thread itself beckoned Bookwyrm away, promising that the fulfillment of the prophecy was just around the corner.
  19. “Yes, I’m aware. I wasn’t Flagged, although I did trip three of the Authenticators. Backpedaling to the co-axial connection, what method does the form use for breaking it? I wasn’t aware that such a feat was possible, at least not safely.”
  20. But it was just an ordinary, inanimate stool. Nothing odd or interesting about it. Bookwyrm really should get back to finding Eof and doing his part to save the universe.
