Aln sprinted through the back door, inhaled stormlight fueling the flight. A quick glance behind revealed that her only pursuers were members of the guild - and her heart twisted when she realized that the creatures were therefore targeting the Guild itself. You can't just abandon your library! cried a voice within her mind. That's your life's work. What else do you have if you leave? With a shock, she realized that this opinion was based off of the fake memories in her head. I can't trust my own mind, she realized, and that thought scared her more than the monsters behind her. The adrenaline and stormlight in her system overpowered the rising disorientation, though, and she continued running toward the street as fast as she could, not daring to spare another glance behind. @kenod

Out of the corner of her eye, Aln saw a shape move around the desk. Immediately she flicked the flashlight to its highest setting, aiming it at the creature's face. The words in the air around it revealed her mistake, and she lowered the beam of light. Behind Everest, she could now see pieces of the battle - and pieces of the wreckage that her library was fast becoming. If she ran, it would mean abandoning her guild, her life's work. What else would she have? "Your library isn't everything," came Pel's voice, sounding concerned. "What about your friends? Torenat?" For a moment two sets of memories clashed within her head. Finally, painfully, she nodded. Running could also aid in revealing the purpose of this attack, she thought, trying to justify her decision. If they pursue us, that means that we're the targets, not the guild. Still, as she signalled her affirmative to Everest and began to sprint toward the rear door, she couldn't help but feel a coward. @kenod

I don't think it would mesh super well with the current plot/era. The idea was to run a plot mainly for non-combative characters, such as the members of the SG. It would be a mystery, probably following the trail of either Aln (?) or some other character in an investigation. The information received would depend on the points put into scholarship and intelligence.
-
Both of these options seem interesting to me, and I'd be generally open to whatever happens. I voted for Fatebreaker's plot mainly for selfish reasons - the first being that a guild-centered plot would reasonably involve the scholar's guild, and Aln's committed to a bunch of stuff this era. The second reason is much more vague: I had an idea for a plot to run that I'd be interested in, and I was looking forward to proposing it as an option next era - and the guild plan might take longer than just running with the main plot. Both of those reasons are mainly just related to me, though, so don't weight my vote too heavily.

Aln crouched beneath her desk, breathing hard, staring at the grain of the wood. From her hiding spot, she could see nothing of the ongoing battle, and of course she could not hear a thing. Nevertheless, she felt a shudder resound through the floor at the impact of some heavy object, and knew that the fighting must be fierce. Oh storms, she thought desperately, why are we being attacked? It's just a library. We're harmless. Unless this has something to do with - "Aln." Pel's transmission cut off her thoughts. "Focus on the present. You recognize these creatures. What can you tell the others about them?" Right. Right. Sorting through her confused memories with some difficulty, she finally seized on the information she needed. "Don't let the saliva of the Barghests touch you," she called, hoping that she could be heard over whatever noises were being made. "It's a type of sedative. And... it lives in the dark, so its eyesight is lacking." That last point gave her an idea, and she carefully opened the drawer beside her to begin rooting through it. Eventually, her hands found what she was looking for - a flashlight. Hopefully shining that in a creature's eyes would buy her a moment to run. For now, though, she simply held it defensively before her and began to wrack her brain for information on the Executors. @kenod @AmazingGoob @Negative_Null @turtle

Aln started reaching for a pen, in response to Everest's advice, when suddenly a hundred things happened at once. The door smashed to the floor, and dark fog began to gather outside. She inhaled enough Stormlight to enhance her speed and reflexes, then dove to the floor behind her desk. A quick glance gave her a better look at the invaders, and she was surprised to realize that she recognized what they were. Bhargests could often be found hunting underneath the city. They weren't amazingly dangerous on their own, but this looked like a whole pack. Executors were more rare. As the others prepared to fight, she frantically began to wrack her brain for information, trying to sort through her two sets of memories.

Aln shook her head. "I'm not remembering a single event, or even a single day. I'm remembering an entire alternate life. The Alleyverse is different too. It's..." she trailed off. A memory fell into place, suddenly, and her eyes widened. "There was a guild," she said slowly, "called the Dark Alley. It was a guild of hemalurgists, incredibly powerful ones." She grabbed a newspaper from a nearby table and scanned it quickly. There. "The old legend about the creation of the Alleyverse - in my memories, it was true."

"Do you happen to remember any specifics of your creation?" Aln asked Python. Before the rope could respond, however, Everest stepped into view. ""Aln, what happened? I know you want to study it, but I want to help." Aln hesitated. It was one thing to tell yourself that you're not crazy, and quite another to admit to your subordinates that you're having hallucinations. "It's...not a big deal," she said, glancing away. "A lie?" Aln stiffened at Pel's question, then exhaled softly. Truthwatcher. What does that mean? She looked back at Everest. "I've started remembering things that never happened."

No, you're right - one place at a time. I simply didn't see that you were in a tavern thread.

Aln frowned at it. "You're a type IV BioChromatic Entity, correct?" she asked, avoiding the question. "An object granted sentience using Investiture from Nalthis?"

