    The mysterious violet Narrator disappeared, insulted. Meanwhile, AJ's eyes widened the light in them returning. He stared at Ember, trembling, but before he could fall to his knees with the strength of emotion and guilt that he felt, Ember touched his forehead, entering his mind and sending a shiver of peace through his mind. AJ gasped. "Thought..." he muttered. "No," Ember said. "But I will bring her back to you."

    She shook her head, smiling to herself. "I will do whatever I like. But you may believe that."

    "I am Ember's master. And Star's. I do not interact with the story directly. But I always keep my promises."

    Ember looked at Tom. Time was paused on the man's side. She had other things to do and he could wait for her to get back. Acknowledging that she was safe from the Shadow, she ran to the blonde man from her vision, the one with darkened eyes. Even as he brought out his gun to intercept her, she put her hand on his chest, entering his mind and freeing him. You are AJ, she told him. And you belong to someone. She poured feeling into him, making him remember. A whisper of a time forgotten. A rush of Shardic power and the lips of a purple-eyed goddess. Someone who loved him. We need your help, Nightshot.

    "That depends. You can sit here, or you can help Ember collect what she needs. I'm trusting you not to betray us. Great things are in store for you if you are loyal."

    "You've provided the inconsistency that we need. You'll know when this is all over what I mean by that." Ghostly fingertips reached out, wiping the tears from Shadow's cheeks. "All I ask, my dear, is that you calm yourself for a moment."

    The unnamed Narrator's presence circled the killer. "She was about to help you, you know. But you stabbed her in the back." A ghostly image of Star's pallid corpse appeared at Shadow's feet. "You alone are proof that she did exist in this universe. You've helped us so much already and you don't even realize it."

    "Let me ask you a question. Are you afraid of Star?"

    "You know I'll come to power again. And when I do, I'll have the chance to make you a marionette once more. But if you behave yourself... Well, who knows."

    But what was TLT without the characters? Nothing. "How would you like to be a character again, Shadow?" Ember's head turned toward the killer. "I could do it to you again, make you powerless." Even as the violet Narrator spoke, the charaters' bones reformed into the creatures they once were, unaffected by Shadow's mass killings.

    It was the fire of love and their passion was so considerable that it deserved such a metaphor.

    But when they were reborn in a few seconds, nothing had changed at all. "If you want to kill, Shadow, then do it elsewhere."

    Ember stared at him with Shin-like, amber colored eyes. "You were great once. And I need you. I offer my protection in return for your services."

    Ember also had Shard-like telepathic capabilities and was able to fix the tears, rips, cracks, and rents in his mind. Because she was in his mind, he was protected from Ark.

    But he was still a brilliant inventor and that was all Ember needed. "Your name is Tom," Ember said.
