YKYASW you hear a children's song about someone wanting to adopt a puppy and laugh your head off because it's Syl talking to the Stormfather about Kaladin. -

Ember closed her large, glassy eyes and leaned her head back against the wall. She quickly got up, however, when she realized that she was starting to heat up the concrete. Her feet were made of iron (and kept cold by extra Narrative Energy, supplied by her Core) to prevent this, but she hadn’t even thought about the rest of her body. Ember shuddered, regrowing her armor and standing in the small closet. Now that she was covered, it was so dark that she couldn’t see anything. It was unnerving - darkness, like music, was something she’d never experienced before. What else had she never experienced? What else would she never be able to experience because of her very nature? Ember hung her head, ashamed. She had been created for one thing - to save Star. She had succeeded once, but now she seemed a waste of words. She had one simple directive. Her constant failure haunted her. What if she never saw her master again? What if Silence killed her? Would Ember just… stop existing? Would TVG be angry with her for not fulfilling her purpose? She supposed thinking about such possibility was an inefficient use of time. She should focus on what she was doing right, to balance her negativity. She had tried to help her master. That was a start, right? And she had begun learning about the people Star considered important. Well… kind of. She had talked with Tamika, one of her master’s characters. She had been able to successfully help Tom. And Heather… She wasn’t sure what to think about Heather. Considering that she had been belligerent to the girl in the past, she felt good about the fact that Heather was willing to speak with her. But she had asked her to leave. And she had seemed afraid of her. Ember didn’t want people to be afraid of her. She wanted… Well, she wanted Star to be here. Without her master’s direction, what was she? She realized how odd that sounded. Before a few pages ago, she had considered Star… irrelevant and small. She realized now, though, why she was TVG’s chosen. Fiercely protective, strong, kind. Beautiful too, she supposed. So the question remained; what should she do now? Standing here was not getting her anywhere. She didn't think the Toms would need her help and she wasn't that interested in talking to anyone. But she did feel worried about Heather and Star. Star couldn't be helped right now. And Heather didn't want her around. Ember found that she very much disliked being useless. Almost as much as she disliked being in the dark. Almost as much as she disliked being alone. Almost as much as she disliked herself. -
From the album: Queen of Shadows
Okay, let's be honest, the other two drawings I did of Astral sucked. But this one is actually halfway decent. I'm really excited to be bringing my old girl back in CBST. She was fun to write and I was disappointed we didn't get to see more of her. But now we will! -

Ember found a storage closet and walked inside. It was small, there was nothing in it, and the floor was made of concrete, but she didn't particularly care. After she closed the door, she was surprised to find that her outer layer glowed in the darkness. She sat down, looking at her arms in awe. She was still finding out new things about herself. She had existed for, what, 70 pages now? In many ways, still a child. Did she really think she could try to make friends with someone? Someone she had hurt? And after failing over and over again... She sighed, finding herself feeling scared about what would happen when she left the closet. Who would she fail, who would she hurt, if she ever stepped outside? -

Ember froze when she heard Heather singing. She liked it; she'd never heard music before. For a moment, she considered going back in, but decided against it. She did, however, touch Heather's mind again. Your voice is lovely. She felt bad afterward. She probably shouldn't have intruded. Sighing, she kept walking, searching for an empty room. -

Ember looked at her feet, disappointed She did not want to be alone again. No one else would talk to her. "All right. If that is what you wish." She stalked out of the room, contemplative and... sad. It seemed she did feel emotion after all. -

Against her better judgement, Ember touched Heather's mind with her own. Though she may have been more powerful than Thought, she was not near as subtle. "You are feeling guilt," Ember said. "You think it was... your fault that I did not succeed." -

Ember grimaced. "I am sorry..." she said uncertainly. "I am sorry." She began regrowing her armor and started toward Heather, concerned. "I am sorry." -

Ember took Heather's hand. A symbol was seared into her palm, the blood from her wound entering Ember. What happened next was... confusing. Ember grabbed Heather's mind and quickly took the information she needed. From there, she was able to find Silence's Realm mentally. It was shielded from Narrators, but Ember was special, and with her immense, destructive power, she stabbed through the barrier. The puncture wouldn't last long, as the very nature of the Realm she was intruding upon was detrimental to Narrative Energy, so she began searching for Star's mental signature, using Heather's blood which had, by now, entered Ember's head. She searched with the speed of a supercomputer, but the hole was closing up quickly. She knew that if she stayed too long, she could be seriously damaged and she began to panic as she realized that Star was not here. And neither was Silence. She pulled out of Heather's mind and released her hand, panting. The whole thing had taken mere seconds. -
