    "But..." Nico fumbled with his words. "I... I should be able to solve this me-self. I got me into it, I should get me out."

    "She will. You.... you's can't protect me from her. She's insane, she is, an' she gets out o' everythin'. L-last time I screwed up so bad, she got a whip from the dungeons an'-" He trailed off, scars on his back stinging slightly.

    Nico gulped. "Aww, stars, what am I doin'? She'll hurt me bad for tellin' y'all, she will."

    He sniffed, wiping his nose. "What are ya gonna do?"

    She smiled, letting out a sharp breath. "Yes. I'm glad you enjoy talking to a woman who last night you might have murdered... You seem to have gotten over that rather quickly." Riva stared him down. "Who are you, Caden? Under the grandeur and growls and gore, who are you, really?"

    "Mmm, no. I'm just glad I can talk to someone. And that you're not still angry with me. And that you're willing to share a room." She yawned, stretching. "You might actually be a good man, Caden Praetorium."

    "Oh, I've no idea. I simply find your attitude amusing after you kept calling me a witch last night."

    She cackled giddily. "Oh, Caden, don't deny it, you're terribly in love with me. I know, I know I'm hard to resist."

    She clasped her hands together dramatically. "Oh, Riva! You bring warmth to my hearth, heart, and home. Surely you in all your captivating wonder couldn't be evil at all!" Riva battered her eye lashes. "I love you forever, my darling! You're the best thing that ever happened to me and I will treasure your heart until the day I die!"

    She smiled and blushed. "Stars, last night I was worried you were about to kill me and now here we are gushing over each other like two young lovers..."

    Riva smirked. "Why? Do I captivate you, Caden, dearest?"

    "Good. As long as you understand that." She sighed, leaning back into the pillows. "Everyone sees the Raveness and the Raven has her patients to play with. But Riva had no one. At least, she didn't. Until now. So... thank you. For being willing to talk with me and tolerate my presence."

    "Can it not be both?" She eyed him carefully. "I am not some... some squishy and warm princess."

    "I am still the torturess," she said, glaring. "Do not forget that. I enjoy the screams I get, and have since I first came into my position as a child."

    Riva was silent for a long moment. She looked up at Caden and said, "I don't know." But, as she looked into his golden eyes, she felt compelled to add, "What do you think?"

    "Well, yes. But no one sees me as Riva. If I recall correctly, after all, last night you resorted to simply calling me 'woman.'" She stared at him flatly. "May I assume you've come to change your thinking?"

    “Oh. I could hardly decorate there… it’s supposed to be terrifying, I can’t very well do a cross stitch for the torturing cells.” Riva wandered over and sat down on the bed. “I didn’t intend to bring it for you, I intended it for myself. But…. I like you, Caden. You’re brave and daring. Courageous enough to handle me, after all. That I can greatly respect. So I’m glad I’ve brought you warmth. In all honesty I didn’t think I was capable of it. Because…. Everyone knows the Raveness is evil. And evil isn’t warm.”

    Warmth blossomed in Rivas chest. “Was what my intention?”

    Riva raised a well-manicured eyebrow. "What, are you saying I bring warmth to your life and household or some such gooey nonsense?" Because I dearly hope you are.

    She shrugged and bit her lip, slightly disappointed she hadn't gotten more of a response. "Well, yes. Daku... bought new... furniture."

    Riva glared at him, stomping her foot. For a moment, a growl built up in her throat and she opened her mouth to assail him, but then... She let out a harsh sigh. He was being honest; she should do the same. Her posture crumpled and she looked away. "I don't want to be alone anymore. I'm not very good at being with others. But... For as much as I hated being forced to marry you, I prefer this over the cold and dark. Maybe Ivian was onto something after all."

    She seethed, visibly annoyed that the general seemed to pay more attention to the art than his wife. "Well, why not?" I don't want to be alone and I. Want. That. Bed. I am not going back to the cold and dark.

    “Caden…..” she sighed. “Look, can we just…. We’re not always going to be alright with each other. So… this can be…” Riva played with her hands, unable to explain why she thought this was important. “I just want this…. I don’t want our marriage to…”