Agreed - but it's also rather busy at the moment. When Sorana gets back from her vacation, you could try her boardinghouse, or you could just post in the General Alleycity thread and see if anyone wants a conversation. @A Windrunner

Aln followed behind Everest silently, trying to process the continuous onslaught of thought. She had managed to take control of her panic, but that hadn't stopped the feeling that everything. Every few seconds, some new memory came into her head: a day spent in a city she'd never visited; a conversation with a person she'd never met; the words of a book she'd never read. Oddest of all, it didn't feel as if she was receiving new information. Instead, it was as if the memories had always been there - and now she was simply calling them to mind. I have to assume I'm not crazy, she told Pel as they neared the guild. I could worry about my sanity indefinitely, but if something else is happening here, I may need to act. "Do you have a theory?" he responded. Not yet. If I figure out what exactly I'm remembering, perhaps it'll be a clue to the origins. It's like an alternate universe; I can remember multiple versions of the same event. My 23rd birthday, for example. I can remember that surprise party Trent threw, exactly as happened - but I also remember eating dinner alone in the dining car of a train in Elendel. "So what are you going to do?" Well, that's the question. She paused. I think I'll try writing it down. Maybe this'll make more sense on paper. She suddenly realized that she stood in the library, a conversation drifting around her. A male UrDai now conversed with Everest and the cloaked rope - whom she could only assume was a BioChromatic Entity. "Excuse me," she said, breaking in. "I would stay and chat with you, but I have a rather urgent matter that needs to be studied. Apologies for any commotion that I've caused." And she began to move towards her desk. @kenod @turtle @Kings_way @Negative_Null

Aln looked between them, trying to manage her breathing. It had been years since a panic attack this intense, but she still remembered how to steady her breathing and focus her thoughts. Finally, she felt that she could think through the fear still thundering in her chest. Pel, she thought, am I crazy? She could feel his uncertainty for a moment before his reply. "I - I don't think so." His confidence strengthened as he continued, "No. No, I would have noticed any signs of insanity. I think this is something else." That worry alleviated somewhat, she turned her attention to the figures in front of her, whose words still hung in the air. Under the cloak was...a rope? That's a new one. It had seemed confused at her reaction. Most likely its telepathic had no connection to whatever was happening to her memory. She pulled herself unsteadily to her feet. "I have experienced a panic attack," she said with some difficulty, reverting to her stiffest mannerisms, "triggered by..." she hesitated for a moment. "Triggered by a mental anomaly. I believe that this requires some investigation." @kenod

Aln leaned against the wall, trying to control her breathing, mind racing. What was going on? Why did she have such vivid memories of a sister who'd been gone for a decade? Suddenly, a voice intruded on her thoughts, echoing in her mind in a way that only Pel's had ever done. "Are you okay?" Aln spun faster than she knew she could, pressing her back to the building behind. In her confused mental state, all that she could make out was a cloak, undulating strangely, and Everest, both facing her. She didn't register Everest's words, just staring between them in a panic as more memories flooded her mind. She felt the ghost of a distant pain, and for a moment the figures before her morphed into a looming mound of squirming insects, burning eyes staring down at her. She felt a pressing need to get away, to be alone, to have time to process what was happening in her mind - but Everest and the cloak were blocking her exit. Instead, she forced out a sentence, directing it at the creature who had intruded into her thoughts. "What did you do?" @turtle @kenod

Aln nodded. "Reasonable, though rather indecisive. I guess just a general tour is in order." She turned down a side street. "This is the fastest way to the city center. If you're looking for a place to eat, there's a Rosharan restaurant that I'm fond of..." she trailed off, staring at the buildling in front of her. It was not a Rosharan restaurant. What? The sense of wrongness from earlier began to rise again as she looked around. This was the right place, surely. She remembered coming here with... Temeria? No, that couldn't be. She hadn't seen her sister in 10 years. As far as Aln knew, she was dead. But Aln could remember meeting her in the Alleyverse. She had carried a sword. Aln stumbled, steadying herself against a wall, head swimming. This isn't right. Why isn't any of this right? "Aln?" Her spren sounded frightened. "What's going on?" But Aln had no answer to give him. @kenod

Marie regretted her irritation a bit as the figure cringed and started to apologize. Aln wouldn't be pleased if she chased away a potential Guild member. "Look, um, it's fine. You didn't do anything wrong. This is the place to be if you want to learn about magic." She gestured vaguely to the library behind her. "The Guildleader is out at the moment, but you can read the books if you want. I think."

Great. Some strange off-worlder, probably encountering a Guild for the first time. Marie resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "Well, this is the Scholar's Guild. It's not a person, it's an organization. What do you need?"

Marie was reading in the library when she heard the knock at the door. Looking up, she realized that she was the only one in the building. Groaning, she hauled herself to her feet and pulled open the door. "Yes?"

Aln walked through the familiar streets of the Alleyverse, allowing the chill of the gently windy morning to push aside any lingering grogginess. Remnants of the previous day's festivities could be seen scattered on street corners, from decorations to abandoned masks. At her side followed Everest. "What sort of places are you in the mood to see?" asked Aln. "I spend most of my time in the quiet corners of the city, but I'm still familiar with the major landmarks." @turtle
-
Aln didn't smile back, instead looking away on the pretext of checking on the atium. She felt oddly reluctant to leave the building. Why was that? She should be excited to show someone the city she loved - or at the very least, satisfied to be helping someone learn. She frowned, and reached for a pocket. An empty pocket. Aln put a hand on her desk, feeling disoriented. You're probably just still tired, she told herself. It's almost certainly nothing. Still, a faint feeling of unease lingered as she forced her face into a friendlier expression and led the way out the door.

Aln nodded, memories of her first month in the Alleyverse returning to her. Without Torenat, she suspected that she would have been completely overwhelmed. "Well," she said, "I've lived here for years. I'd be willing to show you my favorite places."
